Austin McCarl – Another Successful Return!

(Bill W) August 21, 2014 – It had been almost a year since Austin McCarl’s #17A had been on the track at Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota.  The return was a success, as despite not having brakes, the Altoona, Iowa driver drove to a fourth place finish in last Sunday night’s feature. The night was all the more special as sponsor Ben Nothdurft of Bargain Barn Tires went into the Huset’s Speedway Hall of Fame.  Austin is planning a return to Huset’s this Sunday.

Things went well early in the night.  “Everything went pretty smoothly,” says Austin.  “We ended up timing in sixth quick, which was pretty good.  When I drove Lynton’s (Jeffrey) car (in May), we were ninth.  So we got a little better there.”

The brake problem surfaced in the heat.  “It was nice to be back in the car I built, the Maxim,” says Austin.  “We ended up losing the brakes in the heat race and ran fifth.  I just ran the bottom and tried to survive it.  I thought we may have a left front rotor bent or something, but that wasn’t it.”

Austin and the crew failed to discover the issue before the main event.  “We ran the whole feature without brakes,” he says.  “I probably would have been able to get another spot or two.  At the beginning, the bottom was good.  I got underneath Ian (Madsen), and missed the bottom terribly without the brakes.”

Despite the stout 410 field assembled, Austin was able to checker fourth behind his father, Terry, Mark Dobmeier and Dusty Zomer.  “I was forced to move up and run the cushion and do my best,” he says.  “It ended up all good.  We hadn’t raced for practically a year, so to come up fourth was good.  Ian hit the fence and had a tire go down late in the race, which definitely benefited me, but all in all it was a good night.”

The night was made more special by Nothdurft’s induction, and his father’s win.  “Ben Nothdurft from Ben’s Bargain Barn was inducted into the Huset’s Hall of Fame, so that was pretty special,” says Austin.  “I got to put that on the car.  Dusty ran third, and that’s another driver they help a lot, so it was pretty special.  It was a good weekend for the Nothdurft family and a good weekend for the McCarl family.  Hopefully, we can do it all again this weekend.”

Austin’s return was made possible by his sponsors.  “I’d like to welcome Sinplot Grower Solutions on board with us,” he says.  “Of course, I’d also like to thank Bargain Barn Tire Center, New Gulf Resources, Excel Therapy, Sweeter Construction, DeBerg Concrete, Rossie Feed & Grain and all of our partners.”

Once again, the Huset's Speedway "provisional" rule is screwing up history and record keeping.

Results for 8/17/14 shows #12 Lynton Jeffrey finishing in 4th place when in fact the actual car/driver on the track was #17A Austin McCarl.
