THREE DRIVERS BATTLE FOR CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINT CAR ROOKIE OF THE YEAR HONORS!
(Torrance, CA, June 10, 2014) To say the California Lightning Sprint Car Series has been graced by a great crop of rookies in the 2014 season is a massive understatement. Three rookies, Corey Hoover, Cori Andrews and Jeremey Queener, are locked into a tight battle for the Rookie of the Year award and they will next square off on the track this Saturday night, June 14th, at the series home track, Perris Auto Speedway. The USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, and PAS Senior & Young Gun Sprints will also be appearing on the quadruple header program. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM and the first race will be at 7:00.
The CLS season reaches the hallway point Saturday. Heading into the race, the first year trio is separated by a mere 61-points in the standings. Hoover, a 15-year-old from Corona leads the way followed by Andrews, a 15-year-old from Murrieta, and Queener, a 28-year-old from Torrance. Hoover is 43-points ahead of Andrews and Queener trails Andrews by 18-points/
Andrews has the only win of the three and that came at the last race at The PAS when she bested Hoover by over a full straightaway. Hoover has the most top five finishes with four. All four of those came within the last five races and include two second place finishes. Queener has a pair of top fives including a second place finish at Bakersfield. Queener also missed a Perris main event when he had mechanical issues that cost him valuable points.
In the overall CLS championship standings, Hoover is ranked fourth, with Andrews seventh and Queener eighth.
Fort Irwin’s Jeff Dyer took over the lead in the championship standings at Perris three weeks ago. The United States Army Sargeant holds a 36-point advantage over San Diego’s Damon Arnett heading into Saturday’s race. Defending champion Steve Limon of Corona is third, but recently sold his car and plans on moving up to the USAC/CRA or the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series. Hoover is fourth overall with Bobby Michnowicz of Lomita, who leads the series with three wins, fifth/
Saturday’s race will only be the fourth in the first nine races of 2014 at The PAS. However, five of the final eight races will take place at the famous Riverside County racing facility. Saturday’s race will be on the hybrid track which uses turns one and two on the inner quarter-mile oval and turns three and four of the half-mile.
