Jonathan Allard leads all 30 laps for Thursday Gold Cup win

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA - September 6, 2007... Chico’s Jonathan Allard came into the 54th Gold Cup Race of Champions looking for a strong run and that’s exactly what he accomplished after leading all 30 laps during opening night to pick up his first career World of Outlaw prelim win. The 31 year-old Chico native looked comfortable all night long as he won his heat race, the eight lap dash and dominated the 30 lap main event.

Jonathan began the evening by turning the seventh fastest lap in the field of 47 World of Outlaw Sprint Series racecars. JA drew a late number but was still able to cut a solid lap and earn a nice amount of those ever important qualifying points.

After a month of tough luck, Jonathan finally had some good stuff shine down when pole sitter Donny Schatz jumped the start of the night’s third heat race. Race officials moved Schatz back one row and it bumped the GT Trends, K & N Filters, Red Line Oil No. 0 up to the pole. JA jumped out to the lead and never looked back in the 10 lap heat race to earn a starting birth in the dash. The good luck kept on coming as Jonathan drew the number one pill for the Crane Cams Dash. Just as in the heat race he throttled out of turn four into the lead and proceeded to dominate the eight lap contest to earn the pole for the 30 lap preliminary night feature.

The last couple Gold Cup prelims haven’t turned out the best for Jonathan and Williams Motorsports, but this night would be different. Keeping with the trend for the night he blasted into the lead at the waving of the green flag and stayed strong through multiple caution periods that slowed the pace of the race. Second running Brad Sweet only pressured JA once during the feature but Jonathan wouldn’t be denied and pulled away during each restart.

The final caution of the race came out on lap 26 and it set up a four lap dash to the finish. Jonathan remained poised and drove four of his best laps of the season to pull away and pick up one of his biggest career wins and first ever in a World of Outlaws sanctioned event. Jonathan thanked Ashley Smith and the crew for giving him a great car and gave much thanks to car owners Morrie and Katie Williams as well as all the great sponsors of the Williams Motorsports No. 0

After one night of action at the 54th annual Gold Cup Race of Champions, Jonathan finds himself on top of the point standings with 538 points. Tomorrow night will feature a new batch of drivers and we’ll just sit back and watch how everything plays out. Saturday night’s finale will pay $50,000 to win and will crown this year’s Gold Cup champ.
