LIGHTNING SPRINT TITLE TO BE DECIDED AT LAST RACE!
(Torrance, CA, November 5, 2014) The curtain will come down on the California Lightning Sprint Car season this Friday, November 7th, at the middle night of the 19th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals Presented by All Coast Construction at Perris Auto Speedway. At the final race, the two most important awards in the club, the overall championship and the Rookie of the Year, will be decided. Spectator gates will open at 4:00 PM with racing at 6:45. The USAC National & CRA Sprint Cars and the PAS Senior Sprints will be part of the show.
Three driver are in the hunt for both of the prestigious titles. In the overall championship, it will come down to a fight between Lomita’s Bobby Michnowicz, Damon Arnett of San Diego and Fort Irwin’s Jeff Dyer. Michnowicz, who captured the title two years ago and who leads the series this year with six victories, heads into Saturday night’s final with a 15-point lead over Arnett and a 36-point advantage over Dyer. Of Michnowicz six wins this year, three of them have come at Perris. Dyer’s only win of the season also came at Perris in March.
Dyer led the point standings for most of the season, but luck has reared its ugly head at him over the past few races. That allowed Arnett, who had a season best 2nd at Perris on July 4th, to take the point lead from Dyer. Then Michnowicz quickly confiscated it from him with a late season charge to the top of the pile.
The battle for Rookie of the Year is even tighter than the battle for the overall championship. Teenager Corey Hoover of Corona holds a slender 2-point advantage over fellow teen Cori Andrews of Murrieta. Jeremy Queener of Torrance, who changed rides a few race ago, is third in the R.O.Y. chase and is 29-points behind leader Hoover.
Of the three rookie contenders, only Andrews has a win. That victory came on The PAS hybrid track at the “Salute to Indy” in May. Hoover has a pair of second place finishes on his plate. Queener’s best outing of 2014 was a second place finish on July 4th.
Northern California star Doug Nunes of Kingsburg, who won the last race in the series two weeks ago at Ventura, is the defending champ for the CLS portion of the Oval Nationals.
