Was TNN losing money on all of those live races they used to do?

Or ESPN back in the 1980s & 90s?

It is obvious that ESPN was not making money on those races. Otherwise, they would still be on TV. ESPN is big busniess. They only do things that make money.

Wrong, ESPN would've yanked those broadcasts in less than a couple of months if they weren't making money. They made money. What they didnt make was a shit ton of money and that's all the corporate sleeze bags in television care about these days. If they make a quality show and turn a modest profit, that's ok. If they make trash tv that appeals to nitwit audience that rakes in HUGE profits, that's their goal. ESPN would show fart sucking contests if there were big profits in it. They really don't give a crap about our niche sport UNLESS there is a way to exploit it for grotesque profits.
Cheers!

Live production costs have increased dramatically since the days of TNN.

I bet the overall cost of just people and production equipment has quadrupled since 1990 when they did tape delayed events on TNN via Diamond P Productions. and is still probably triple of what it cost in the late 1990's to do live TV on TNN.

You've also got to figure in the other costs, like gasoline and Diesel. The Lucas Oil Productions Truck in Knoxville a couple years ago came from California (1800 miles each way) and Diesel was around $4 per gallon that year (roughly $1 a mile in FUEL to move a truck up and down the road, plus whatever it costs in maintenance per mile). National Average Diesel Price in August of 1999 was $1.14 per gallon. That's 75% difference. You can't produce Live TV without a Production Truck.

What do Supercross, Monster Trucks, etc. have in common? They are owned by the same parent organization, so they can use the same production equipment at various events and reduce their costs by scheduling a Monster Truck show the week before or week after a Supercross Event in each city.

What else do they have in common? They have sponsors that are willing to pay for TV (MONSTER ENERGY DRINK for Example). Sprint Cars haven't had that since the Pennzoil days.

Shame on them for making money

I can not believe they would do that

We should all work for less and help out TV so you could stay home and watch racing free

Why not make a reality show for the off season with the Outlaws similar to Dirt Knights? That would be fun to watch.

3 Wide Life has beenairing a number of Sprint and Silver Crown races on TUFF TV.

In the last 2 weeks, I've seen Knoxville winged cars, an Oskaloosa 410 non-winged race, and Silver Crown's Hoosier 100.

Your mention of the internet channel Tuff TV brings up another point that I don't think anyone has made. Back when TNN broadcast American Sports Cavalcade and ESPN had their Thunder series they were the only act around and most people got their feed via cable TV. Today there's competition from Satellite services and a variety of sports channels as well as internet TV like the channel you mentioned. I think another factor is that the available sponsor dollar has been split so many ways that a niche sport like dirt track racing struggles to find a good venue to present itself.

Back when ESPN and TNN were airing live racing the internet hadn't yet taken off with the masses. A person could pickup a copy of NSSN or Open Wheel the big magazine of the day and the companies running product ads didn't even have websites. That would be unheard of today but 15 years ago when those of us who even bothered to go online were plugging along with 14.4 dial up modems nobody paid much attention to the internet until a few years later when it really got going. It's only been during the past few years that bandwidth got to the point where streaming live races even made sense.

Open wheel racing enjoyed some great TV in the 80's and 90's and a few years where NASCAR types and large companies were throwing advertising dollars at just about anything they could. A combination of the recession and lack of big sponsors, the aforementioned production cost increases, evolving types of media and saturation of broadcasting methods brings us to where we are today. I think the future of televised Sprint Car racing will be big events like the Nationals and Prelude on cable/satellite channels along with more online broadcasts that are just now coming into their own. A parts manufacturer can't afford to foot production costs for a full blown television crew but it's getting where a couple guys with cameras and a fast internet connection can rival anything ESPN or TNN could do twenty years ago. That is attractive to the people involved in the racing industry who can't afford to support full blown TV.

The New ASCS Show now on RacinBoys TV. Feedback would be helpful.

Note: Bryan and I do this show on the road with one camera. As you can tell it's done pretty cheap, but it's better then nothing. We hope you enjoy it.

New ASCS Show with interviews plus A Main highlights at end of show.
