Because he's a grade A driver. Pretty simple.

He is one of the best ever, he brings his car back to the trailer intact, and he always has individuals talking about him. A car owner and sponsor dream driver.

Sammy has done this for a very very long time. He is one of a handful of guys who can not just drive them, but wrench on them, build, and design these things. He has been highly sucessful at everything he has done when it comes to sprint cars.
He might not have the numbers that Steve has, but look how many times he did some form of design experimentation, or dabbled in NASCAR, Indy Cars, etc. There are teams out there that will fold up shop racing less races than he has in overall wins.
His temper does get the best of him at times, but the amount of expertise the man has as a racer is something that only a select few can match.
Regardless of someones personal opinion of him, he didn't acheive what he has solely on luck.

That pretty much sums up my thoughts as well.

At this point in his career he's a gold mine of information to a team pure and simple, if you approach right and ask good questions Sammy is a hell of a nice guy and knows damn near everything about a sprint car and the entire operation. I worked for him as a fill in for a month or longer off and on and learned more than while on another team 5 years. Sammy is a smart cat with degrees in engineering and will bring things real clear if you listen and ask good questions. Iloved just listening to his information and racing stories, Il never forget the short time I spent with him and the crew and his family.

Finally! A question or an inquiry about Sammy that brings out the positive comments about his career and abilities that he richly deserves! AND as he has shown of late (especially tonight at the Nationals before the engine let go)..... The man can still turn a wheel in a sprint car! He only needs decent equipment, and he will make it better.

Watching Sammy pass The King for the win was the high point of the evening for me... (from 8th?) may be the last time we see that one

Plus Sammy might be the best at setting up a car. Best driver/ Crew Chief hands down!

A: He is good. At not only driving but setting up and engineering. He can teach almost every team out there something.
B: I believe that he truely does not give a shit. By that I mean that he does not have to take any ride available, he has been in position to say no to anything he feels is less than the best for a long time.

Great thread here. I think you really hit on something with him being able to teach everyone something. Jason johnson was asked a question about what he learned from ohters that were in his car when he was hurt and he said Sammy taught the team a lot about shocks.
