Haubstadt, IN | June 29, 2014 – The Tri-State Speedway was in top notch shape as a three division field of POWRi Midgets, POWRi Micros, and MSCS Sprint Cars took to the Haubstadt, Indiana ¼ mile. It was an action packed night full of close and intense racing as a field of 70 drivers from all around the country came to one of Indiana’s most prestigious dirt tracks.
As Mother Nature forced cancellation of POWRi events the night before at Fayette County Speedway in Brownstown, Illinois, the series crossed the state line and switched over to the “Hoosier State” for some action. Not only did rain strike on Friday night, but Tri-State was the one and only Sprint Car track racing in the state of Indiana on Saturday night, also due to rain.
A full breakdown of the night’s racing action along with full results can be found below.
POWRi MIDGETS!
Just one night after being forced to surrender POWRi races in Brownstown, Illinois, the series drove over to Indiana for the 21st event of a 41 race schedule. Coming into action at Tri-State Speedway, Zach Daum and Christopher Bell were tied atop the point standings for the lead. With Bell attending Ohio Speedweek the door for the points lead was wide open for reigning POWRi Midget champion of Daum.
A total of 24 POWRi Midgets would roll into the pit area of Tri-State Speedway last night, forcing a three heat, B-Main program. Andy Malpocker, Hud Cone, and Seth Motsinger all won the three thrilling heat races as Garrett Aitken claimed the B-Main victory.
Come feature time it was Riverside, California native Darren Hagen and Oakland City, Indiana resident of Hud Cone on the front row. The two top point getters would lead us to the green flag as Hagen began his quest for victory. Tyler Thomas quickly shot into second from his third place starting position and immediately put his Triple XXX-Esslinger to work while hunting down Hagen.
As Hagen would easily check out on the field, lap traffic would soon become a factor for the already two-time POWRi victor this season. The dominant Hagen would go on a blistering attack through lap traffic while slicing and dicing his Five-Six Inc., Shane Hmiel owned Beast-Esslinger in between each lap car.
A yellow on lap 17 for stopped Bethalto, Illinois native of Jacob Patton would put an end to the astonishing pace set by Hagen and his #56 machine. As the restart commenced all eyes were on the battle for second as Thomas and Seth Motsinger in his Ford powered BOSS Chassis #2 went to war. Just as the Salem, Indiana went to make a move on second place running Thomas, all things went south for the KBR driver. The young Motsinger would slide into a lap car of Ryan Chriswell while attempting to pass Thomas and come to a halt in turn four, ending a strong run by the talented driver.
The ensuing restart would once again see an intense and crazy battle for second break out. As fourth row starters of Dereck King and Zach Daum came charging to the front, Thomas would be forced into defense mode once again while guarding second. The three drivers would put on an incredible show while going three wide on the wide and high banked ¼ mile track.
Daum, driving his Toyota powered Eagle Chassis would pull off a daring move by splitting both King and Thomas as the Pocahontas, Illinois native stormed into second. The move by the defending POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series champion would come a bit too late as Hagen had already built up an impressive full straightaway lead.
Going unchallenged all race long and leading all 30 laps at the Haubstadt, Indiana ¼ mile, Darren Hagen would dominate the field to claim his 10th career POWRi National Midget Series feature and third win of the season. The victory would create the second winner of the Ford Eco-Boost Challenge as Christopher Bell had claimed two previous wins at Bloomington and Brownstown in May.
Zach Daum would bring home his #5D machine in second from seventh and Dereck King rounded out the podium with an eight to third run. Kevin Thomas Jr. capped off a powerful 14th to fourth run with his BOSS-Ford machine and Collinsville, Oklahoma native Tyler Thomas closed out the top five. Garrett Aitken earned hard charger honors with a 17th to sixth run, Chet Gehrke ran seventh, Jake Blackhurst eighth, Austin Brown ninth, and Hud Cone tenth.
The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series will return to action this weekend as they co-sanction the “Pepsi Nationals” at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin along with the USAC Honda National Midget Series on Saturday and Sunday, July 5th and 6th.

MSCS SPRINT CARS!
As Tri-State Speedway commenced with the only program in the state on Saturday night that included Non-Wing Sprint Cars, the Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series reeled in a field of 23 drivers to compete at the Haubstadt, Indiana track. Pulling in such big names like Ballou, Stockon, Short, Cummings, Schuerenberg, Hagen, Sterrett, Cockrum, and Farney was a promise to be a great show.
Chase Stockon, Hunter Schuerenberg, and Robert Ballou would take victory in the three MSCS heat races while Hud Cone picked up the B-Main win. Donny Brackett, Aaron Farney, and Lee Dakus also transferred from the semi while James Lyerla took a provisional to complete the 21-car, 25-lap feature field.
Right from the drop of the green flag Ballou rocketed his #12 machine past Stockon and stormed into the race lead. Within five laps the Rocklin, California native had built up a phenomenal full straightaway lead over Stockon and the rest of the field.
A red flag for Shane Cockrum on lap five and a yellow for Aaron Farney on lap seven would be the only stoppages of the race. As Ballou continually built up his strong advantage, the battle for second turned into a three way war. Stockon would be up on the wall pounding down the cushion, Brady Short would be powering his #11P through the middle, and three-time MSCS champion Kyle Cummins was rolling the bottom as all three drivers would battle for almost five laps, three wide for second place.
Short eventually was able to power past both of the frontrunners as he climbed into second behind Ballou. Cummins would work his #3C machine into third as Stockon slipped back into fourth. As the laps continued to tick off Ballou added to his large lead as he sliced and diced his way through lap traffic.
The rest of the 25-lap feature would see the #12 continue its domination of the thrilling ¼ mile as Robert Ballou claimed his 10th career MSCS Sprint Car feature win and his second of the season at Tri-State. After going on a grueling, tough seven year drought at the Haubstadt, Indiana track, Ballou has now claimed back to back wins at the “Home of the Midwest Sprint Car Series.”
Brady Short claimed a strong second place finish from third and Kyle Cummins charged from sixth to round out the podium in third. Chase Stockon, just a week after destroying his #32 DRC Chassis at Angell Park brought a new DRC to Haubstadt and took home an impressive fourth and Hunter Schuerenberg rounded out the top five. Bradley Sterrett ran sixth, Carson short seventh, Brian Karraker eighth, Jeff Bland Jr. ninth, and Hud Cone tenth. James Lyerla took hard charger honors with a 21st to 13th run.

POWRi MICROS!
Also reeling in a count of 23 cars last night was the POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series. The little brother to National Midget Series saw another three heat race program as talented drivers like Benson, Wirth, Openshaw, Andruksevitch, Camp, and King all filled into the pits of the wicked fast Indiana ¼ mile.
Kyle Schuett, Chad Elliott, and Nathan Benson all took heat race honors as the 23-car feature field was set. Right from the drop of the green flag Benson immediately took his Suzuki powered Pace Chassis into the race lead. Outside pole sitter and Riverton, Illinois native Jason Harms slipped back into second behind the reigning POWRi Micro champion.
As both Benson and Harms walked away from the field, the battle for third started to heat up with almost four cars in contention for the position. Zac Taylor in his #46 Runaway Chassis was put up to the task of defending his podium spot from the likes of Joey Wirth, Chris Openshaw, and three-time POWRi champion Dereck King.
Benson would soon enter lap traffic, but the Concordia, Missouri native refused to let the back markers fade him on his pursuit to another win. The #2B would easily hold on to the top spot as Nathan Benson earned his ninth career POWRi victory and second win of the 2014 season.
Jason Harms claimed second position, Zac Taylor held on to third, Joey Wirth ran fourth, and Chris Openshaw rounded out the top five. Dereck King charged from 14th to sixth, Austin Stewart ran seventh, Kyle Schuett eighth, Jeremy Camp ninth, and Aaron Andruskevitch tenth.
