Heard Kevin Ramey showed up at KSP with the headers on the car "up side down"......and they let him run that way. Anyone confirm or have pics of this?

Not really upside down but definitely look odd...almost like midget headers.  The purpose is to decrease heat on the rear tires...shoots the exhaust up and over the tires instead of on them.

OK...then that's a different story than what I was getting. I heard this was something created by the engine builder (ASI) and they were telling people it was 'worth power'.....LOL.

Ironically, keeping the heat off the tires/shocks/bars/jacobs ladder actually makes sense, but wouldn't it be easier to put a turn out on the collector???

Each zoomie pipe on of  a funny car creates 800lbs of downtown so if I had a car...

Hot air rises,so it's got to be of benefit. But on another note,if he does keep running that,he will most likely be deaf after a handful of races,I don't care how good a set of ear plugs he has lol. Also how is his left elbow gonna look after a few races as well lol

Not sure I can buy into the whole hot air rising thing, but hey....look how many people are using square tail tanks on midgets now, b/c that just HAD to be the secret to Sammy and Kevin's success at the Chili Bowl, right? LOL

BUt I do agree that Ramey's elbow would have to be "warm" after a few laps.....and definitely agree on the ear plug comment!

IMO, the design is good in theory, but practical application I am unsure.  The dissipation of heat from the headers will be a diffusion process, not collimated.  Therefore, the heat will still have an impact on the rear tires.  Additional concern would be for driver safety, short  and long term.  The heat will enter the cockpit, so will the fumes from combusted fuel.  This is not to exclude the noise factor and damage to hearing.

The above post is close to what I would say. Adding the strain of heat  to the valve springs. To explain I did this with a hand built aluminum hood which transfered heat much easier. Tires still got hot. Driver affects would be utmost concern. As far as the zoomie effect, hard to compare 7-8000 horsepower , blown power plants to a sprint car engine. One very famous driver/ builder showed up at Knoxville with two right side headers on the car years back. Over heard him tell many it tightened the car on entry where he had to develop odd lines. Truth was the rack and pinion steering had too quick of ratio and even he couldn't use it. Yes rack and pinion, mounted on axle. That was an interesting night to say the least.

When I worked in Experimental Flight Test, we used variations of these to monitor temperatures of various surfaces. They are held on with adhesive and can tell a hell of a story over a wide area. I would be interested to see the results of some placed on shocks, rear axle, wheels ect..... http://www.grainger.com/product/Non-Rev-Temp-Indicator-9UDG3?s_pp=false

well since each cylider on a funny car creates about 1250 HP vs around maybe 115 HP per cylinder on a 410 sprinter i don't know if the down force from a sprint motor would be that helpful.

besides the zoomies on sprinters was done over 30 years ago.

I think it was when Sammy had the channel lock car he had headers simalar to those except they angled up more and went to the back of the cage. Don't think he ran them long but I know he had them at Knoxville at least once.

Anyone have a pic of that? Hawker?
