Almost Halfway… Nevermind…
Hemby Bridge, NC – After doing a quick spreadsheet of all the sprint car racing going on in the Carolinas, it was brought to my attention that we aren’t quite halfway through the season yet, even though we are entering the two hottest months of the year.
Twelve sprint car races have seen the checkers waved in North and South Carolina so far this season involving five different sanctioning bodies.
On Friday, May 22nd, the Greatest Show on Dirt, the World of Outlaws made the inaugural trip of the season to the Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Fans were able to witness greatness in all its glory as Donny Schatz chased down David Gravel and went on to record his eleventh victory of the season. We’ll have to wait till the first weekend in November before we’re able to feel the rumble of winged 410 sprints again in the Carolinas as the World Finals take center stage in the world of dirt track racing.
The United Sprint Car Series has sanctioned three events in the Carolinas through June with Eric Riggins sweeping a weekend at Carolina and Lancaster. A surprise rookie by the name Nick Snyder, out of Southern Florida would nab a nonstop feature at Travelers Rest in the South state. The USCS Southern Tour altogether has sanctioned five races in the Southeast thus far, with at least thirteen more events including their Southern Speedweek starting mid-July. Winged 360 teams are about to tackled the brunt of the schedule in the next two weeks.
The Carolina RaceSaver Sprint Car Series has been the most consistent series in the Carolinas with five completed events lead by Matt Hope with two wins, the series only repeat winner. Other series winners include former champions Jacob McLain and Johnny Petrozelle. Mike Leraas would win the series inaugural trip to Lancaster Motor Speedway. The series still has seven races remaining on their schedule with visits to two new tracks, Travelers Rest Speedway and Harris Speedway, visiting each track twice.
The Carolina RaceSavers aren’t the only 305s scheduling races in the Carolinas. Their close companion, the Virginia Sprint Series was spotted racing at Dixieland Speedway in Elizabeth City, NC May 29th with Chris Ware taking first spot. French Grimes and the Virginia travelers will converge on Elizabeth City twice more this year.
I guess since technically they are winged sprint cars, I’ll include a paragraph on our asphalt brothers of the Must See Racing Extreme series, a 410 group out of the upper Midwest who decided to venture south for two shows at the famed Hickory Motor Speedway. Aaron Pierce and Jeff Bloom would claim victors that particular weekend. The neat thing about this group is they have scheduled another weekend in the South October 23rd and 24th, but they won’t tell anyone were it is!
