How about teams maybe just wanting a weekend off. In latemodels, teams take off all the time for the World 100 and don't go. As a fan I don't take it out on the teams for not showing up. Long season and time off can be good. As a fan that gets to tavel all over the country and watch races, I consider myself lucky to watch big races and good races all over. I hear the Knoxville Nationals, Kings Royal and National Open are the crown Jewels of sprint car racing. I have been to the Knoxville Nationals and Kings Royal. I have watched the National Open on stream and can tell you I have no desire to go to it. Racing is consistantly bad and boring at the grove. This is just my take, but I am sure I am not the only one that feels this way. I actually went to a different race on Saturday night and only watched the Grove on replay. I didn't miss anything by not watching it.
There were also 6 HL teams there:
Sye Lynch (PA based)
Brent Marks (PA based)
Kasey Jedrzejek with CJB (PA based)
Taneer Holes with Buch (PA based)
Brady Bacon with Vermeer (new shop based in Port Royal-PA based)
Justin peck who was one of ONLY THREE yes ONLY THREE non outlaw or PA based teams there. Timms and Naida other two. I am just going to say it and it may hurt, but it is the truth. OUTSIDE OF CENTRAL PA THE NATIONAL OPEN IS NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL
|
I agree with Murphy the crown jewel thing is overblown but it is still a big deal in the region. If you walk through the parking lot you'll see license plates from all the northeast plus Ohio and southern states. I don't think Pa fans really care that much about it being a crown jewel because it's still a big draw and isn't having a big crowd what it's all about?

A big crowd is what it's all about, but that doesn't make it a crown jewel. Beaver Dam (or the artist formally known as Beaver Dam) and Wilmot Wisconsin's crowds bust at the seams. They aren't (or weren't) crown jewels. I've been to Outlaw shows at 34 Raceway--not a seat to be had--not a crown jewel.
Big payout? Some argue this makes a crown jewel. It might be super cool for the driver/team to win, but that doesn't, and shouldn't constitute a crown jewel either. I mean, Daytona is a self proclaimed crown jewel of Nascar and there is nothing all week that has any bearing on who wins this race. There's a bunch of smoke and mirrors that are meant to resemble "qualifiers" and "eliminations." They mean nothing. At the end of the day, it's all 3-4 hours of 2 lane freeway, followed by 10 laps of demo derby that ANY driver in the field can win. Not a crown jewel. Stupid. $1,000,000 to win or not. It's just a cool payday. Not a real accomplishment to happen to be at the front of this field when the checkers fall since the last 10 laps are the only time they are at 100% throttle the entire race. Did I emphasize STUPID yet?
The Knoxville Nationals are a crown jewel:
1. Big crowd: check
2. Big payouts: check (notice the plural on payout)
3. Multi-day format where the winner of this event had to be good in all phases of the event OR show great speed during the finale in order to win (which if you didn't perform during the first phases of this event, you had to pass a ton of cars to win this race): CHECK!!!
There are some great events in sprint car racing. Few check the boxes that the Nationals check. If other races are considered crown jewels, then there have to be other levels of crown jewel. Saying the Grove and KR are crown jewels in the same sentence as the Nats is a crime.

I think you're taking this a little too seriously. Everyone knows Knoxville is the tops nobody is disputing that. Look the NO has been around since 1963 I believe the year before the nationals if you don't want to call it a crown jewel who cares it's still a big event in a Sprint Car hotbed. Has 34 been hosting events as long?

I usually try to stay out of pissing matches but you have emphasized the word stupid pretty well. You might want to lighten up a little. No one is trying take the Nationals spot at the top. It used to be on my bucket list but I have removed it. I hope to make acouple of other Knoxville races.

It seems there are now only two kinds of big sprint car races out there:
1) All those Knoxville Nationals races that are Crown Jewels, as aprroved by egras
2) All other races that don't pass the egras test

My bad. I'll disregard this entire post and conversation. I could have sworn the conversation started with wanting to know where all of the top high limit guys were at for a $75,000 to win race, and then it morphed from there. I guess I'll just be completely baffled then.
I don't know why there weren't 100 cars at this massive, crown jewel of a race. Shocking to me.
That better?

My non-subject matter expert take:
THE crown jewel- Knoxville
A national crown jewel- Kings Royal
East Coast crown jewels- Tusky 50 and the National Open
West Cost crown jewels- Dirt Cup and Gold Cup (both dipped in luster, but getting build back up), plus the Trophy Cup (intersted to see how the switch to 410 goes)
T-Shirt Events- the Doty, Ironman 55, Ohio Speedweek, PA Speedweek

Excellent List
These are the ten races that WoO and HL need to come together on and fully support. Then create national schedules that don't compete with each other. When HL is out west, WoO out east etc
