F1 UPDATE: McLaren Excluded from '07 Constructors' ChampionshipWritten by: RACER staff Paris, France – 9/13/2007
Ron Dennis' team will have to pay a record $100m in addition to submitting its '08 challenger to FIA scrutiny to ensure it doesn't benefit from Ferrari intelectual property. (LAT Photo) MORE PHOTOS
Amidst much confusion from news services worldwide, which originally reported that McLaren had been banned from the '07 and '08 Formula 1 championships, the verdict from today's World Motor Sport Council meeting finally came to light: the silver team has been excluded from the '07 constructor's championship but will be allowed to carry on racing, with Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso retaining their driver's season points. The confusion was triggered because even though the FIA did recommend that McLaren be banned, the actual verdict is cast only after the WMSC's 26 members have deliberated and voted. Hamilton thus continues to lead the championship with 92 points, three more than Alonso and 18 ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen with only four races still to be contested this season. In addition, the WMSC also determined that McLaren's 2008 challenger will come under scrutiny before being raced to ensure it doesn't benefit from any intellectual property belonging to Ferrari.

Finally, the Woking, UK-based outfit will have to pay a staggering $100m fine.

i heard he also bought McLaren and Ferarri so that the 20 and 15 sprint teams could not be fined for potential spying on them.

It's $100 million USD, here's what McLaren had to say after the verdict...lol.
"...as you can see if you read our accounts, we turn over roughly $450-500 million USD a year, and we are debt-free, so obviously we are a very strong company with phenomenal growth.
"I jokingly asked [Mercedes motorsport director] Norbert [Haug] if he was going to chip in half, but we haven't really come to a conclusion on that negotiation." - Ron Dennis (McLaren team principal)

Cowabunga...
Mercedes sold roughly 350 McLaren SLR Roadsters in the USofA in the last year with a MSRP of approxiamtely $490,000.00 per unit. Good God, that's roughly 173 million in sales from that beast alone.
I think they got it covered.

hell, make de la Rosa and Alonso pay for it. They were 2 of the 3 McLaren boys that caused the mess. The full report was posted on Speed's website today.
