I am currently living in Sioux Falls, SD. Within the next few months I will be relocating to Santa Cruz, CA. One of the hardest things about leaving the area is leaving behind the race team that I have been working with. I know there is alot of sprint car racing in the area that I am moving to (Watsonville is minutes away) and I am hoping to be able to continue the hobby that I enjoy so much. Do any of you fellow hosers have any idea of some teams that maybe looking for some help? I am willing to work in the shop or go to the track, or both. Any suggestions? If so, shoot me an e-mail. Thanks in advance.

Hope you've been here before and you're in for a culture shock. Surf City USA! Best surfing in the continental US. Cold water tho. The politics are wild here. Lesbians and hippies galore.

I don't know of any team that needs help but I'm sure a few would appreciate it. Watsonville or Ocean Speedway is about 30 minutes from SC. Maybe you already know these things???

Good luck!

I left CA in 2008, right when the Ocean Sprints were just getting started. Watsonville 360's are the only full fields you will find in California. Golden State 410's never get a full field and usually only supply 3-5 competetive cars. IMO the best track in California is Tulare. Try and hit the Trophy Cup in October. Other than that have fun, the best part about California is the weather. No hurricanes, no tornadoes, just sun. It's a great place to live, unless you are a race fan...

Paydirt, it seems I recall back in S.D. when someone said "snort" you thought of a pig.

When they said "weed" you thought of those things sticking up out of the ground during the winter months.

In Santa Cruz "snort and weed" have a total different meaning! Smile

Also, not all the info provided by Dirthawk is correct when it comes to sprint car racing in Cali.

True, the GSC seems to have a problem fielding more than 18-19 cars but other series are doing just fine.

Enjoy your move and enjoy the racing in Cali.

...you will have a chance to see Calistoga. They will have the USAC cars in town over labor day weekend.Don't miss it if you like to see the non-wing's on a half mile. It's also 1 of the most beautiful setting's for a speedway.

..there's a lot of race teams out here, and a lot of different websites to go look for work.I'm sure somebody will need your help.Good luck.

weird is the word for that place! the only good thing about it (other than the beaches and the b!tches) is that it is a quick trip over the hill to get away from it. lol. nice people though, but definitely weird.

to indy and beyond!!

To be honest, the weirdness gets to be a bit much at times but I'm pretty much used to it. A lot of people come from all over the country and the world to live here. The Monterey Bay is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Check out the US Open golf tourney from Pebble Beach next week on TV.

Haha! Yah, take it easy on the neighbors eh! I did live in MN, apparently long enough for someone in Santa Cruz to ask me if I was from Canada. I said "No I'm not, hey". "I'm from South DakOOta".

I just moved from Oakland, CA last month after living there for 7 years. The sprint car racing in NorCal is outstanding. Yes, the GSC has short fields but the A main is always outstanding. Plus you get to see several Kaedings, Allard and future stars K. Larson, Z. Zimmerely and A. Geving.

Wing 360's are on the rise but also put on a decent show with the Civil War series & Ocean Taco Bravo series. You also have to check out the following:

  • Tulare - Trophy Cup & spring WoO shows (best wing racing on west coast!)
  • Ocean - any wing show
  • Calistoga - Usac Labor day show
  • Chico - Mini Gold Cup (WoO Gold Cup is great but extremely hot)
  • Placerville - any wing show
  • Perris - Bud Oval Nationals
  • Skagit - Dirt Cup

** regarding working for teams, just visit a few Ocean/Watsonville Taco Bravo 360 wing shows as someone will need help. They usually draw 30 cars.

The racing out here has been outstanding in the Golden State Challenge series don't make up your mind based on someone who doesn't even reside out here anymore. California has created some of the finest sprint car drivers to ever strap in and we are still pumping out the talent. The youth coming up out here are fantastic. You will enjoy yourself, if that is you like mostly bullring racing! :-)

Who wouldn't want to watch Jon Allard, Tim Kaeding, Bud Kaeding, Brent Kaeding, Kyle Larson, Zach Zimmerly, Tommy Tarlton, Peter Murphy and a host of others battle it out? The Trophy Cup is outstanding and lets not forget the great non wing racing happening in central and southern CA. Ventura gets awesome car counts (37 last weekend) for their weekly racing series (VRA) and the racing is really good.

I will have to introduce myself at one of the races coming up assuming you'll be out here soon.

what is your background in racing? what team have you worked?

maybe if you gave a little bit of your history in racing someone might be interested when you get out here. The coastal area is a beautiful place to live and expensive too

Thanks for all the input guys/gals, I am excited to check out the cali sprint scene. My experience is strictly on a local level. We have done some 410 racing at Husets's speedway but have been doing mostly ASCS stuff. I typically go to the track as well as work in the shop during the week. I have only been doing this for 4 years but have had nothing but hands on experience in that time and have learned a ton. Motors...not my department, but I feel totally comfortable doing anything else that is asked, including chassis adjustments through the course of a race night. The tracks that we have the most laps at are Huset's, Jackson, I-90, and Park Jefferson. We have also done plenty of racing at I-80 speedway, Knoxville and Little Rock(STN). I know these tracks don't mean alot to most people in CA but my point is that we have raced on all different sizes of tracks.

I do take racing very seriously, but I'm not looking to run the show or pretend like I'm some super badass crew cheif. I'm just looking to lend a hand and have some fun!

I can't comment on the racing, because like you said I don't reside there anymore. But California wing racing is on decline mode. Back in the 90's when they had NARC, GSC, weekly races at San Jose, was when California racing was awesome. Now like I said, they only have a handful of strong 410 teams. The best thing right now for California is this 360 stuff. It started out small, and now it's growing. They get strong car counts and race at nice facilities. I don't follow a lot of wingless racing...so I wouldn't know about that.
