Hello race fans,
Highlights from Friday night's USAC Midget race at Dodge County Fairgrounds in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin are now available on the front page at www.millsvideoproductions.com
This week's "Clip of the Week" is brought to you by Wilke PAK racing, owners of the Mopar Racing #11 driven by Jerry Coons, Jr. Thanks to Greg Wilke for sponsoring the clip.
I have to say some things about this race...From the moment he hit the racetrack, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. put on a show of epic proportions. After setting quick time, charging from 8th to the lead in a couple of laps in his heat, he proceeded to dominate the spotlight in the feature until catching the wall in turn 1 and 2 and flipping on lap 17 of the feature. Not since witnessing Tony Stewart's amazing victory at Calistoga in the summer of '94 have I ever seen anyone throw caution to the wind so brazenly. I swear I thought I was living the moment all over again. The only difference was, after nearly turning over a couple of dozen times back on that hot summer day (July 2nd, 1994, to be exact), Stewart used a last corner, last lap pass on Johnny Cofer to pull out the win, while Ricky's day ended abruptly 13 laps early. It's a real shame, too. Because Ricky was clearly the class of the field. And that's no direspect to eventual winner Jerry Coons, Jr., or the rest of the field. And for what it's worth, I've seen Jerry Coons mature into the smoothest, classiest midget racer on the planet. Jerry appears to never be rattled, and even when he's not at his best, still manages to find a way into victory lane. After watching him race for the better part of the last 20 years from coast to coast, it is clear Jerry is at the top of his game these days, and it is simply amazing to watch his great car control. He's the smoothest racer I've ever seen, since maybe Mike Kirby.
Kudos to Jerry, Ricky, and the rest of the field for putting on a great show at Dodge County on Friday. There simply was not enough time to show all the highlights from that night. Between Hammerhead's jaw dropping slide jobs and cushion busting moves to Hagen's thrilling run from the back of the pack, to the flyers put on by Sweet, Kuhn, Ray and Levi, to Brady Bacon's charge from last to 5th, this was a night I will not soon forget. I hope you all enjoy the highlights...Sincerely,
