Yo Blueteam, here's one for ya'.
In the mid 90's I was shooting at a W of O show at Jacksonville, FLA not a track for sprinters I might add. During the drivers meeting it was said that you were not supposed to go off the track in the turns and into the loose dirt or infield grass, it could result in a DQ. I was shooting in the first turn and very early on I noticed the cars were going lower and lower and I got a shot of Craig Dollansky ( I think, not sure, doesn't matter) with his left rear just toughing the infield grass. This was a little disconcerting because that is where I was shooting from, yikes. The very next lap I got a picture of Sammy passing Craig who was still on the grass, only Sammy was below him, I laughed and ran at the same time almost. Was a Sammy fan then and still am....

So you're saying nobody has ever bounced off the berm and destroyed someone else in the process?
|
Take your damn tires elsewhere. People are just saying a burm is prob safer than your tires. Is it that hard to figure out?

I like watching that left front up on the berm and the right rear digging in . Looks like they are twisting the chassis. Also gets another groove . While they are flying around the high side. The PAS is like that and it makes for good racing.
|
Exactly, some drivers figure it out and now you have 2-3 grooves

I don't like the tires. Put in an inside berm and/or a guard rail. The tires are too easy for the cars to catch and consequently crash. Whenver I go to a track with tires on the inside line, I'm reminded by the old timer I go with of the Asphalt Nationals at Lakeside Speedway when Doug Wolfgang hit a tire on the inside and got burned up in his car. Safety first.

Simple. Explain in the drivers meeting where the race track is. Where you can and can't race. The flagman has a black flag, if needed use it.

It is apparent to me that many of you have never driven a sprint car or have been forced to deal with a torn up race car. Ignorance is bliss.
Tire barriers are dangerous! Period! When tire related accidents don't result in injury or death, they still tear up a ton of expensive equipment.
The possibility of losing a car, a track supporter if you will, should be enough to motivate a promoter to reconsider the use of tires, but when you add in the possibility of injury, it's a no brainer. I'm surprised and disappointed that more race tracks haven't looked for a safer alternative.
I thought race tracks and sanctioning bodies were trying to figure out how to attract more cars? How about get rid of the tire barriers for starters... This isn't rocket science!
The inside barrier (already pointed out earlier in this thread), needs to be continuous. Not only are tire barriers not continous, but they have a tendency to deflect the race car back on to the racing surface; more so than a continous-smooth barrer.
Call it a berm or a guard rail or a wall, just make it smooth and continous...

This thread is funny. People are upset about tires in the infield? They're there all night....DON'T HIT THEM! Should we remove all walls from race tracks too? I reckon they do more damage than a tire.
-
What about the open wheel tires on the other cars? Oh no, they too are tearing up equipment when drivers run over somebody! We better put full bodies on them and enclose everything! Some of you people just aren't happy unless you're bitching about something.

You sound more ridiculous! people just trying to improve safety. Tires are a joke they cost and cause too many unneeded incidents carnage etc.

While you are at it take down all stop signs cause I might want to cut across the corner to get home faster.
Being that they don't move or jump at you should try to avoid hitting them
Neat concept, right

Ridiculous analogy. Complete nonsense. Obviously a bench warmer. Let the big boys handle this one!

No, it's not. I understand what people are saying. Some say its safer without. Some say its cool to see the LF up on the berm. Some think the tire is at fault when the right side of the car is mangled, and I'm still trying to figure that one out. Now, is it that hard for you to understand what I'm saying? I'm all for anything that will keep infield drivers on the actual racing surface. Berms do not accomplish that. Tires keep that from happening when officials fail to do their job and fans cheer on the heroes who drive away from their carnage. But I'll succumb to your righteousness. I'm wrong. Always will be.
The greatest knowledge is to know that you know nothing
at all.

Excellent post Hannity, and spot on. Even a continuous line of tires might help over staggering them, but I would like to see the tires gone all together. I have seen it happen too many times where a guy clobbers one of those things and ends up in the middle of traffic. This is a safety issue, and one that needs to be addressed. Anyone who says "well just don't hit them" obviously does not understand the problem and should probably refrain from commenting.

Yeah OK, I'm ridiculous. If theres a wall around it, don't hit it. If theres a tire in the infield, don't hit it. If theres a car stopped on the track, dont hit it. If theres a push truck in the infield, dont hit it. If theres a tree line 100 yards from the race track, dont hit it. If theres haulers along the backstretch, dont hit it.
Pretty simple if you ask me. if you have trouble with running over things, maybe you should pick something else to try.
do it in the dirt

I do not agree with Meatbag very often but on this one Don't hit it if it does not move

It's NOT the fact that there are tires marking the inside of the track surface. It is the fact that they are NOT continous and you can get in between them to hit one. How effective would an inside wall be if it was in three foot sections thirty feet apart? Place them continously all the way around the track and fill them with dirt exactly like Spoon River in Canton, IL and problem solved! I bet nobody has "clipped" a tire during a race, only crashed into them all! LOL

The tires are terrible!! Plain and simple. I have paid for more then one axle in my day because of these stupid barriers!! Do you think the promotors care? Nope! It is cheap for them. Everyone has been asking for more safety improvements. Here you go! And it will not cost drivers or owners a dime!!

Meatbag & Vanh are ignoring one basic fact: people make mistakes, especially in sprint car races. Do you want the mistakes to be lethal or destroy several cars? Make it as safe as possible
Fortunately Tony's injury wasn't life threatening, but probably cost him a fortune in NASCAR money. Do we want to discourage big name NASCAR visitors like Smoke & Yung Money? I don't....
