Hemby Bridge, NC – The 3rd Annual Carolina Sprint Car Flea Market was in full bloom when Richard Wetmore approached Poppa and said, “Hey you, yeah you…need you to build me a badass RaceSaver motor for 2015.” Poppa said aight…

A few days later, Richard Wetmore approached THE Jack Elam and said “Hey you, yeah you… need you to build me a badass J&J for 2015.” Jack’s wife Bonnie said aight…

Then Richard set sail for the cold coast of Chile and then the hot coast of San Diego and then the even temped coast of Japan, and then other coasts that vary in temperature delivering everything from power plants to keychains made in China.

Upon his return to ‘Merica, he would find out that his driver, Matt Hope, caught some pretty good buzz with his attempt to chase down future Carolina RaceSaver Hall of Fame Driver, Jacob McLain, in the closing laps of the season opener at Sumter Speedway.

This past Thursday night, Richard kissed the bow of his beloved ship and smashed the mandatory jar of Ole’ Smoky Moonshine 190 proof on the hull of SS Natalie before heading west from Charleston to his race shop in Rock Hill, SC to tweak on his passion, winged sprint cars.

A tired and exhausted owner of two sprinters would roll his camper and cars into the tight pits of East Lincoln Speedway on Saturday night with a hope of “doing aight.”

Thirty-three laps later, a tired and exhausted owner of two sprinters would roll his sprinter into Victory Lane. After the driver gave a passionate speech thanking everyone from his gorgeous daughter and wife to even the sticker man, the microphone veered toward Richard…

He said…”I’m gonna sleep good tonight.”

On a personal note…. I laughed at 2 year old Ellissa Hope to her face when she showed up wearing a shirt that said “My daddy is faster than yours.” It was really tough trying to avoid her after the race. Nothing worse than getting shown up by a two year old no matter how many beers you had that night.

Every weekend super cool stories are made at little dirt tracks across the country. Thanks for sharing some of ours with the sprint car world, Brandon.  Congrats Richard and driver Matt Hope, nice run, from what I could see!   haha
