Troy Rutherford takes Main
Last Saturday night proved to be another night of great racing at Ventura Raceway as the VRA Sprints, VRA Dwarf Cars, IMCA Modifieds and Kids classes put on a night of racing that many will not soon forget.
VRA Sprints saw Troy Rutherford finally shake off some bad luck and have a good night as he took his first win of the 2007 season in his number 11 sprinter. He had to battle point leader Greg Taylor, Clark Templeman III and Kevin Kierce to get the hard fought victory. Taylor finished second to increase his series point lead to 265 points over Kierce and 555 points over 2006 series champion Luis Espinoza. Heat race wins went to Brian Camarillo, Chris Wakim Brandon Thomson, and Rutherford. Rick Hendrix took the 12 lap semi main.
A non-FAIR IMCA race record number of cars raced in the IMCA Modified portion of the night. Twenty-six cars were in the pits necessitating a semi main event. The top eight from the semi main transferred to the feature which started 20 cars. The 20 lap main event was a hotly contested one with Ron Wiley leading, after getting by Rob Green, until the last turn of the last lap when he broke entering turn four allowing a hard charging Robert Clab to take his first IMCA win at Ventura. Damon Redman ran strong to take second with Randy McGraw taking third. Heat race wins went to Rob Green, Andrew Greiman and Clab. Point leader Jack Parker finished 14 but still holds a 17 point lead in the series point’s race with two races to go in the 2007 season for this fast growing class.
VRA Dwarf Cars raced in two divisions. In the Pros, Brian Saxton returned to Ventura raceway to take the win in the Pro Division. Ed Niedzwiecki took another win and maintains his season points lead in the Seniors. Dwarf Car heat race wins went to Kevin Alverson and Bill Van Praag in Seniors and point leader Jim Scribellito and Saxton in Pros.
The final groups racing last weekend were there three kids’ classes that have proven to be so popular this season. In the Mini Dwarf Piston Class, Jimmy McDonald took the win in a hard fought race with point leader Ricky Lewis. In Mini Dwarf Super Chargers, Tyler Jerman took the win to close to within 15 points of class point leader Riley Helland. In the Junior Midgets, Jessica Clark took the win and moved into the point lead by 30 points over Amanda Green.
This weekend we return to action with the second visit of the USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Cars along with our VRA Senior Sprints. Be sure to make plans to be there for this exciting program.
