You can get into the game with a $50 (used) mower," says "Blades of Thunder" Bonville, "You won't be a front-runner, but you'll be out there having fun."

He acknowledges that some have invested as much as $16,000 in their mowers. "It's a sport where you can run as fast as your money."

The best mower for racing? "Ask 15 guys and you'll get 15 answers."

The rules are simple. Blades and deck must be removed before a mower can compete, drivers must wear a helmet, and all mowers must have a kill switch that will stop the machine if the driver falls off.

My Grandma just bought a new CUB CADET from the home depot ....Mowed the yard the other day ! MAN DOES THAT THING FLY !!!!! not to mention it corners great too ....

winners dont cry when they lose , they go back to the 
drawing board and come back for round 2 !

Quickest one I have seen is racing indoors is Lawson's out of southern Oklahoma. He runs a Yamaha 450 single liquid cooled engine. However he has trouble handling the big OHV singles. Dixon claims to have the fastest riding mower with blades turning. The world's fastest ZTR mower, The Dixie Chopper, cuts at 15 mph and can mow a football field in less than 10 minutes! None of the Hot Rod Mowers have decks or blades.

The Five State Championship has no engine limits. Motorcycle Engine with clutch and transmission, Single Flat Head, Single Overhead Valve, Twin Flat Head, Twin Over Head Valve. Must run gasoline, racing gasoline allowed any VP or other race gasoline product allowed. No methanol or nitro methane allowed.

There are some very strong running singles in Texas and Oklahoma. Hard to beat the torque of the Overhead Valve singles coming off the corners.

Line has been drawn in the dirt. The Challenge has been made. Any and all Hot Rod Mower Racers in the Five State area are invited to participate. Those not choosing to race will be considered to have forfeited the Five State Mow Down challenge, and will be hauled out with the clippings.

"Bobby Cleveland, "America's most decorated lawnmower racer," set the record for ‘‘world’s fastest lawnmower’’ at the Bonneville Salt Flats on the Fourth of July. Cleveland's goal was to reach 104 MPH on his custom built mower, but after four attempts, his fastest average speed was 80.752. But since no record yet exists for this category of racing, he set an official record anyway!"

I think Lawson lives here! Who knew? You mean Tony Lawson? He's pretty serious about it.
