Wood Racing Partners with Bryan Clauson for NSL/Knoxville in 2015!

(Bill W) February 2, 2015 – The Elk Grove Ford Motorsports/Cole Wood Racing #17w team welcomes Bryan Clauson on board for the 2015 season.  The partnership will include running the National Sprint League and Knoxville Raceway, as well as regional events with the World of Outlaws.  Bryan, a native of Noblesville, Indiana, will also be running the Indianapolis 500 for Jonathan Byrd’s Racing.

Bryan has accumulated over 140 wins in his career in sprint car, midget and Silver Crown action. The two-time USAC National Sprint Car and Midget champion is looking forward to his opportunity with Wood Racing.  “This is really a perfect fit, at least on my end,” he says.  “They have really good equipment, and they have a good team put together.  I would say racing with the NSL is a good opportunity to learn, but it’s as tough a lineup as any 410 series right now.  We get to go to tracks a couple times, and that will be good for me as I learn the wing stuff.”

He last competed at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2012, and his return this season will cost him a few sprint shows in May.  “We’ll have to miss maybe two or three in May, because I’m running the 500,” says Bryan.  “But we’re planning on racing with the NSL and Knoxville pretty much weekly. We’re going to focus on the Nationals and some select Outlaw shows over the summer.  We may race some other races that make sense for us.”

Bryan has found some wing success in the last couple of years, including some wins and qualifying for the Knoxville Nationals finale last season.  “I’m really excited,” says the 2014 Chili Bowl champ.  “Obviously, I’ve made a shift and want to focus more on the wing stuff this year.  This is a great opportunity with good people.”

Team owner Matt Wood is also very much looking forward to 2015.  "We are excited to have an opportunity to join forces with a driver the caliber of multi-time USAC Champion Bryan Clauson,” he says.  “Bryan has already demonstrated his versatility in midgets, Indy cars, and NASCAR.  We can't wait to see how he adapts to winged sprint cars."

Clauson’s NASCAR experience includes 26 Nationwide Series starts, including a pole start at Daytona in 2008 and a fifth place finish in Kentucky.  He also holds a win in ARCA at Gateway near St. Louis in 2007.  Among other accomplishments he is a two-time Belleville Midget Nationals champion, a two-time Turkey Night Grand Prix winner, and has won Indiana Midget Week and Indiana Sprint Week two times each.

The first National Sprint League race will be Saturday, April 11 at 34 Raceway near West Burlington, Iowa.  Knoxville Raceway will open its season on Saturday, April 18.

This is great! Disappointed to see a young talent out but to see someone who races in the Indy 500, weekly at Knoxville in a good ride, is a pleasant suprise.

Last year at Knoxville was possibly the stoutest ever however with the NSL in the midwest now ...can it get any better?

No doubt about that. I'm from PA and I wish we had weekly fields at The Grove like Knoxville had last year. Talk about stacked. I think it will be no time at all before Clauson is contending for wins. As far as natural ability is concerned, he's as good as anyone.

It was Cole's decision to step away from the schedule we had been running to go to college.  Hopefully we can get him some starts in the midget this summer.  EXCITED to get an opportunity to have Bryan in the car.  The Clausons are great people and I'm excited about the upcoming year.  NOW WE JUST NEED A CREW CHIEF!!!!!!!!

Wasn't Forbrook helping Dobmeier last year with the Lunstra Team? With that team in limbo I'd think he'd be available.

Bryan can drive anything you put him in. He probably wont win the NSL points if he misses some races but I bet he will still rack up some wins. Excited to have possibly an even more competitive field at Knoxville this year. Its good that Woods car found another driver for the time being. Keeps the team sharp and up to date. Not to mention we won't loose a weekly competitor!

Very cool, Im sure he will be running in the top 5 or 10 right out of the shoot, he looked great last year in the few winged races he ran.

He ran twice in the spring last year with the ASCS at Cocopah for the BWW team, and looked decent given his limited winged experience (14th to 9th & 8th to 5th).  He also ran the Front Row Challenge with BWW, but didn't qualify out of the B.  I think he had plans to run some 410 races at Knoxville with the BWW team, but all got rained out.  When he did make it on 7/26, the LR wheel fell off in hot laps, he crashed, and they scratched for the night.  He qualified 27th (out of 70 cars) at the Cappy Classic, backed up his heat (2nd to 5th), and finished where he started in the B (8th).  That format was as tough as any all year though, so whatever.  On opening night of the 410 Nationals, he timed in 22nd (out of 52 cars), went from 4th to 3rd in his heat, and lucked into the pole for the feature (track was lightning fast & narrow most of the night -- 14 cars faster than him didn't make it out of their heat).  He fell from 1st to 5th in the A, but it was still good enough for 14th overall in pts, locking him into the A Saturday.  He fell from 14th to 17th then in the A on Saturday.  No matter how you make the A at Nationals, you take it... but he could've easily been a C or D main car IMO.

From watching him run without a wing in a sprint and midget, he's obviously a great talent.

He's done ok in a winged 360, but I haven't seen enough of him in a winged 410 to suggest that he's capable of running with Lasoski, Brown, Ian, Zomer, T-Mac, Heskin, etc right off the bat at Knoxville and beyond.  I'm really excited that he's getting this opportunity and am interested to see how well he does... and hope he does well!  I think he needs a lot more laps not just at Knoxville, but everywhere else too.  Just my opinion... fire away!
