Close racing in the mostly single file follow the leader affair, more like a F! race than a sprintcar race? Luckily, there was a sprintcar race held over the weekend that saw Tim Kaeding come from 14th to win in a feature that had 8 former Outlaw winners in it, actual racing, gotta love the mid-West.....
|
Glad to see this thread...I was thinking just last night that there hasn't been much Posse vs WoO banter on here lately. I enjoy the back and forth so long as it's civil and not disrespectful.
As far as track conditions and fan attendance...weather had much to do with it obviously...4 straight days of rain. So that comment is truely unfair.
8 former Outlaw winners at the NSL race.. impressive. And the winners of those 8 races from all over the globe (7 different states and 2 continents, US and Australia). Wait..there were 8 drivers at the National Open who also have Outlaw wins. And all eight are current or very recent Williams Grove regulars living within 40 miles of the track ( S.Smith, Deitrich, Hodnett, Esh, DeWease, Wolfe, R. Smith, and Cody Darrah). Ok, so Stevie shares time between Hanover and Oklahoma, but you get the picture. True LOCALS vs Outlaws.

Just saying one track had some racing, the other track was Formula 1 stuff with little passing.
As to your 8 regulars, 4 of them ran regularly with the Outlaws and only one of them had any real success while out on the road, that being Stevie. The guys in Nebraska have won lots of Outlaw races all over the country, not just a few fluky Grove/PA wins.
The racing was lousy, 6 Heats, the Dash, A B and C Mains all won from the front row, if one was to check it had the least amount of passing for any Open ever I'll bet and the same holds with any other Outlaw race this year. It was Great to see Stevie win I've been a fan for a long time but you can't convince me the racing was anything but subpar all night long, sorry!

I already stated I'm a realist....of course the WoO drivers have dominated the Knoxville Nationals also. The Nationals have, however, been won many times by drivers who were Knoxville regulars at one time. Posse drivers of course have won their biggest event also. Unlike Posse regulars, the top Knoxville drivers still tend to travel more and several current regulars have run pretty regularly with the WoO. Knoxville regulars have not only won WoO events at Knoxville, but also many tracks accross the country. More Posse drivers travelled in the past than they currently do. The bottom line is this....the WoO have dominated the statistics everywhere they have run. That alone does not diminish the quality of racing in PA, the Midwest or anywhere else. It's just stating a fact that night in and night out, the WoO drivers and teams are the best. Hope you enjoyed your popcorn....
|
They travel because there are 400 miles between their "regular" Tracks...and God forbid another track inside of 400 miles schedules against Kville (Husets scrape?)!
Stevei Smother stopped the car on the backstretch and climbed the car and yelled "I'm POSSE!" on his way to victory lane last night....been awhile since I saw TMac (who much like Smith, went on the road with the Outlaws and now NSL) do that at Kville...help me out on the date...slips my mind right now.

1970s lap times makes anything that happened of little value and Fred has the balls to commend the track for a great effort.
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

I saw the entire race on PPV....I'm not arm chair racing. Just saying that take the win graciously, but for heavens sake it shouldn't lead to bragging like it's a regular lop sided occurance. Two WoO drivers in the history of the Open each have 5 wins. The WoO have more than doubled the Posse in wins at the Grove when they go head to head. To put it in perspective, it would be like a Minnesota Twins fan bragging to a Yankees fan that the Twins have won two World Series. And don't overlook my comment that I am happy for Stevie. He's been overlooked by car owners for too long. Fred Rahmer knows what it takes to be a winning driver. Hats off to Fred for putting Stevie in that car!
|
You're missing the whole point. WOO are full time professionals, Posse is local yokels, many of whom have full time jobs... of course they're the underdogs, & thats why people cheer for them & brag when they win.
& this year they have a LOT to brag about....
Its like Mom & Pop stores vs. Walmart

It was great to see Smith back in victory lane at the grove seeing it only took him another 20 years or so to get there!
considering :
he started up front
races there every week/shiw!!!!!
his car ownre/ crew chief has 100 wins there knows how to set the car up there
seems to me if he didn't Win it he would of looked like an idiot!! With those kind of stats
look at that start up line up you would of thought the podium would of been posse podium 123
nothink against Stevie he's a fantastic driver!!! at the Grove and deserves a win there after 20 years Hats and BELTS off to him he def deserves last nights W
if you were to put Stevie in the 7 car where do you think he would of finished?????

Nice post.......the truth hurts

I agree with you about the recent weather and the track conditions. I thought the track actually held up quite well considering that it had been drenched. You did fail to mention, though, that of the 8 drivers that were at the NSL race this past weekend that have won WoO Features, (even though only McCarl is from Iowa) just how many of them are or were recently Knoxville regulars. I'm quite sure that in the past 40 years or so, that the drivers that have been Knoxville regulars have achieved far more coast to coast than any of the Posse regulars have.

In the past 25 years, a grand total of one driver who was ever a Knoxville regular has won the Nationals. Jesus, I can see how tired the loclas must get of watching all locals win year after year in the track's biggest race.
Strange thread. The Outlaws get completely hammered on Sunday nightand thread turns into "But, but, but, Knoxvulle...."

The only place in the country where it means so dang much for a local to win is Posseville, the rest of the country merely want to see a good race, a Posse Cheerleader just wants a win, race be damned....I have no issue with Mr. Smith winning I merely think that the whole night was lousy racing for the most part but that never really matters when a local boy who left 20 years ago gets a win, lol.....Actually I was also happy to see Freddy get the win as a car owner, can't think of anyone who deserves it more and while I won't be around to see it but it will be pretty special when one of the kids does the same thing, WOW....

It is strange, considering the first person to bring up Knoxville was one of the higher profile Posse drum beaters on here.

Change the Open into a three or four day points race and we'll see who rises to the top. It may have paid big for the win Sunday night......but face it ....the Williams Grove National Open is nothing more than a one night WoO show. It's a wanna be race....wanna be as important as the Knoxville Nationals....well sorry, it isn't. Just like at Williams grove, locals around the country win WoO Features from time to time just like the Posse does. The difference is, the rest of the country's fans handle the situation the same, win or lose. The Posse fans crow when they get a win....and are not to be found when they don't.

Going to have to check the records on the exact number however; I am 100% certain that the 51s did not run the weekly show at the Grove. I don't think they ran even monthly anywhere....

He didn't run weekly. The last race he won at the Grove before the National Open was something like five wins in eleven starts for the year at WG.
Soooo, was I wrong in my earlier post? I'm genuinely curious.

In victory lane Rahmer and Schatz both make it pretty clear that they think Stevie should have won last year also.

Stevie didn't win it last year. David Gravel won last year. He got by Smith Jr. late in the race for the win last year. Smith faded at the end of last year's race after getting very loose getting in to turn 1. Gravel was driving a California based car. Not midwest, not Knoxville, Not Posse. California is on the West coast. Amazing what some people forget after just 1 year.

I always find it funny when the goobers treat 6k or prelim races like they are the Knoxville Nats. But last night was 50k, despite the awful conditions for time trailing, the cream rose. Stevie and Schatz were clearly the best in the field and Stevie was better. Quite an accomplishment. Interesting stat, in the last 10 crown jewel races, 8 have been won by current WoO regulars (you know the ones that are supposed to suck). That Rahmer-affiliated team is the only team in the country to beat them. Quite an accomplishment.

Should have = didn't.
If anyone says Schatz should have won it this year you would be losing your mind.

Just the messenger brother, neither Rahmer or Schatz give much credit to Gravel in victory lane this year, and rightfully so. Rahmer says this should have been 3 in a row for his team. Schatz says Stevie should have won it last year...http://youtu.be/bAhkzWIYdbE
