Santa Maria Speedway August 18 Recap

Santa Maria, CA - August 18, 2007...Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Fox 11 First at Ten Super Streets and Mini Stocks were in action Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.

*For a time the 30-lap Bandit Sprint Car feature event looked like the Albert Pombo show. The Easton driver broke on top at the drop of the green and led the first four circuits before being overtaken by Bakersfield's Rusty Carlile. Then, on lap 20, Pombo went back to the front and was pulling away until he brushed the wall on lap 24. His mount slowed, allowing several cars to get by, including eventual winner Greg Brag of Visalia. At the same time, a red flag came out when Santa Maria's Bill Jones lost a wheel in the south turns, keeping Pombo from dropping further than sixth in the field. Pombo was able to recover for a fourth place finish while cousin Davey Pombo, of Kerman, was able to come on for a second place finish behind Brag. Carlile held on for third and Atascadero's Greg Porte, who set fast time of 13.973 second averaging 85 mph, was fifth. Carlile, Camarillo's Dennis Rodriguez, Jr. and Visalia's Jace VanderWeerd won 8-lap heat races.

*Clay Daly, of Watsonville, scored his first victory of the season at SMS in the 25-lap IMCA Modified main event. Nipomo's Kenny Kirkpatrick picked up the lead from Santa Maria's Ron Wiley on the fourth circuit and held the point for 10 laps before giving way to Santa Maria's David Addamo. Addamo appeared headed for his first victory of the season at the Speedway when Daly made an outside move in the final turn of the final lap to score the victory. Addamo was a close second, followed by Paul Stone, Rich Denman, of Coalinga, and Joey Claborn of Santa Maria. Kirkpatrick had a problem on the second-to-last lap and wound up 13th. Kirkpatrick, Doug Thornton and Danny Lauer, both of Santa Maria, captured 8-lap heat races. Point leader Tim Breshears, of Santa Maria, won the 10-lap semi main.

*Tim Randolph swept the Super Street division, easily winning the 8-lap heat race and the 20-lap main event. The Santa Maria driver, who gave up the local points lead when he opted to run the East vs. West event at Bakersfield Speedway instead of the local points race back on August 4, gained 10 markers on point leader Tom Breshears of Santa Maria who placed fourth. Elton Shaffer, of Santa Maria, and Cole Milton, of Nipomo, were second and third, and August 4 feature winner Kyle Heckman, of Nipomo, was fifth.

*Point leader Ken Kehs, of Arroyo Grande, was back in championship form in the Mini Stocks, snaring his sixth 20-lap feature victory of the season, after finishing out of the winner's circle two races in-a-row. Second place went to Nipomo's Justin Marsh with Atascadero's Aaron Cervantes, Arroyo Grande's Justin Crockett and Santa Maria's Pat Fausel filling out the top-five. Santa Maria drivers Bill Jewell and Frank Nyback captured 8-lap heat races.

*Next Saturday night Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds and Fox 11 First at Ten Super Streets will be back on the oval, joined this time by Factory Stocks. As an added attraction the 1st Annual Mini Stock Media Challenge race will be held, pitting four local TV and radio personalities against each other in a race of their own. Tickets will cost $14.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors (65+), $3.00 for children 6 to 12, 5 and under free. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on Hutton Road.

Ballou Bags Second Straight Sprint Bandits TNT Win in Lakeside Prelim
by Lonnie Wheatley

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (August 17, 2007) – California's Robert Ballou snared his second O'Reilly Sprint Bandits Tour 'N Topless feature win in as many nights and earned the pole position for Saturday night's $10,000 to win Ron Shuman Classic by topping Friday's 25-lap preliminary feature at Lakeside Speedway.

Ballou powered by Brady Short for the lead on the eighth round and led the rest of the way to secure his third career Sprint Bandits TNT feature win in front of Short, 16th-starter Tim Kaeding and Jesse Hockett, each of whom are also locked into the front two rows of Saturday's Third Annual Sprint Bandits TNT Midwest Swing finale.

Ballou survived a hole in a radiator hose over the final rounds to post the win and climbed to within four points of Tim Kaeding in the Sprint Bandiits TNT Midwest Swing points chase. "I kept watching the temperature and it was alright so I kept going. We'll have to look the engine over tonight though to make sure it's alright."

After surviving a pair of flips earlier in the week, Damion Gardner earned the pole position for the feature with Short alongside and Ballou inside the second row.

The initial start of the feature was waved off when South Dakota's Bret Mellenberndt slid too high entering turn one and flipped after contact with the wall. Mellenberndt was uninjured.

Gardner gunned into the lead on the restart with Ballou and Short chasing until the caution flew after three laps for Gary Taylor, who tagged the turn four wall with Matt Rossi also suffering front end damage in the scramble behind Taylor.

Short motored past Ballou for second on the restart and took the point from Gardner on the sixth round. Short's lead was brief however, as Ballou raced in front the next time around to take command for keeps aboard the Don Ott-powered MPHG Promotions No. 81 Maxim.

Ballou gradually opened up a straightaway lead over Gardner by the 20th round. But Gardner's week of bad luck continued as a cut left rear tire brought him to a stop on the backstretch on the 21st lap. Gardner rejoined the chase at the tail.

Ballou took off once again on the restart and took the checkered flag with a half straightaway's worth of breathing room over Short in Scott Benic's Lucas Oil Products No. 2b.

After struggling in his heat race, current Sprint Bandits TNT Midwest Swing points leader Tim Kaeding raced from seventh to third in his qualifying race to earn the 16th starting position in the feature.

Kaeding advanced ten positions by the time the caution flew after seven laps for debris in turn three, raced past Neil Shepherd for fifth by the tenth round and moved to fourth when misfortune struck Gardner.

Kaeding picked off Jesse Hockett in the final rounds to claim third, with defending TNT Midwest Swing champion Hockett settling for the fourth and final lock-in position.

Shepherd raced from eleventh to round out the top five, with Hunter Schuerenberg charging from 14th to sixth. Mat Neely climbed from 13th to seventh in front of 12th-starter Don Droud, Jr., with Gardner racing back through the field to claim ninth. Casey Shuman came from 17th to complete the top ten.

Gardner, Ballou, Mike Leslie and Short topped heat race action for the 35-car field, with Hockett, Schuerenberg, Dustin Morgan and Neely winning qualifying races.

Making his Sprint Bandits TNT debut, Ohio teen Ricky Williams held off Cory Kruseman to win the 12-lap "B" Main then climbed from 19th to eleventh in the feature.

The Third Annual O'Reilly Sprint Bandits Tour 'N Topless Midwest Swing wraps up with Saturday night's $10,000 to win Ron Shuman Classic at Lakeside Speedway.

Ballou Pockets $10K in Ron Shuman Classic at Lakeside
by Lonnie Wheatley

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (August 18, 2007) – Robert Ballou put the wraps on the Third Annual O'Reilly Sprint Bandits Tour 'N Topless Midwest Swing by posting a commanding victory in Saturday night's $10,000-to-win 30-lap Ron Shuman Classic at Lakeside Speedway.

Ballou wired the field for his third consecutive TNT win of the week and earned a share of the Sprint Bandits TNT Midwest Swing championship, as he and Tim Kaeding ended up knotted atop the point charts to become TNT co-champions splitting first and second place money of $2,500 and $1,500 to earn $2,000 apiece.
After winning Friday night's preliminary feature to earn the pole position for Saturday's finale, Ballou gunned into the lead at the outset on Saturday night and led throughout aboard the Don Ott-powered MPHG Promotions No. 81 Maxim to post his fourth career series victory.

And he did it without the help of any brakes over the final two-thirds of the race.

"I lost my brakes after that yellow flag nine laps into the race," Ballou explained in victory lane. "I was lucky we got those cautions when we did, otherwise Tim (Kaeding) probably would have got by me in lapped traffic."

In addition to the $10,000 winner's share, Ballou also earned the coveted pedal car trophy annually awarded to the Lakeside Speedway wingless winner. "That's what I really wanted was that pedal car."

Ballou got the jump on fellow front row starter Brady Short at the drop of the green flag and quickly raced away from the field as Short held off Kaeding for second.

The race's first caution flew after nine laps when Neil Shepherd got into the turn one wall, erasing Ballou's half straightaway lead. On the ensuing restart, Kaeding blasted around Short for second and tried unsuccessfully to keep pace with the fleet Ballou.

Four laps later, the caution flew again when Gary Taylor came to a stop on the backstretch. Taylor, piloting the mount driven by Cody Cordell earlier in the week after junking his primary mount on Friday night, rejoined the field at the tail.

With Ballou and Kaeding leading the way, Hockett battled past Short for third at the midway point. Kaeding began to reel Ballou in as lapped traffic came into play, but a caution after 24 laps for Mat Neely gave Ballou all the clear track he needed for the final six laps.

Ballou raced away from the field once again to secure the win, with Kaeding and Hockett taking the final podium positions. Teen shoe Hunter Schuerenberg posted his top finish of the week by advancing four positions to claim fourth, with Don Droud, Jr., also turning in his strongest drive of the week by racing from 11th to round out the top five as Short slipped to sixth in the final rounds.

After missing his heat race when his flight from Silver Crown in action in Springfield was delayed, Dave Darland won the "B" Main and then charged from 21st to seventh in the feature, with 16-year-old Cole Whitt, Cory Kruseman and 17th-starter Damion Gardner completing the top ten.

Taylor, Whitt, Chris Windom and Gardner topped heat race action, with Charles Davis, Jr., Chris Morgan, Kruseman and Casey Shuman winning the qualifying races.

Twenty different drivers competed in all five rounds of the Third Annual O'Reilly Sprint Bandits TNT Midwest Swing, including Ballou, Kaeding, Hockett, Whitt, Short, Kruseman, Shuman, Shepherd, Gardner, Neely, Davis, Schuerenberg, Michael Trimble, Chad Boat, R.J. Johnson, Droud, Jesse Mack, Mike Leslie, Bret Mellenberndt and Tony Everhart.

Sixty-eight drivers competed in at least one event over the course of the week.

JONES GETS CLOSER TO TITLE WITH CRA WIN

August 19, 2007 - Perris, Calif.....Tony Jones of Norco, Calif., continues to close-in on his first Lucas Oil USAC/CRA Championship. Starting sixth in the 30-lap feature race, Jones went on to win his fifth feature race of the season Saturday at the Perris Auto Speedway after putting his Alexander Trucking / La Villa Restaurant No. 4 DRC into the lead on the ninth lap.

Rip Williams started on the front row next to the Kittle Plumbing / PJ1 No. 18 Stinger driven by Santa Maria, California's Danny Sheridan. Williams won the race to the green flag and led Jimmy Crawford, Mike Spencer, Sheridan and fast qualifier Rickie Gaunt.

The second lap saw Spencer put his Ron Chaffin's Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply No. 50 Maxim into the second spot. While Spencer looked poised to win his third straight main event, Jones struggled during the early stages of the race and actually found himself further from the front than when he lined-up for the main event.

"In the beginning it seemed like we'd get behind someone, they'd make a mistake and I would lose a bunch of positions because I had to get out of the throttle," Jones later said. "We were kind of behind the eight ball, but I knew we had a good car and that we'd be alright."

A terrific side-by-side dual for the lead between Williams and Spencer quickly came to an end after Crawford flipped wildly entering the third turn on the fourth lap. Crawford was not hurt. The same could not be said for Williams' chances to earn his first victory of the season. Unbelievably, Williams couldn't get the steering wheel to lock properly and was forced to retire prior the restart.

Spencer assumed the lead for the restart, but the Temecula, California driver would not officially lead a lap on this night thanks to a great run off the turn-two cushion by Sheridan. A scary moment halted the action on lap nine after Jeremy Sherman's car went up in smoke and sprayed hot oil into the cockpit. Sherman was later released from the infield care unit after suffering a blister on his foot.

Jones moved into the third spot moments before the yellow flag for Sherman and made the most of the subsequent restart. Using the bottom of turns one and two, Jones pulled ahead of Spencer. Staying on the bottom, Jones passed Sheridan exiting turn-four before the end of the lap.

Once in the lead, the current USAC/CRA point leader was able to masterfully work his way through lapped traffic, preventing eventual runner-up finisher Sheridan from ever mounting a serious challenge. The win ended a long week for Jones who spent the majority of the week in Indianapolis with his son Kyle, who underwent spinal fusion surgery on Monday. After the race, Jones dedicated the win to his son.

Scotty Weir, Marion, Ind., made a late-race charge and was able to drive his Glenn Crossno / ITI Performance No. 38 Bullet to a third-place finish. Weir's teammate, David Cardey of Riverside, Calif., started in the sixth row before finishing one spot behind Spencer in fifth. Garrett Hansen's debut driving for Mark Preistley resulted in him earning Hard-Charger honors with his 16th to seventh-place drive.

Elbows-up wins for Lovell, Hawes, Gaoiran and Bender
Yuba City Scrap and Steel Ice Cream Night & Figure 8 Bombers this Saturday
By Bob Burbach

Marysville CA - August 19, 2007 --- Elbows up and hard on the gas produced winners in the 4 division show staged on Taco Bell Night at Paul and Kathy Hawes Marysville Raceway Park Saturday. A noisy, fun crowd enjoyed some spectacular open wheel racing. Korey Lovell and Jeremy Hawes got the attention of the checkered flag clad ladies who awarded the trophies in the sprint car divisions. Tony Gaoiran took the laurels in the Sprint 100 feature and Kevin Bender got the nod in the Nor Cal Dwarf Cars.

The Wingless Warriors of the Wingless Sprint Car Series were the first of the primary divisions to try their hand at 20 laps around the MRP ¼ mile. Pole sitter Josh Tucker was flanked by Jeremy Hawes in the Flyin’ Ford. Point leader Pat Russum had a dismal heat race and was mired in the rear of the 19 car starting field.

Hawes gunned his yellow and red rocket into the lead at the green flag with Tucker in tow. Chico’s Tony Richards blew into the high-side cushion an found 3rd right away with last week’s winner John Anderson right on his tail. Point contender Mark Hill diced for 4th through 6th while Russum was unable to make any progress in the first few circuits. In fact, Russum was the first driver to retire from the feature event after a turn 4 tangle with Santa Rosa’s Dave Press. Russum’s front end was folded in the collision and he was done for the night. Russum finished 19th. During that yellow flag segment, Richards also pulled off with an unknown malady, never to return.

When the new green appeared, Hawes was gone, but 2005 champ Steve Stein showed up in the top 7. Only Stein, from his 13th starting position, was going forward. Stein hooked up on the high side and as the race approached ½ way, picked off cars at will. He flew around first Hill and then Mark Ziske in a single lap securing 4th. Hill jumped to the high side after Stein’s pass and he, too, sailed by Ziske.

The race would quickly run to its conclusion after that. A 2 lap dash to the checkers did nothing to unseat Hawes. He led wire to wire for the impressive victory. Anderson stayed 2nd all night after a smooth pass for the runner up spot on Tucker. Newcomer Tucker tucked in behind Anderson and drove to a fine 3rd place ahead of Stein and Hill.

It will be interesting to see how the point standings are shuffled after tonight’s events. Hill’s 5th place finish combined with Russum accumulating the minimum points available to him may bring Hill within striking distance of the title with 2 races to go. Hawes run dominated the event and Stein’s passing job kept the fans on their toes.

The Winged Sprinters were next and in the words of feature winner Korey Lovell…WOW! It was also one of the most exciting, crowd pleasing winged car events of the year. If you were going to win this one, you were going to have to get your elbows up and work for it. Jeremy Burt of Grass Valley was the pole sitter flanked by 3-time champion Korey Lovell of Yuba City. Lovell got the jump at the start and 4th starting Mike Monahan was soon in the runner-up spot behind the potent #71. The next 10 laps were among the most exciting winged sprint car laps of the year. Monahan dove to the inside and pulled even to challenge Lovell in turn 1 on every one of those 10 laps. They were side by side exiting turn 2…nearly every lap. In turns 3 & 4 they would tiptoe through the turf with Monahan getting the best run much of the time, but unable to get by the screaming car of Lovell. Again and again Monahan would dive to the inside in turn 1 only to be turned away by Lovell’s skillful high side runs through the clay in the same turn. By any measure it was a great sprint car race. The winged rockets were on the edge on the challenging surface and that was an added, heart-pounding component to a thrilling show.

While all this was going on for the lead, quick qualifier, Herman Klein was on the top and carving his way to the front from 11th starting position. The struggle up front may have overshadowed Klein’s charge initially, but Klein was slamming his way through the cushion and got to 4th by ½ way.

Lovell started to put some distance on Monahan as the drivers endured some pretty stout physical stress in the final 10 circuits. But, Klein kept on flying high and eclipsed Burt for 4th as the race closed on 5 to go. Klein then put a nifty move on 2-time champion Brent Dothage and he was 3rd. With 2 to go a yellow came out when Rod Ramirez parked in turn 2.

Monahan and Klein closed up on Lovell for the final 2 lap dash. When the green flew, Lovell was the better of his two challengers. Monahan crossed the line ahead of Klein who sailed into turn 3 a bit hard on the final lap and lost his chance for a look at 2nd. Dothage was 4th with Burt doing some point racing soldiering along in 5th.

I think it’s worth noting here that 8th place finisher Jim Marsh of Live Oak remains seeded in 2nd position in the MRP championship points. Marsh is schoolteacher and runs a limited budget operation and generally arrives by himself. It came to this observer’s attention recently that Marsh has completed every race he has started this season…no DNFs. That, in and of itself, is amazing, but tonight Marsh had a stellar run in his heat race and won it going away after a daring turn 3 pass on a track that took some muscle to drive. While Marsh is realistic about his championship chances, he is ready to go each and every week. Here's a tip of the hat from this observer to “Gentleman Jim” on his fine 2007 performances.

The SORA Sprint 100s opened the feature events with a barnburner of their own. Champion driver Tony Gaoiran parlayed a dismal heat race finish into an impressive, daring, “on the cushion” run to the front.

Starting in the rear with fellow combatant and point leader Tim McLaughlin, the fleet pair started their collective runs to the front. But Tony G went to the top and was simply flying. His heat race problems (a bad coil) solved, Tony G barely made the starting call.

It took but 6 laps for Gaoiran to find the front and the rest of the race was a bout for 2nd. John Cardoni brought the race to an early, spectacular finish when he flipped in turn 3 while challenging Gregg Hansen for 3rd. Hanson, Cardoni and Jim Pfifer had outstanding runs that deserve mention here. The race was checkered with a couple of laps to go as the Cardoni/Hansen mess took some time to clean up. Cardoni was unhurt in the spectacular crash. The video seems to show the accident as “racing deal” and not much more.

The Nor Cal Dwarf Cars once again put on a whale of a show. Track conditions did not favor the small, volatile rockets…but it was a good one nonetheless. Quick Nick Davis led the field for the first few feature event circuits as point contenders Kevin Bender and Mike Grenert found their rhythm. Pat Weger was heavily involved in the dicing that got pretty intense at times early on.

At the first yellow flag this quartet seemed to have a grip on things. But, Bender was smooth on the bottom and that would pay big dividends later on. Grenert had big problems by ½ way and retired from the event. Yes, dwarf cars screaming through the infield can move 55-gallon drums of water with ease. Such was Grenert’s bad luck.

The new green produced a calm, calculated run by Bender as he closed on Davis. It was quick in coming as Bender slipped by Davis in turn 4 and started to run away. Davis and Weger would dice for the runner up spot with Davis prevailing in the end.

The mighty alcohol burning Winged Sprint Cars and the Wingless Sprint Car Series will be back for complete programs of their heart-stopping wheel-to-wheel action next week. The 6th annual Yuba City Scrap and Steel Ice Cream Night will be presented as well. Ice cream will be provided for spectators and competitors alike. 2nds and 3rds will be available till it all runs out!!! It’s always a gas and a great time is had by all. The KKCY Mini Stocks, their red hot point race and the SORA Sprint 100s will also be on the card. In addition the EXTREME BOMBERS will once again tackle the FIGURE 8 COURSE. If you haven’t yet seen it…. don’t miss the metal grinding mayhem of this event!!

Pit gates always open at 3PM. Spectator Gates Open at 5PM with racing getting underway at 7PM. Contact the promoters at 1.530.743.1327 or email as indicated on the home page. Placerville’s Andy Gregg wins long awaited hometown feature event
By Bill Sullivan

PLACERVILLE – Back on the opening night of the season, Placerville’s Andy Gregg was just one lap away from winning his first ever hometown victory at Placerville Speedway. On that particular night a controversial pass by out of state driver Brandon Wimmer dashed Gregg’s effort and has since motivated the local veteran to rally back before his home track crowd.

Saturday night, Gregg finally had the opportunity to climb from his Guts Racing #16x in victory lane at Placerville Speedway where he was greeted by an abundance of local fans and family members, celebrating his first ever win here and his second feature event of the season.

“Going into the final laps I was confident I had this one,” said Gregg. ‘For the first time I wasn’t worried something was going to happen on the last lap like I have in the past.”

Visibly excited with his effort, Gregg made light of opening night incident that so many still talk about today. “Of course Brandon Wimmer wasn’t racing behind me tonight,” mused Gregg. “If he was running here I probably wouldn’t have won again, he would have passed me on the last lap and I’d be upside down or something again.”

Gregg started the feature event in the pole pole position and led every moment of the 25-lap feature that ran non stop. Although he started on the point, the victory was far from a cake walk for the former motocross and midget lite racer. From the drop of the green flag, Gregg had four of the sports most competitive drivers on his tail.

Early in the event second place starter Scott Russell of Placerville was Gregg’s closest threat. On the 13th lap Russell was passed by Auburn’s Andy Forsberg who had charged through the field from the sixth position, passing Placerville’s Jimmy Trulli and Greg DeCaires of Elk Grove before overtaking Russell.

Forsberg was rapidly closing in on Gregg in the closing laps while Russell, Trulli and DeCaires all traced close for the third position remaining in striking distance should anything occur between Gregg and Forsberg. Slicing and dicing their way through lapped traffic, Gregg and Forsberg kept the crowd on the edge of their seats all the way to the checkered flag where Gregg was followed by Forsberg, Russell, DeCaires and Trulli.

Saturday’s win contributes to Gregg’s best ever season behind the wheel of a sprint car. At the start of the season his plans were to follow the Golden State Challenge Series but he found himself competing well in various venues including the Civil War Series, Silver Dollar Speedway and Placerville Speedway. Earlier in the year he scored his first ever California win at Marysville Raceway Park during a Civil War and just last Saturday night he finished an impressive second place behind Trulli at the half mile Calistoga Speedway.

“I was starting to think I was never going to win here at home, but tonight everything went our way,” said Gregg who credits the efforts of his crew for their season success. “My crew has really come together this year and I think they are the reason I’ve been doing so much better. They work hard at the track and at the shop. They all put late hours into this deal and it is paying off.”

In the Pro Stock division, Marek Bernert of Fair Oaks led every lap of the 15-lap feature event to post his third win of the season. Bernert entered the night with a single digit point lead over Mike Moran of Rancho Cordova and will look to continue his success in the next two weeks and clinch his first Pro Stock championship.

“We’ve got two weeks to go but that’s our plan,” said Bernert. “But anything can happen so we have to be ready to go every week. Tonight I had a good starting position to break away early and stay out of traffic.”
Bernert started the event in the fourth position and used an outside line to charge past David Brown of Sacramento and heat race winner Forryst Carnett of Placerville to take the lead. Once in front Bernert was challenged by Carnett for the final laps of the race and Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City who crossed the finish line in that order followed by Moran and Dennis Ahart of Cameron Park.

In the Pure Stock feature event, point leader Jason Englund of Citrus Heights won his fourth event of the season. Englund started on the outside of the front row and charged ahead of Rick Grunert of Woodland on the opening lap.

Once in front Englund was challenged distantly by Grunert who was fighting for second place for much of the race Mike McClure of Nevada City and Tom Grady Sr. of El Dorado. At the finish line Englund was followed by Grunert, McClure, Grady, Kevin Wirth of Garden Valley and Matt Tilford of Citrus Heights.
“Things went our way again tonight,” said Englund. “Hopefully they can go our way for two more weeks and the championship. I have to thank everyone that helps me do this, my sponsors and my family and all these crew guys everyweek. They work really hard to keep me going out here.”

Racing resumes this Saturday at Placerville Speedway with the second to last championship point race of the season. For additional information visit www.placervillespeedway.com.
