I'm not claiming to be a historian of sprint car racing. I know a lot of people know much more about the history of sprint car racing than I do, but I'm 55 years old. I've been attending sprint car races regularly since I was 4 years old. I started reading my dad's Speed Sports when I was about 11 years old, and got my own subscription when I moved out on my own. Until the Flood of '93, I owned every edition of Open Wheel. Through the years I've had subscriptions to Stock Car Racing (which occasionally had sprint car articles,) Circle Track, Flat Out, Sprint Car and Midget, among others, and I have never heard of the "Band of Outlaws." What I seem to remember is that Ted Johnson took a band of outlaw sprint car drivers and organized them into the "World of Outlaws." Pardon me, if there was an organization called the "Band of Outlaws," and I missed it. 

 

With that being said, the "Band of Outlaws" wasn't my problem with the article. I basically found that humorous. My main problem is that to someone who knows nothing about sprint car racing, it makes sprint car racing sound like a bunch of renegade misfits traveling around the country. What got me more than anything is the sentence, "Today, sprint-car racing is a little safer but no less pugnacious."

I was trying to find out a little more info on the car Swindell drove Saturday night at Moberly. I ran across this from the History Channel website. I find it hard to believe that whoever wrote this, or approved it, for the History Channel didn't do more research. It's so screwed up that it's laughable, but sad at the same time. I wonder if this is the way the non-racing world views sprint car racing.

A pretty worthless piece of shit writing IMO. The only thing right about the entire article is Sammy's date of birth.

Vande, you need to spend a few hours with Alan Brown, you would most enjoy it.  Few people on the planet, if any, have more knowledge about our sport than this man.  I was fortunate enough to spend time with him in his basement and saw what this man has gathered over the years, WOW.  One thing I will never forget is a compilation of ever fatality ever in this sport, more than 600 of them and most from the precage years.  You want to talk racetracks, check out his books on them or simply ask, you mind will explode.  I thought I was a stats guy until that day and it didn't take long to figure out, I hadn't scratched the surface.  Alan and Nancy are two of the biggest treasures our sport has known.....

This article did do one good thing...It made me realize how happy I am that Rick Ferkel went out west with grooved dragcar tires mounted for his right rears. Had it not been for him making the humper so popular I would not be able to enjoy the "Flamboyant" acceleration a sprint car displays as it "Screeches" around the track "Careening off other cars" and daring them not to tumble.


Loose is when you hit the wall with the rear of the
car, tight is when you hit the wall with the front of
the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and
torque is how far you move the wall.
