With respect to the Vukovich family, you need to start with grandpa Bill, son Billy, and grandson Bill.

How about Johnny Parsons and Johnny Parsons, Jr., and Don Vogler and Rich Vogler

Also Gordon and Don Hamilton of the San Diego area. Gordon drove modified sportsmen for years and started Don in the sport at an early age. Don eventually went to sprint cars and drove for Alex Morales when they had the four-cam Ford engine in the Tamale Wagon. I believe he was the CRA champion one year

Wasn't the 4 cam Tamale wagon a Moser Chevy engine?

Owned now by Buzz Shoemaker?

Since this is the CRA forum how about Walt and Lee James?

Cheers from the UK!

Since you asked, less known racing heroes like Tiny Bladder and his boy Buster come to mind. The story goes that Tiny couldn’t compete in his beloved short track racing because of frequent needs to stop and relieve himself during the race. Tiny and Buster put their heads together and came up with the first racing Pilot Irrigation System (PIS). At last, Tiny could finish a thirty lap feature in comfort! Things went fine for a while, but took a turn for the worse when Tiny’s racing skills improved and he began to run at the front of the pack. After the races, angry, urine drenched drivers took to beating up Tiny and Buster in the pits with hand tools, spelling the end to any further development of PIS. A shame. Today PIS would go a long way toward eliminating safety hazards caused by desperate freeway drivers leaving the wheel unattended in order to pinch it off, or taking a whiz in empty beer cans and other unapproved containers at highway speeds, or hunkering behind an open car door to relieve themselves just inches from hurtling semis.

Everything you know is wrong.

Did you forget the again part Rob?

I remember Tiny.. Wee alway's used to wonder why he qualified so well, had decent heat finishes, but would always fade at the end of the main. That went on for years until he started running up front, then he was getting his a** kicked for the effort. Wee couldn't figure out why everyone was so pissed off at him.

Thanks for the post Wallbanger, it explained a lot of things I've wondered about for years.

The name "Vukovich" comes to mind. But then, so does the name "Bettenhausen."

Part II just went up - as a hint, we have our first three-generation family, and our first father/son combo who are both still racing.

Here's the link. I'm going to try and get through the rest on a daily basis - a nice long vacation to Lake Tahoe sort of distracted me!

Hogracer,

You could be right about the Tamale Wagon having a four cam Moser versus a Ford. My memory, not nearly as good at almost age 68 as it was years ago, also recalls that the Tamale Wagon at one time had a turbocharged engine in it when Hamilton was driving for the Morales brothers. If I remember correctly, the turbocharger made things really interesting due to the fact that there was some lag time before it cut in. Guess that meant the driver had to anticipate his need for power by a little bit. Must have been pretty tricky.

Oh those were the good old days. Now no more Ascot, Manzanita, and on and on.

Tell us more about yourself, fuelman. If you were a fuelman it sure doesn't mean short track racing. I was listening to the Indy 500 on radio when Vuki died. I never will forget it. He was very special. But he wouldn't be the one to have said that.

The only reason I chose that handle is because I put the fuel in the Argo#19 car.He wouldn"t be the one to say what? I remember listening to the Indy 500 when I was growing up.In '72 when I was aboard the USS Cascade AD-16 in Naples harbor I had to stay up late to listen to the race on the Armed Forces Network. That's just a little bit about myself.

The final installment is up. Please check out the last article, but I'll go ahead and run down the Top 10 here:

  1. Bob, Steve and Kraig Kinser
  2. Duane, Pancho and Dana Carter
  3. Tony Bettenhausen Sr., Tony Bettenhausen Jr. and Gary Bettenhausen
  4. Joe and Joey Saldana
  5. Howard, Brent, Bud and Tim Kaeding
  6. Johnnie and Johnny Parsons
  7. Bill Vukovich, Bill Vukovich Jr. and Billy Vukovich III
  8. Sammy and Kevin Swindell
  9. Steve and Stevie Smith
  10. Bubby and Tony Jones
What are your thoughts? You can make a real strong case for any of the top three to be No. 1. Looking back, I might reconsider flipping the Swindells and the Smiths, but that's a tough call. The two families who just missed out were the Yeleys (Cactus Jack and J.J.) and the Joneses (Parnelli, P.J. and Page).

Thanks for putting the Carter's at #2 but you forgot to mention Cole and Dane Carter.
