Good Lord! It amazes the hell out of me that there are people who are so fast to discredit someone for trying something that is out of the norm. Had he run his car with a huge right rear wheel and 16 inches of stagger, a set of wings, and not formed an enclosed body people would cry even louder that he was not going in a circle. Had he done this in a winged car going in a circle on the flats so that he would have a large enough area to go 200 without risking hitting something solid we would hear about how it didn't happen at Knoxville! What is this argument about wheel size anyway? Do we discount speeds at a 1/4 mile track because they require 15 to 18 inches of stagger over the 10 to 12 inches they might run at Knoxvile? Why does wheel size matter? They would run right rears that rolled out at 135 inches if they thought that it would be faster at Knoxville.......... People need to get over themselves for petes sake. Damion Gardner did EXACTLY what he set out to do. He took a sprint car, fitted just enough to it to attempt to set a record in what is otherwise a traditional sprinter, and he took a run at 200 mph. Good for him, he took his shot and got close. He never said that he was shooting to knock track records down, or to proclaim himself the worlds greatest driver. He did however go faster than any other sprint car has gone. IN A REAL SPRINT CAR, not a salt flats car!..........I know a group that runs a car at the flats and believe me, that car that Damion drove was not a salt flats car. Congratulations Mr. Gardner and I hope you go faster next year.

"I am not so sure that I would want to go 194 mph in a car that I felt might be ready to spin out. That sounds a little nerve wracking to me".
A quote from Damion and again.. “He has noted extreme characteristics (including extreme lateral movement in the rear end) occurring at these speeds which are intriguing him." ...The tail of that beast is wagging, and he's intrigued.
Half the lies they tell about me aren't true.

This is a quote from my buddy who runs on the salt and was there competing this year: "The event is called Speed Week. Part way through everyone was calling it Spin Week. The salt was very dry and was referred to as marbles. The Strausburg lakester spun at 346 mph."....I guess that they were ALL a little nuts this year. They are doing this again in about three weeks. It will be round 2 of 3. I don't know if Damion will try this again this year, but there are a couple more opportunities to do so.

How fast do you thing a traditional sprinter (wing and nonwing) could go in a straightline with current legal body work and stagger, basically how fast do you think Damion's #4 CRA car could go with a gear change and how fast would Shatz car go. I would think the non-wing car would be considerably quicker (less drag) but you never know.
By the way, how fast did the winged sprint cars average on the one mile tracks

If i recall at Sacramento a few years back during a Silver Crown race they
had a invitational sprint car race.. I think the top time during tt's was
around 145mph average.. I beleive Sammy may have been at little faster
than that at at Syracuse and Springfield.. Sac is a horse track with sandy
material.. I'm sure someone can recall or correct what i just posted.

Sprinter79 sayeth: " I am not so sure that I would want to go 194 mph in a car that I felt might be ready to spin out. That sounds a little nerve wracking to me. "
Agreed, but that wouldn't be nearly as scary to me as an actual sprint car race with 23 other cars out there. I doubt if I'd even have the balls to go full speed on an empty track (well, MAYBE if I worked up to it gradually)

Sorry but I have to agree.. It was not a sprintcar on dirt it was a purpose built car for salt flats to drive in a straight line for how many miles.. Great effort by the team to go fast in a straight line but sprintcars run on ovals on dirt.. Do that at 200 mile and you get credit. As far as I know Sammy and Murphy hold the quickest time in a sprintcar , and yes they were on mile ovals but they were still ovals.. I may be wrong but thats my opinion..

Ha, I hear you there. Maybe someday down the road you may have to come out and give it a try. ........The racing part of it is not my conern (although I completely see where it could be), it is the 194mph part that would have me nervous. Although Sprinters get up there on bigger tracks, my car is no where near those speeds. I am not sure that I would be involved if it was going that fast! (lol)

Good post. I used to have some video footage of them running sprinters up Pikes Peak. The Unser's did this several times. If you have a copy of Jack Fox's "The Mighty Midgets" there are also stories of Midgets racing on tracks that were not ovals back in the day.

Love those pictures and I have them logged away somewhere. I was just a kid in 59, but I knew because my father was a racer that Pikes Peak was the Unsers mountain and it stayed that way through Robbie.

I can completely understand that. There comes a point where it is fast enough for me! (lol)
