I heard a very interesting story today about what was going on in the pits at the last sprint car race ever at Ascot Park in 1990. The story from a person in the pits was a lot of unusual things were being done to the engines, including running on nitros. The penalty at the time, if caught, was a 1-race suspension at the next race, but, for many of the racers, there would be no next race for them as this was in their mind the end of the road, so they didn't care. My understanding the nitros deal was being done by many teams. No names in the story but an interesting insight into a little bit of history.

I think that is more rumor or legend than fact. I was a crew member on a team that ran that event, and all the other events of that period, and most likely would have been among the guilty. I'm pretty sure I would have been aware if that were true. I do believe we drank more beer that night....but beyond that, I don't think there was wholesale disregard for the rules.

I was the crew chief on the car that finished second in that race and i know we didn't run nitro or an over sized motor, our car was just as legal as it had been all year.
Not going to say that nobody had run nitro, but if they did they didn't win or run in the front,so what good did it do them.
