Looking forward to Bakersfield again this year. Would like to have had some additional races but maybe next year. The Schweitzer family is awesome and although they have only a handfull of OW races, they make us feel extremely welcome.

Also there is a very large amount of OW teams from Bakersfield, counting sprint cars and midgets. It will be a thrill for the Bakersfield local racers to race before a packed hometown crowd. That is Carlile, Iturriria, May, Stansberry, Day, Kirkbride and the bunch...

Who is gonna de-throne Murphy there too??? He swept '08, can he keep the edge in '09?

Bakersfield's races in themselves are going to be interesting and worth the price of admission!

I know it's a paved track, (pavement racing doesn't interest me that much), but I'm still curious as to what is happening with that new 1/2 mi. track west of Bakersfield near I-5. Anyone?

Bakersfield is not paved. You might be thinking of Mesa Marin (dust now or more than likely homes). I think the new track west of town has run out of money.

Yes, the track he is referring to is paved. And the last word anyone got is that they are still seeking funding to complete the construction.

The Bandits and Lightning Sprints do not run on paved tracks, so no, it is not paved. The Bakersfield Speedway website touts it as "The West's Fastest 1/3 Mile High Banked Clay Oval."

I do not know whether they layed the pavement prior to suspending construction, but the track he is referring to most certainly is going to be paved.

Thanks for the info. It looked like things had come to a standstill there but it was kind of hard to tell for sure as I drove by on I-5. Maybe they could save some money by not paving it and just bring in some truck loads of clay!

I believe the first layer (s) of pavment was laid down a little over a year ago before the problems really began. The problems grew HUGE just last month when a 4.5 million construction loan taken out against the future of the property last March defaulted. The investers who provided that loan can legally take over the property. The property was appraised at nearly (or over) 30 millions dollars a couple of years ago meaning they would be getting it for just 4.5 million. That is one heckuva' profit and would be hard to turn down. One can just hope they are big race fans.
