In 1987, Steve won 46, including 24 of the last 26. Also had a streak of 12 straight that year.

Keeping in mind that in 1987 Kinser did not race against his toughest competitors Wolfgang and Swindell night after night as neither of them ran anything close to a full WoO schedule that year. Even with those two missing though, I still believe Kinser faced tougher competition every night that season than Schatz currently races against.

It's impossible to accurately compare fields Schatz competes against with those that the King faced in 87.
Passing is a whole lot harder today and the 15 still finds away to do it. The cars are much more equal and the current packages don't allow for a lot of passing. However, the skill gap in 87 was a lot larger so the cream was able to rise to the top consistently.
I'm sure people will beat this one in the ground but there's absolutely no way to say which is a superior season. Let's just settle on them both being amazing feats.

Could Schatz handle living out of a dually for ten months at a time instead of his motor home and private plane with still winning 20 plus races?
Kinser might of had slightly easier competition but a hell of a lot harder traveling conditions racing cars that were probably a lot harder to race.
Not saying he couldnt... but could he?

I knew my statement about completion today vs 1987 would draw a lot of disagreement. I have lived both eras and I base my opinion on the fact that there are still drivers from those years that are competitive today when givin the opportunity to be in top line equipment. Whatever one's opinion is about today's equipment, one thing is fact.... Those with the most money rule, the rest are also rans. Also, the competition was much deeper back in those years. Not just with the WoO, but in the key areas of the sprint car nation such as the Posse as just one example. Many states had stand out drivers not on tour. Also, more races are won from the front row today than ever before. Racing from the back to the front was common place back then, which also conditioned drivers to be more comfortable in lapped traffic. Only a few drivers today run laped traffic consistantly in an exceptional manner. Schatz is one of those that can. Anyway..... Let the disagreement continue.

According to my count, Steve won more than 21 races ten different seasons.

One of my complaints of this board is the revisionist history that occurs. How people could come online and state that Steve was not dominant in 87 is unbelievable.
I guess many of these are the same people that think that the reason Sammy did not win more races because he was busy an innovator.

Wolfie won 55 in 1985 (17 in a row) but not necessarily with WoO - he ran everywhere. Won the King's Royal and Knoxville that year. Steve won 51 or 52 in '81 or '82 and later won 56. That info comes from Bob Trostle's autobiography, "Life's Tough On The Circuit"

Schatz still finds a way to pass every night? He is obviously having a faboulous season, but you make it sound as though he is starting 12th or 15th and driving to the front every night as opposed to starting in the front.
