CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINT CAR STANDINGS TIGHTEN HEADING INTO SATURDAY’S BAKERSFIELD RACE!

(Torrance, CA, September 24, 2014)   When the California Lightning Sprint Car Series arrives at the Bakersfield Speedway this Saturday night, September 27th, the race for the championship will reach a fever pitch as the top two in the standings, Jeff Dyer and Damon Arnett, are separated by a mere 8-points with only four races remaining on the 2014 calendar.  To make things even more exciting, Saturday will be the final round of the “North vs South Civil War Series” matching the CLS vs Northern California’s BCRA.  Spectator gates will open at 4:00 PM with racing at 6:00.  The Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks, American Stocks and Mini Dwarfs will also be on the program.

San Diego’s Arnett became the chief beneficiary of point leader Dyer and third place racer Bobby Michnowicz of Lomita’s misfortunes at the last race at Perris Auto Speedway on September 13th.  Michnowicz, who calls Lomita home, came into that race third in points and had closed dramatically on the lead duo in the standings over the past two months.  However, an electrical problem in his car saw drop out of the race before a lap could be completed.

On the restart after Michnowicz’ misfortune, Fort Irwin’s Dyer became involved in a multi-car tangle in the first turn that saw his throttle system damaged and he was done for the night.  That set the table for Arnett to seize the moment and take over the point lead, but when the race was restarted for the third time, fate bit him as well.  He put the black #24 into the lead at the start, but spun and did a 360 before continuing on in turn three on the first lap.  Arnett went from first to eighth in the spin and by the time the race was over, he only managed to claw his way back to sixth.  Instead of leading the standings going into Saturday’s race at Bakersfield, he still finds himself in second, but is only 8-points behind Dyer.  Michnowicz is third in the standings, but is 74-markers behind the leader.  Rookies Corey Hoover of Corona and Cori Andrews of Murrieta round out the top five.

Placentia’s Dan Hillberg won the Perris race ahead of Hoover and Guy Maresch of Anaheim Hills.  With the win, Hillberg became only the second driver with more than one main victory in the CLS in 2014 (Michnowicz has five).  Hillberg’s other win came at Bakersfield in April.  In the two other races staged at Bakersfield this year, Northern California star Dakota Albright and Michnowicz have the wins.

In the Civil War Series, the CLS duo of Michnowicz and Dyer lead the standings heading into the last of the three races.  The next three spots are occupied by BCRA drivers Bradley Dillard, Brian Corso and Albright.  Michnowicz and Albright have won the first two races in the series.

After Saturday’s race in Bakersfield, there will only be three races left on the 2014 schedule.  October 18th at the Ventura Raceway and the 6th and 7th of November at the 19th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals presented by All Coast Construction at Perris Auto Speedway.  The November 15th race at El Centro has been canceled due to another event on the Imperial County Fairgrounds.
