Through a meeting held between the city of Knoxville and the Iowa State Patrol/D.O.T. it has been learned that the state will be specifically targeting out of statecommercial vehicles in the coming weeks. Even if you are minding your P's & Q's, not speeding, etc, you are subject to being pulled over for an inspection. A commercial vehicle in this instance is described as a vehicle traveling over 100 miles one way with a gross vehicle weight over 10,001 pounds and going to an event to win something.
Here's a list of the items they will be looking for:
Drivers License (CDL) Medical card Log Book Tractor Registration Trailer Registration Annual Inspection Report Fire Extinguisher Triangles No Radar Detector Seat Belts No alcoholic beverages ANYWHERE in the vehicle, including the trailer. Even 1 beer in the trailer could result in the driver receiving a temporary license suspension (24 hours) and the rig being parked until a new driver can take over.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but these are the facts. Travel safe!

Travel under the cover of darkness fewer patrols at night and larger areas to cover.

You would think that law enforcement would want to "target" law breakers.

It wouldn't make sense, especially in this crappy economy, to support this event since it pumps mega dollars into the community and state.

This has been going on for many years, there is many other things that the LE should be looking at, drunks, underage drinking and the local drug trade.

yeah it does suck for the teams and that is a good way to lose the event, on the other hand the DOT has a job to do and it is the teams responsibility to follow all the rules of the road, maintain good equipment. if u can afford a huge hauler and trailer 500 in preventative maintenance is cheap.

Just when I was feeling bad about not going to the Nationals. Thank you Iowa. You make us feel so unwanted. I remember the year they had so many officers at the Nationals they were tripping over each other. Actually, it was amusing. So this veteran of 19 Nationals between 1972 and 2006 will be at The Grove, Port, Selinsgrove and The Dirt Track this year. And having an opportunity to feel welcomed in the process.

Better have a hands free device or the driver could be fined $2750.00 & the owner of the commercial vehicle up to $11,000 if caught. I see guys driving all the time without a hands free device. Best thing to do like what was said stay in compliance. They have different levels of inspection so hopefully most will get a driver only 1.

And just like any other time you deal with law enforcement, they will treat you based on how you treat them. Arguing with a cop and being a jerk never helps.

Just curious, why is it illegal to have alcohol in the trailer?

My assumption is that it has something to do with transporting across state lines/taxes/etc, but I might be way off base.

I can't come out this year due to some deep medical issues and I thought the Raceway and the police and the state boys had all this worked out,all I see is the Nationals being moved. How long would the fair board stand for that, not long, considering the amount of income the race generates, its about time they quit playing games with the competitors and the fans, the law I speaking about,go flash that badge to a real law breaker and believe me Iowa has plenty of those.

Well at least this year they had meetings and put out PR regarding making easy money....er...uh...I mean hassling....uh.."enforcing" traffic laws for trucks...no wait a minute, can you call it enforcing when you are specifically targeting out of state race rigs?..I think that would be considered "profiling" instead of enforcing...will we see hundreds of JB Hunt trucks or other freight companies being inspected without a moving violation? Doubtful.....insane...ridiculous...the funniest thing about it is how many people defended these actions over the last few years, accused the victims of exaggerating and blowing things out of porportion, called Doug Auld (I think) a liar for the comments in his column in SC&M last year about this topic, etc etc.
Loose is when you hit the wall with the rear of the
car, tight is when you hit the wall with the front of
the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and
torque is how far you move the wall.
