After claiming his fourth win of the season at Marysville on September 20th, Ryan Bernal of Hollister, California has clinched his second straight championship. Driving Mike Phulps’ #56 Tri-L Mandarin Ranch / Core Power ART, Bernal has earned two Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, two heat race victories, one Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award, six top-10 finishes, and 54 feature laps led to his credit. Ryan will be looking for his series leading ninth feature triumph and the $1,500 payday at Petaluma.

Yorba Linda, California’s Matt Mitchell is second in the Western Classic point standings. On September 20th, the pilot of the #37 Campbell Bros. Storage / Pit Boss Maxim missed the action at Marysville Raceway Park. Entering Saturday’s event, the 2-time USAC/CRA “Salute to Indy” winner has one feature win, one heat race victory, one Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi-Main win, six top-10 finishes, and one feature lap led on the season. At press time, it is unknown if Matt will make the tow to the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds.

Nic Faas of Huntington Beach, California sits third in the championship point chase. Since earning his second win of the season at Chowchilla on August 9th, Faas has parted ways with the JFM team. Currently, the former USAC Western Midget Champion has two heat race victories, five top-10 finishes, and 47 feature laps led to his credit. As this writing goes to press, Faas has not announced if he has found a ride for Saturday’s race at Petaluma.

Visalia, California’s Richard Vander Weerd is fourth in the point standings. The driver of the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Works Maxim did not compete in the September 20th event at Marysville. To date, the 2011 USAC West Coast Champion has two heat race victories, one Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award, and four top-10 finishes in the campaign. Richard will have his sights on adding Petaluma to his win list and earning his first WCRS feature victory.

Jace Vander Weerd of Visalia, California is fifth in the championship points. Like his twin brother Richard, the pilot of the family owned #88 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Works Maxim skipped the race at Marysville Raceway Park. In WCRS action, the 2010 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year has five top-10 finishes on the season. Jace will be looking to add the first place trophy to his collection and claim the $1,500 winner’s share.
