PRESS RELEASE, PLACERVILLE SPEEDWAY, PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, SATURDAYM AUGUST 4, 2007 MEDIA CONTACT: BILL SULLIVAN
The kid does it; Kyle Larson becomes youngest winner ever at Placerville Speedway
15-year-old Elk Grove sensation wins high caliber Civil War feature in just his 10th event
by Bill Sullivan
PLACERVILLE, CA – History was made at Placerville Speedway Saturday night. Before a near sold out crowd, 15-year-old Kyle Larson of Elk Grove became the youngest driver to ever win a feature event at the foothill speedway. To top it off, the accomplishment didn’t come easy for Larson and his trip to victory lane was one of the most exciting races in recent memory.
“This is awesome,” we the first words from Larson, after he climbed from his Parker Stores/Vertullo Racing owned #83v on the front stretch of the speedway and was surrounded by members of his family, fellow drivers and many spectators that pushed their way past security officers and flooded victory lane in celebration. Saturday’s event was just Larson’s 10th start in the Civil War series.
Larson started the feature event in the fifth position behind Marc Mackay of Shingle Springs, Mason Moore of Princeton, Placerville’s Jimmy Trulli and Stephen Allard of Chico. The first pair of green flags were followed by caution flags. The first pause was a red flag when point leader Andy Forsberg of Auburn rolled over on his side in turn three after a collision in traffic. After a three car collision in turn two involving Billy Wallace, Brad Bumgarner and Trulli, the third attempt at the official start was followed by 30-laps of the most exciting racing by two of today’s youngest open wheel stars.
Second place starter Mason Moore of Princeton drove from his outside front row starting position to immediately take the lead from pole sitter Marc Mackay. Once in front, Moore muscled his family owned Moore Insurance/Blue Shield of California #22 to a lead several car lengths over Mackay. Much like Larson, Moore is also a graduate of the outlaw karting ranks this season. The well spoken 16-year-old is one of Larson’s good friends and the duo spent many of their younger years together racing side by side in the smaller cars.
For the first 19-laps of the event, Moore maintained a moderate lead over Mackay who felt the pressures of Larson since the opening lap. Just prior to completion of the 20th lap, Larson brought the capacity crowd to it’s feet when he overtook Mackay for second place and set his sights on his friendly rival, Moore, for the lead. Shortly after Larson moved into second place, three time Marysville champion Colby Wiesz of Colfax advanced into the third spot to begin chasing the two drivers that are less than half his age.
With Wiesz running the low line consistently, Larson was forced to drive up on the risky high side of the track for the final half of Saturday’s race. With the feat, Larson proved to the critics that say Placerville is a one lane track to be very mistaken. Once up on the top side of the track Larson began to reel in Moore for the lead, lap after lap and restart after restart.
On lap 26, the spectators rose to their feet as Larson went to the risky high side of of turn four and pulled beside Moore to make the pass that put him the lead and eventually become the youngest to do so in the 42 years of operation at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds. For the final laps Moore remained within striking distance of Larson, awaiting the slightest error which never took place. Wiesz pulled to the inside of Moore on several occasion to bid for the second position with little success. At the finish line it was Larson with the win, followed by Moore, Wiesz, Mackay and Dan Menne of Fort Jones.
With his victory, Larson not only becomes the youngest driver to win at Placerville Speedway. He also is the youngest to ever wuin a feature event in the Civil War Series and joins Alissa Geving of Penngrove in the category of youngest winning drivers in California. Just two weeks ago, Geving won her first feature event at Petaluma Speedway. Saturday night, Geving was one of the first drivers to greet Larson when he climbed from the car and was greeted by more than a thousand screaming fans.
“Mason and I have raced together for a long time in the karts,” said Larson, who was greeted by third place finishers Wiesz as well as defending track champion Greg DeCaires who ran all the way from the pit area to shake his hand. Recently retired two time Civil War champion David Robinson Jr. even surfaced on the track to show his support.
“He was running a good race and I wasn’t sure I was going to catch him. When I had to go up high to stay ahead of Colby the car worked really well up there so I stayed up there. This is really great, I want to do the best I can in this sport because my goal is to eventually get to NASCAR.”
For the past several years, car owners David and Debbie Vertullo have had their share of success with young talented drivers in their Elk Grove based sprint car. Names such as Brad Sweet, Chuck Gurney and Mike Henry have all driven to victory with the team. This year, Vertullo gave Larson the opportunity to drive a full size sprint car and its has paid off for both parties.
“He’s a great kid and I am glad to have him in the car,” said Vertullo. Unfortunately I know I don’t have him for very long but I’m sure he’s going to go places.”
Amidst the victory lane pandemonium Saturday night war Moore, who was just as excited for Larson’s success as if he had one the feature event. The driver known as “Primetime” to his counterparts was eager to complete his front stretch interview so he could give Larson a respectful handshake.
“I’m really happy for Kyle tonight, he did a great job,” said Moore. “We raced some really clean laps out here tonight. When I saw him pulled to the outside of me in the fourth turn I was pretty surprised. I’ve heard not many people can do that here but he’s been running well up here all year long and he figured it out. This is our best finish so far and I’m really happy to be here with Kyle and Colby tonight.”
For Wiesz, the third place finish assured his second place status in the point standings on Saturday. The veteran driver chose not to talk about his night, but gave all the credit to Larson for his win.
“These guys are getting younger every year,” said Wiesz. “Younger and faster. The kid has an incredible amount of talent behind the wheel of a race car. I had a great view of it all tonight and both Kyle and Mason deseve credit for a great race out here. I can’t complain about a third place tonight that’s for sure.”
Next Saturday the Civil War returns to the famed Calistoga Speedway for the annual “Napa Valley Challenge.” Placerville Speedway will host a totally wingless event including the BCRA Midgets, Midget Lites, Wingless Sprints, Pro Stocks and Pure Stocks.

PHOENIX MODIFIED DRIVER WINS MARATHON Date: 08/04/2007 - Orange Show Speedway - San Bernardino, CA
SAN BERNARDINO – Billy Johanneck overcame 21 other starters and 14 caution flags to win a marathon Lucas Oil ASA Modified Series main event Saturday night at Orange Show Speedway.
Johanneck’s victory in a 75-lap race that took well over an hour to run made it three different winners in the three races the traveling series has run on the quarter-mile oval at the National Orange Show Events Center. Dean Kuhn won the first race June 9 and Danny Gay took the second July 21.
Johanneck, who had finished third and fourth in the two previous races here, started on the outside of the front row and inherited the lead when John Tyczki was forced to leave the track with a flat tire after spinning in oil dropped on the track when Joe Bubbico’s engine blew on lap 12.
That mishap brought out the fifth yellow caution flag of the night. There would be nine more, all while Johanneck was leading and being dogged by points leader Gay. But with the caution flags disrupting any semblance of rhythm in the race (32 laps was the longest green flag stretch) Johanneck was able to withstand all of Gay’s challenges and win by about two car lengths.
Earlier, Ramona’s John Manke got his second win in three races by capturing the 50-lap Hype Manufacturing Super Late Models main event with the night’s third wire-to-wire performance.
Manke, the 2005 class champion, started his Litehouse Dressings Chevrolet on the outside of the front row in the 16-car field, but outdueled pole-sitter and defending champion Glen Cummings for the lead exiting Turn 4 on the opening lap and never was headed after that.
Fast qualifier Linny White, of Fontana, did his best to foil Manke. White pulled to the inside of the leader coming off Turn 4 with two laps to go, but had to slow momentarily to regain control after the two bumped in Turn 1 and couldn’t make another attempt to pass.
The ASA Pro 4, Aflac Factory Fours and Stock Cars USA main events played out in identical fashion, with the pole-sitter leading all the way and winning comfortably.
Eddie Secord did it in the 30-lap Pro 4 feature, winning a first-lap duel with points leader Rex Lockwood, then slowly pulling away to claim his seventh win in nine races. That came just after Martin Huizenga drove his Nissan pickup to an easy win in the Factory Fours 30-lap main. Then Peter Bryk of Yucaipa capped the evening by keeping his Chevrolet in front from the start to the finish of the 25-lap main for the Stock Cars USA class.
It was the first main event win for Huizenga, 46, a contractor from Hemet, and for Bryk.

PETTIT, FENSLER EMERGE VICTORIOUS AT ALTAMONT MOTORSPORTS PARK Date: August 4, 2007
TRACY, California - A large turnout of stock car racing fans had their fill of entertainment Saturday night at Altamont Motorsports Park as two of the premier west coast Late Model touring series visited the track for two 100 lap shootouts sponsored by Mike Marchant's Mid Valley Iron and Metals.
Highlighting Saturday night's show was a visit from the SRL Wild West Late Model Shootout series, racing in their fifth event of the 2007 season and only appearance at Altamont Motorsports Park this year.
The series lived up to its namesake, coming down to a two lap shootout to determine the victor of the 100 lap event.
In the end, Jim Pettit II became the series first repeat winner of 2007, holding on to the number one position on the restart and crossing the stripe in first place.
"I was going to bide my time and ride for about 60 laps but things started getting real free on us." said Pettit in victory lane.
"We knew as soon as a yellow came out we were going to come in and make adjustments to the chassis." said Pettit.
Pettit, the 2004 and 2005 Southwest Series champion, passed Aztec, NM's Porter Smith on lap 68 and held on for the remaining 32 laps of the event. Smith, the 2005 Aztec Speedway Track Champion, passed the 7 of Rick Ruzbarsky to take the lead on lap 23. Both Ruzbarsky and Smith got around pole sitter Dave Byrd the previous lap. Smith led 45 laps until being passed by Pettit on lap 68.
"The tires went away quick in this race," said Smith. "In the early part of this race are car was just awesome."
Dave Byrd, the 2006 Western Late Model Champion at Altamont Motorsports Park, finished the race in the fourth position.
Greg Voight finished one behind Smith in third place. Tracy Bolin rounded out the top five.
The Eldorado Hotel Casino Westcar Series brought 22 fast cars to the 1/2-mile oval competing in the sixth of eight Westcar events this season. The #35 of Jason Fensler dominated the race, taking the lead on lap 10 and holding onto it for the victory. Several late cautions put Fensler's restart skills to the test but the native of Elk Grove, Calif was able to get on the gas quickly to preserve his #1 position.
"Early in the race we just didn't have anything on the top so we had to go to the bottom and fall back in line and just start picking them off." said Fensler.
"Once we got up front we kind of cruised a little bit," said Fensler. "The car got little bit tight after yellows but in long runs the car was awesome."
Fensler is no stranger to victory lane, winning the SRL Championship in 2005. The win on Saturday night was Fensler's first Westcar victory this season.
Tight racing for positions two through five had the fans on their feet in the last 15 laps of the race until contact between Doff Cooksey and Greg Potts took Cooksey out of the event on lap 94. The #56 of Bobby Butler, who was also in the mix, faded away after the final restart on lap 94.
When the dust settled fans saw Jared Buddow, Greg Potts, Randy Hedrick and Michael Wendt round out the top five. Rookie driver, Jared Buddow, was the Eldorado Hotel Casino Westcar Series points leader coming into the event.
Altamont Motorsports Park's 2006 Champion and current SRL points leader Dave Byrd was not a factor in the race. After qualifying second fastest and moving to the second position after a six car inversion, Byrd eventually succumbed to tire problems on lap 36. Top qualifier, Craig Swim, also had a strong run cut short by tire problems.
Altamont Motorsports Park's current NASCAR Whelen All-American Western Late Model points leader, Ryan Philpott, was not at the track on Saturday night.
In NASCAR Whelen All-American American Limited Stock Car action Stockton, Calif's Chad Holman secured his fourth victory of the season. Holman, Stockton 99's 2006 ALSC Champion, has dominated the last five races at Altamont Motorsports Park, winning four of the last five.
Coming across the stripe in positions two and three of the 30 lap event were Hayward Chevrolet teammates Jim Dulla and Tim Rappa.
Formula-4 driver Jake Morgenstern took the checkers in the early 10 lap Formula-4 race on the road course holding off strong pressure from the #16 of Rodney Lopez. Doug Foreman took the checkers in the night cap.
On Sunday, August 5th, the popular West Coast Enduro's will hit the road course for a 200 lap event. The price is just $100 for a car and driver to enter the event.
Next weekend the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series returns in full force with the Western Late Models, Grand American Modifieds and ALSCs all scheduled to compete. NCMA sprint cars are also on tap for next Saturday's schedule.
Altamont Motorsports Park is located between Livermore and Tracy, Calif., within an hour's drive from most points in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as the Central Valley.

Greg DeCaires Wins 410 Sprint Main at Chico by Troy Hennig
CHICO, CA (8-3-07) - It had been a while since Elk Grove driver Greg DeCaires had visited victory lane at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. “I can't remember the last time I was standing here,” said DeCaires. The veteran driver who won a track championship at Chico in 1990 was very complementary of his team and the fans that show up every Friday night.
“I want to say thanks to the the whole #24 NMI team and the fans that make the long commute up here to watch us race,” said DeCaires. “This is going to be a fun week of work because my car owner is also my boss.”
Also winning on the night was Tyler Wolf of Redding. Wolf led every lap to win the wingless sprint main event. “I knew Sparky was coming,” said Wolf referring to veteran driver Sparky Howard. “But I just kept my line and it all worked out in the end.” It was his first career win at Chico.
“The track was bad fast tonight, that was the hardest and fastest I ever drove around Chico,” said Sohnrey. A total of 64 cars competed during the Feather Falls Casino Friday night championship series race. The night was sponsored by Miller Glass of Chico. Also, Pullins Cyclery supplied a free BMX bicycle to one lucky fan. The winner was in town visiting relatives. The child lives in New York and was already wondering how to get the bike back to his hometown.
After two failed attempts to start the 410 sprint main event things finally got up and running with Matt Shelton as the leader. Shelton, a local product, took the lead over Princeton driver Mason Moore. Moore is in his rookie season and already has shown the ability to run with the top cars at Chico. A series of cautions slowed the racing on lap four when Sean Becker spun in turn two and on lap five and six when Chris Masters was involved with two separate accidents. On the seventh lap it was DeCaires who passed Moore and was closing in on Shelton. It was only a matter of time before DeCaires grabbed the lead. He pass Shelton on lap 11 and never looked back. Shelton, to his credit, hung in with DeCaires and proved to be a worthy challenger for the lead. On lap 13 championship point leader Stephen Allard came to a stop in turn two. The problem was terminal and he exited to the trailer. Racing continued until lap 23 when Evan Suggs brought out the yellow. Suggs had raced his way into third and was battling Shelton for second when he entered turn one too high and slid off the track. It was a tough break for Suggs who made the long tow from Scotts Valley to race with the Friday night crowd in Chico. The final two laps were no contest for DeCaires as he raced to his first 410 winged sprint car win of 2007. Shelton had a career best second place finish. Mason Moore tied his career best finish of third.
Moore and his Mike Clarke prepared #22 looks to finish the season on a high note. It was nice to see Chico's Brett Miller finish in the fourth spot. Miller's luck of late has not been good. He even raced for almost one month on a 360 motor just to keep competing. Miller and team had to feel good about the top five finish. Rounding out the top five was Chico's Robbie Whitchurch. Another solid run for Whitchurch and company. Tyler Wolf utilized his pole position start by taking the early lead of the 20-lap wingless sprint main event. Wolf led Scott Hall and Charlie Mars into the first lap. Lap six brought out the first caution when Billy Wallace spun and collected Brett Youngman and Tony Boscacci. On the restart it was Marrs moving around Hall for second. Also following Marrs was Sparky Howard. Howard was now in third and Hall fell to fourth. On lap nine it was Howard's turn to grab the second spot away from Marrs. Drivers moving through the field included Matt Streeter and Jimmy Pettit. Streeter wound up finishing third while Pettit had another top five run and finished fifth. Brandon Davis, championship point leader, made contact with another driver late in the race and retired to the infield. On the race track he left behind what looked to be the inside of the rear end that fell out of the car. The caution was needed to remove the debris. The final five laps were fast and furious as Wolf and Howard went at it for the lead. Howard closed but was never able to make the pass happen. Wolf crossed the line with a car length advantage to get the win.
The best race of the night involved two dirt modified aces. Mike Sohnrey and Richard Papenhausen swapped the lead a few times and thrilled the crowd with their close racing. Sohnrey started the race as the leader but it was Papenhausen who took the lead away on lap five. On lap seven Chris Compton stopped off of turn two to bring out the caution. The restart proved to be the moment of truth for Papenhausen. On lap nine the two were side by side racing for the lead. For the next three circuits both cars swapped the lead. In lap 12, Sohnrey used the low line to pass Papenhausen for the lead. Sohnrey led the final three laps to get the win. Papenhausen limped across the line in second and looked to have a flat tire. Darin Ruley finished in the third spot. Joe Flower came home in the fourth spot. Janet King made a rare appearance and finished fifth.
Cody Myers won the 10-lap wingless B main. Taylor Simas, Justin Funkhouser and Cody Smith all transferred. Not transferring was Jay Youngman who finished fifth. Youngman came into the night second in points.
Trevor Green dominated the 12-lap B main. Sean Becker finished in the second spot.
Fast Eddy Lewis won the first heat race for the 410 sprints. Colby Weisz debuted a new paint job and won heat two. Orland driver Zack Mason won the third heat race. The win was number five for the season during heat race action for Mason.
Papenhausen won the lone heat race for the modifieds.
Stephen Allard turned the quickest lap in qualifying. His lap time was 13.042.

KRUSEMAN FIRST IN MSCS PADUCAH VISIT By Eldon Butcher
Paducah, KY - August 3. Cory Kruseman of Ventura, California, drove to victory Friday night in the 30 lap feature held at Paducah International Raceway for the Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series. Kruseman was behind the wheel of the Kruseman Motorsports Bullet sponsored by Sanders. It was the first victory for Kruseman in Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series competition and the first visit by the sanctioning group to the Paducah facility.
The veteran campaigner left his calling card with a heat race victory and then collected the $2,000 feature payoff to complete a perfect evening. Kruseman started in the second row of the 20 car field and moved to the front in just 4 laps. A number of drivers assumed the role of challenger including Hunter Schuerenberg, Hud Cone, Kyle Wissmiller, and Mat Neely. Schuerenberg led 2 laps before falling prey to Kruseman's forward drive. Cone was the next to occupy the role of the challenger. Meanwhile Kruseman moved higher and higher on the prime real estate of the fast 3/8's mile high banks until he was just inches off the walls in the corners.
Hud Cone's efforts came to an abrupt halt with a hard flip that took his car over the retaining wall in turn two where it landed on all four wheels. On the restart Kyle Wissmiller took the number two spot. The race for second came into Mat Neely's grasp on lap eighteen of the 30 laps scheduled. Neely was always in range choosing a groove at the bottom of a three groove race track.
Hunter Schuerenberg, Kyle Wissmiller, and Mitch Wissmiller formed the remainder of an impressive and competitive top five. The top ten included Brady Bacon, Kyle Cummins, Geoff Dodge, Brent Mellenberndt, and Alex Shanks. Kyle Cummins was the MSCS-Keizer Hard Charger of the Race Award. Chris Gentry picked up the Wilwood Tuff Brakes Award and was one of the drivers who made the middle groove work around the track. Heat races for the 33 entries were won by Hud Cone, Cory Kruseman, Hunter Schuerenberg, and Mitch Wissmiller. Of the 4 heats Wissmiller's was the only runaway. Wissmiller's runs during the night moved him into second place in the season's MSCS points standings. Arin McIntosh of Mitchell, IN, won the B-Main. She is currently the only lady driving in the MSCS ranks. Kyle Thomas finished second but damage incurred to the machine prevented him from starting the A-Main.
The B-Main was red flagged at the very outset due to a serious accident in turns one and two. Two drivers were injured. As Chad Boespflug's car was flipping in turn one, the car of Daron Clayton continued crashing along and into the outside retaining wall before soaring over the concrete and out of view. Both drivers were taken to the hospital. Clayton was released later that evening and Boespflug was transferred to another medical facility for further evaluation and treatment. Two other MSCS regulars damaged their equipment extensively in separate flips during heat race competition. Ryan Brewer flipped in the first heat and D.J. Ott rode out a flip in the second heat. Both accidents happened in what became a troublesome first corner during the night's racing activity.

SCHUERENBERG BLITZES HOOSIER SPRINT NATIONALS By Eldon Butcher
Haubstadt, IN - August 4, 2007. Hunter Schuerenberg of Sikeston, MO, won the third annual installment of the Hoosier Sprint Nationals at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, IN. The 50 lap event paying $10,000 to win and sanctioned by the Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series drew 42 non-wing sprint car teams. Schuerenberg drives for the Truckers 24 Hr. Race Team owned by Roger & Barb Tapy with Jim Whiteside serving as the crew chief. In post race comments he thanked them and the fans. "Thank you all for cheering me on!" He had already saluted the crowd with two victory doughnuts in turn four after a race designed to create fan appeal. Other sponsors include Minors Harley Davidson, Napa, Jockish Flowers, and Indy Race Parts.
Schuerenberg started 17th in the Competition Welding Chassis powered by a FOXCO engine. That starting spot was earned with a second place finish in the 12 lap B Main. The added distance of the race worked to his advantage as he began working through the 21 car field which included some of the best drivers from 8 states.
Schuerenberg was seventh at lap 25 having already advanced 10 spots. At the 30 lap mark he was fifth. And he was already up to second and the event's Hard Charger at the 40 lap mark. Fans watched an overwhelming all out ground attack. A blitz was shaping up and 100 % Sure-n' Berg had his sights trained ahead. Along the way and in those final laps circumstances created even more opportunities that would change the direction the race was taking. The field for the feature was hurried to the starting grid and pushed off with wet weather approaching. At the green flag of starter Mo Will, pole sitter Danny Holtsclaw shot into the lead. He stayed there for most of 9 laps and through the first red flag brought out as Kevin Thomas Jr. flipped end for end on the backstretch. Holtsclaw took on the role of the crowd favorite with a determined effort at the outset using an opportunity based on a lucky fan's pill draw to invert the established line-up continuing the Hoosier Nationals tradition. On lap ten Jon Stanbrough found the lead and once he was ahead began to pull away. The race developing was then for second. Stanbrough was fast! Mat Neely took second but the spot was Shane Cottle's 7 laps later. Stanbrough's engine compartment erupted in smoke on lap 32 and his car came to a stop in turn two changing the entire complexion of the race. Shane Cottle led the restart to the green and continued to protect the lead until the one final restart on lap 43. It was then that Cottle's car dug in momentarily in turn one and Schuerenberg sailed by. This final opportunity was all that the seventeen year old 2006 National Non-Wing Sprint Car Rookie of the Year needed.
Cottle finished second to collect the $5,000 runner-up's share of the purse. Mat Neely was third followed by Cory Kruseman and Chris Urish. Brent Beauchamp, Hud Cone, Danny Holtsclaw, Chris Gentry, and Kyle Cummins rounded out the top ten Only eleven drivers finished the event. Attrition or accidents cut the field by almost half. Alex Shanks received the Wilwood Tuff Brakes Award! Shanks finished despite some flames that flared up. The five heat race winners were Holtsclaw, Stanbrough, Gaines, Briscoe, and Short. Chris Babcock won the C Main to lead 5 drivers into the B-Main which produced a 20 car B-Main won by Hud Cone. Cone and crew had worked all the previous night to repair his car.

Marysville Raceway Park Press Release 8.5.07 For immediate release By Bob Burbach Richards wins a thriller Olschowka and Luster also score Marysville- Wingless Warrior, Chico’s Tony Richards triumphed in what was arguably the best feature race of the season at Paul and Kathy Hawes’ Marysville Raceway Park. Hard charging Robert Luster repeated in the KKCY Mini Stock class and Jeff Olschowka added to his long list of feature event victories in the KKCY Stock Car class. The KKCY Stock Cars presented their feature event first. 4th starting Olschowka used a brilliant maneuver through the first set of turns to lead coming onto the backstretch on lap 1. Olschowka would not be headed after that. Fellow front row starter Heather Bartlett was in the mix early on and was dicing with Marysville’s Ryan McDaniel. Heather Bartlett and McDaniel found each other in turn 3 of lap 4. Bartlett got into McDaniel sending him spinning. Bartlett was sent to the rear of the pack for the incident. Yuba City’s Jerry Bartlett and point leader Phillip Shelby then settled into a sweet battle that would decide the runner up spot in the race. The duel became a walk for Bartlett as Shelby seemed almost content with 3rd, keeping Bartlett in his sights. Meanwhile Heather Bartlett was on the march from the back. She sliced through the field with abandon and remarkably found 4th in the final results. Olschowka was so far ahead by the time Jerry Bartlett cleared Shelby that only a yellow flag could make the difference, and that never came. Bartlett followed Olschowka to the line with Shelby and Heather Bartlett in tow. Olschowka won the dash with Shelby and Guy Bean taking well deserved heat race wins. 103-degree temperatures and a stiff south wind did not adversely affect track conditions as promoter Hawes brought the hooked up surface in nearly perfectly. By feature time it was a 2-groove track that would produce a stirring sprint car feature event. Richards started on the pole of the Wingless Sprint Car feature and immediately brushed up against fellow front row starter Yuba City’s Mark Hill. Hill hammered the wall, got some air time and saved the white #8, but dropped to 10th on the initial lap. The race would be furious for the top spot, as the talented field of racers would run green until lap 18 of the 20 scheduled. 5th starter Terry Shank of Santa Rosa clawed his way into second eclipsing point leader Pat Russum, for 2nd, with a daring outside move at ½ way. Then the real dicing took place as leader Richards, Russum, Marysville’s Jeremy Hawes and Shank maneuvered side by side through traffic. It was simply…a thriller. On more than one occasion the trio bumped wheels and, from time to time, bounced into the air. On each occasion the drivers saved their cars and motored on. Shank finally made good a pass for the lead after poking his nose ahead of Richards now, and again. The video clearly shows Shank and Richards creating tire smoke as the pair rubbed wheels while racing side by side. Russum slipped by Richards a couple of laps later as Richards had some trouble with lapped traffic. The racing behind the lead trio was as exciting as the lead trio itself and it was hard to know where to look. Steve Stein had made it to 5th and was having a great duel with Hawes who was now 4th. With 4 to go, leader Shank encountered heavy lapped traffic and had trouble getting by a quick running Jimmy Steward. 2nd running Russum pounced into the lead as Shank tried high in turn 4 but his opening past Steward closed. Richards slipped by as Shank fought his way past Steward, then shadowed Richards as the pair raced into the 19th circuit. Shank tried a bold outside move in turn one on Richards to regain 2nd. Shank ran over Richards’ right rear and started a startling series of end over end flips that hushed the onlookers and quieted the motors in this exceptional event. To everyone’s relief, Shank popped out of the top of his battered racer with a roar of approval from the appreciative crowd. Richards retained the lead when scorers reverted to the last scored lap. The final 2 laps produced a daring move on the last lap as Russum tried to get by leader Richards in turn 3. Russum slid high and Richards took the checkers with Sacramento’s John Anderson and Stein in tow. Russum fell back into 4th with Hawes a fine 5th. Anderson’s outstanding run to 2nd was virtually unnoticed in the frenzy that was going on at the front. Anderson started 9th and did the best passing job of the event. Hill recovered to finish 8th after his 1st lap problems. Richards, Hill and Russum won the heats and Russum got the cash in the Dash for Cash. The KKCY Country 103 Cup Mini Stocks were next. Damian Merritt and Robert Luster shared the front row with Merritt jumping to an early lead. A series of incidental yellow flags slowed the pace of this race to a significant degree. Once rolling it was a good one, Merritt ran away with the early laps until a flat right front tire ended his hopes of victory. Jamey Ollar found 2nd ahead of Luster during the 1st ½ of the race and point leader Lisa Shelby was a strong 4th. Ollar seemed invincible once Merritt was out of the picture. Then the race took an exciting turn. Ollar had big trouble with lapped traffic and Luster and Shelby began to reel him in. In the ensuing dice Shelby popped out of the mix and into the lead with a slick move in traffic. She was hammered by a lapped car 1 lap later and Luster took over as the leader. Luster had clear sailing from there to the checkers to pick up his 2nd consecutive feature flag. But, there is one more spectacular story to tell. Yuba City’s Blane Baker started dead last in the feature and had the best passing job OF THE SEASON. Baker came flying through into 2nd at the checkers. Baker won the Dash for Cash earlier in the evening. Shelby, Ollar and feature winner Luster took the heat race victories. The Extreme Bombers brought down the curtain with some wild car crunching action. Judging from the crowd’s reaction, a good time was had by all. The “Wingless Warriors” Wingless Sprint Car Series will be back for a complete program of their heart-stopping wheel-to-wheel action next Saturday. The Mighty KKCY Stock Cars and Mini Stocks will also be back with their slam-bang form of all out action. The ever-popular Extreme Bombers will be featured with their wildly successful figure 8 action. This is not to be missed. It will be a gas. The Extreme Bomber races have turned into high-speed demolition derbies of a sort and are real crowd pleasers. Pit gates always open at 3PM. Spectator Gates Open at 5PM with racing getting underway at 7PM. Contact the promoters at 1.530.743.1327 or email as indicated on the home page. Press Release
Santa Maria, CA - August 4, 2007...Late Model Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, Fox 11 First at Ten Super Streets and Factory Stocks filled the night with the sounds of racing Saturday at Santa Maria Speedway.
*Past champ Mike Johnson showed his old form in the 30-lap Late Model feature event, taking the lead from fellow Lompoc driver Chet Buckley on lap 11, and driving away for his first victory of the season at SMS. Johnson finished ahead of A. J. Kirkpatrick, of Prunedale, and point leader Billy Griffin, of Buena Park, who set fast time of 14.050 seconds in qualifying. Next in line were San Luis Obispo's Steve Drake and Bakersfield's Jerry Stewart. Griffin, Johnson and Drake won 8-lap heat races.
*Like the Late Models the IMCA Modifieds also showed up with a nineteen car field and for the first time this season Bakersfield's Brad Pounds, who has raced Santa Maria five times in 2007, did not walk away with the 25-lap main event. Santa Maria's Danny Lauer grabbed the lead from Ron Wiley, also of Santa Maria, on the 5th circuit and held it to the checkered flag, despite challenges from Coalinga's Rich Denman. It was Lauer's second feature victory of the season. Pounds finished third, followed by David Addamo, of Santa Maria, and Randy Thornell of Apple Valley. Addamo, Denman and Kenny Kirkpatrick, of Nipomo, were 8-lap heat race winners.
*A small but aggressive field of Super Streets put on a heated battle, especially for the lead, in their 20-lap feature event. Santa Maria's Tom Breshears took the lead at the drop of the green and was pursued by Joey Silva, of Santa Maria, for the first half of the race. Silva gave way to rookie Kyle Heckman, of Nipomo, who then passed the leader briefly on lap 16, before passing for the win in the final two turns of the final lap. It was the first career victory in Super Streets for Heckman who was followed home by Breshears and Silva. Fourth was Tom Grzincic, of Atascadero in a borrowed mount, and fifth went to Elton Shaffer of Santa Maria. The loan heat race was won by Silva.
*Factory Stocks showed up with their usual 20+ field and, for the fifth time this season, it was the Dave Thompson show. The Santa Maria driver started ninth on the grid for the 20-lap main event, and methodically worked his way through the field to take the lead on lap 10 and drive away for the victory. Second place was taken by Ray Pezzi, of Terra Bella, his best finish of the season, and third was Michael Frazier of Santa Maria. Fourth and fifth were Doyle Graham, Jr., of Grover Beach, and Kevin Linson of Arroyo Grande. Eight-lap heat races were won by Frazier, Santa Maria's Kirk Morgan, and Nipomo's Tim Correia.
* Next Saturday night USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Cars make their second appearance of the season on the 1/3-mile oval, joined by NMRA TQ Midgets and Mini Stocks. Ticket prices will be $18.00 for adults, $14.00 for seniors (65+), $3.00 for children 6 to 12, 5 and under free. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on Hutton Road.

FIVE FEATURES ATTRACT 4,000 SPECTATORS TO IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY - By Tim Kennedy
Irwindale, CA., Aug. 4 - Five features attracted more than 4,000 spectators to Irwindale Speedway Saturday night for NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing, a demolition derby, and round three in the USAC K & N Filters Ford Focus Midget five race series. The series within the 17-race touring series has stops at eight paved tracks in four western states-California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah. It was LA Dodgers Baseball Appreciation Night presented by LA Racing Experience (the race-car driving experience/school at IS) in a promotional effort with the major league baseball LA Dodgers organization.
Feature race winners were April 28 main event winner Chris Carmody, a 23-year old Valencia-resident and three-year series veteran in the NASCAR Auto Club Late Model Series. He drove one of four High-Point Distributing/Justice Brothers Chevy Monte Carlos to lead all 40-laps on the banked half-mile. A first-ever IS tie for first place tie occurred in a $2,000 nine-car demolition derby in the infield that concluded action at 10:17 p.m. Co-winners split the first place and second place money and both drivers went home with $750. In racing on the four-degree banked third-mile, series point leaders Tom Landreth (Legend Cars) and Tyler Rogers (Justice Brothers Mini Stocks) won their respective 30-lap main events.
Beau DeBard, a 19-year old USAC Ford Focus Midget rookie and member of the four-car Ron Sutton driver development team, started and finished first in a 35-lap race. His first victory at IS utilized the third-mile as well in an IS season-high 16 car field. It was his second triumph in the series and followed his July 14 victory at Altamont Raceway near Tracy. Midget teams raced for a $3,395 purse. The winner from Reno drove the same No. 42 Sutton car, a 2007 chassis built by long-time sprint car driver Steve Kent, of Fresno. DeBard climbed to fourth place in overall season points, 72-points behind the series leader. DeBard also jumped from seventh to third in K & N Filters Irwindale-only points after three of the five scheduled races. Round four of USAC FF Midget racing at IS will take place next Saturday, August 11. The fifth and final round in the K & N FF Midget series will occur at the annual USAC Thanksgiving Midget Grand Prix on November 22.
ACLM: Dan DiGiacomo started his Chevy from pole position as the fourth quickest qualifier and chased winner Carmody all 40-laps. He trailed by ten yards (0.560) and claimed his second consecutive runner-up finish. A green, white checkered flag finish enabled DiGiacomo to make one last bid for victory and his side by side move fell just short. His 48-points moved him up to tenth position in ACLM points after 11 of 14 races. Fastest qualifier Scott Jenkins, a 24-year old series rookie from Portland, OR, started fourth and ran third for 33 laps. Kevin Callahan dropped him to fourth on lap 34, but Jenkins reclaimed third for good three laps from the checkers. Callahan, point leader Tim Huddleston (owner of the Carmody and Jenkins cars), Richie Alltman, Michael Wright, 18-year old ACLM rookie/USAC FF Midget graduate Jace Meier (in the fourth Huddleston Chevy), Brian Jones and Gerald Lair rounded out the top ten.
The 44-minute ACLM 27-car feature had seven caution flags for multi-car crashes. Sixteen drivers finished and 13 completed all 40-laps. A three-car collision in turn two on the second lap sidelined one car. Two cars bumped exiting turn four on lap 12, sending June 23 feature winner Mike Johnson's Chevy to the infield with right side damage after it slammed off the wall. Three cars also came together on lap 24 approaching the starting line with Sean Bennett and Jonathan Greaney spinning across the starting line as Greaney's car shed its hood. The two cars stopped together in mid-track about 30-yards past the starting line and other cars passed high and low. Wreckers towed both cars to the pits. Lindsey King's car was involved and sidelined as well.
On lap 32 two ACLM rookie drivers named Travis (Irving No. 85 and Motley (No. 91) were battling each other for 11th place after both drivers started in row six. Their cars came together in the fourth turn and Irving's car slammed off the wall and stopped. A wrecker towed it to the pits and officials sent Motley to the back of the field for causing Irving's crash. A lap later the cars of Motley and George Ruark came together in turn two, sidelining Motley's Monte Carlo. Aaron Staudinger, a two-time ACLM winner this year, had an eventful, frustrating race. He started 18th and became involved in two incidents of car contact with other drivers. Mike Varela, in 11th place, spun tail first into the fourth turn crash-wall on lap 37 after contact with Staudinger. Both drivers restarted at the back. Then Staudinger and Rodney Peacher cars got together on lap 39. The race director sent Staudinger to the pits. He was incredulous and blamed the other two drivers. His spotter, his wife, urged him via radio to keep his cool and he angrily complied with the order to pit.
LEGENDS: Landreth, a five-time champion in the six years of Legend car racing at IS, started third and became the third race leader on the sixth lap. He paced the 23-car field to the checkers for his fourth victory in nine main events this season. It was his third consecutive triumph and fourth in the last five races. Landreth logged his 33rd main event victory (all in Legends) and moved into a third place tie with ACLM driver Huddleston for third place on the list of all-time IS main event winners. The 39-year old veteran praised his younger competitors skills and said point leader Darren Amidon, 22, will be tough to catch for the championship with five races remaining. Landreth cut four points from Amidon's lead and now trails the San Diego area driver by 44-points.
Austin Grabowski, 18, came from 11th on the grid and took second place from ninth starter Amidon on lap 29 of 30. They trailed Landreth by 50-yards (more than two seconds) in a 14-minute race with three caution flags. Teenager Jeremiah Wagner, from Las Vegas, paid his $250 fine for speeding through the pits to get back into competition during the last feature. He set his first fastest qualifying time at IS in a 25-car field. Wagner started and finished fourth in the main event. Josh Geer, from the pole, led lap 5 after passing first four laps leader Cory Miles. Geer finished fifth as 18 of 23 starters reached the checkered flag with 17 cars on the lead lap.
MINI STOCKS: It was family feud time in the Justice Brothers Mini Stock Pole starter Eric Reed led 15 laps before point leader/second starter Tyler Rogers moved his Ford Pinto into the lead with an inside pass through the third and fourth turns. It was his fourth victory in nine 2007 mains. Steve Rogers, father of the winner, also passed Reed on lap 19 and cut into his son's 25-yard lead. His Pinto was on Tyler's back bumper with two laps remaining and finished 0.183 back. Reed's Pinto took third, 0.606 behind the winner. Fastest qualifier Rich Garver's Toyota Celica earned fourth. Thirteen of 15 starters finished the 17-minute event that had two yellow flags. Eleven drivers ran all 30-laps. Winner Rogers was ill with flu symptoms. "I took it easy with him. I'll be harder on him next time," dad Steve told the crowd. "Dad should have won tonight. I blocked him tonight," Tyler admitted. He thanked his dad for preparing the three Rogers family Pintos, including the one raced by his brother Jacob, a rookie.
FF MIDGETS: Pole starter DeBard out-jumped fellow front row starter Justin Hommel at the start and paced the 16-car field to the first of three yellow flags on lap 16. Nic Faas, 17, took second from Hommel on lap 19, but he became involved in the second caution on lap 27 in turn two. His car stopped at turn three of the half-mile. Point leader Tim Skoglund, a two-time winner at IS this season, spun as did rookie Robby Josett and Shawn Buckley. The third caution involved a loop by fifth place Tom Dyer and sixth place Caitlin Shaw dropped out with a flat RF tire. DeBard ran off to a 20-yard (1.108 second) victory over his Sutton Racing teammate Ian Miille, the only FF Midget veteran on the four member team. Hommel had a career-best third place in the 35-lap race. Skoglund, 19, raced back to fourth with 18-year old rookie Dan Adler fifth in a Sutton car. Walt Johnson, Charles Maier, 72-year old retired airline captain J. R. Williams, Austin Williams (teenage son of sprint car champion Rip Williams), and Mark Atkinson were the only other finishers in a 24-minute race. Atkinson was fourth on the final lap when he spun and dropped six positions.
DEMO DERBY: The final event was a $2,000 nine-car demolition derby with $1,000 going to the winner. After 20 consecutive minutes of smashing and bashing (despite two engine fires in the same tough car) officials ruled the outcome was a tie--a first at IS. Travis Altsather and Stan McDonald, in a 1976 Chevy Impala, each received $750 from the combined first and second place payoffs. McDonald, 39, is a US Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant with two tours of duty in war-torn Iraq. He will retire from the USMC in four months after 20-years of service. The Valley Center resident (near Camp Pendleton) has six demo derby victories including wins at IS and Del Mar. He said he got his winning car in Yuma, AZ and it might not see additional DD action.
HARD CHARGERS/FAST TIMERS: Hard charger $100 gift certificates from Racecar Factory and Impact Racing went to (Legends)-Mark Iungerich (P 14 to 7); (MS)-Rod Schmitt ((P 12 to 8); (FF Midgets)-J. R. Williams (P 14 to 8) and (LM)-Lair (P 23 to 10). Robert Rice led all six laps and won the ACLM trophy dash for the 19th-24th fastest qualifiers. Fastest qualifiers were (LC)-Wagner-16.929 (70.813 mph); (MS)-Garver-17.136 (69.958 mph); (FF Midgets)-Faas-14.519 (82.568), and (LM)-Jenkins-19.117 (94.157 mph).

Chris Rahe Roars to Victory at King's Speedway By Robert Haugh
Piloting the #3c, fast-timer Chris Rahe emerged victorious in the 30-lap DMS Race Products BCRA Midget feature at the speedy 3/8-mile King's Speedway in Hanford on Saturday, August 4.
Rahe overtook David Prickett on lap 23, leading the final seven laps en route to claiming his first BCRA Midget feature victory. Rahe becomes the tenth different BCRA feature winner in as many races.
Following Rahe to the checkers were Prickett in the Neverlift Motorsports #15 Stealth/Van Dyne, 7-time BCRA champion “Ageless Wonder” Floyd Alvis aboard the “Green Beret” #18 Champion Automotive Stealth/Esslinger, 16-year-old BCRA points leader Justin Grant aboard the Dave and Wendy Thurston #17 Spike/Esslinger and Ryan Kaplan in the Ken Kaplan #21 Stealth/Mopar rounding out the Top Five.
Third-place BCRA pointsman David Prickett had his best BCRA Midget outing to date, leading several laps behind-the-wheel of the #15 Neverlift Motorsports Stealth/Van Dyne. Prickett, who lost his regular dirt engine at a recent race, campaigned the Van Dyne engine usually only campaigned in his pavement Midget.
Alvis surged from the rear of the field in claiming third place after gently rolling over entering Turn 2 on Lap 10.
Rounding out the lead lap finishers were Steve Roza aboard Bob Roza's #20 Stealth/Esslinger in sixth and Rick Faeth aboard his #3 Stealth/Chevy V4 in seventh.
After starting outside the front row in the feature, Grant passed Alvis on the opening lap, stretching out to a wide lead early, leading the first 13 laps before rescinding his lead, pitting the #17 Thurston Spike/Esslinger while under caution for a flip by BCRA visitor Joey Fabozzi aboard the #84 on Lap 13. Car owner and crew chief Dave Thurston quickly repaired the damaged left front shock in time for Grant to return without losing a lap. Fabozzi's crash is believed to have been caused by a broken left front shock. Fabozzi was uninjured.
With Grant temporarily exiting, Prickett took control of the top spot, vying to become the fifth first-time BCRA Midget feature winner of the season. Continuing to outpace Rahe and pursuers hugging the bottom groove, Prickett led through Lap 24 when Rahe catapulted around Prickett on the outer line en route to the win. Rahe had been delicately picking cars off on the high-groove all race, avoiding several tangle-ups.
After running in the Top five, two-time reigning BCRA champion John Sarale dropped out in his Sarale Farms #32 Stealth/Riolo-Chevy after breaking a left front shock, winding up in eighth in a field depleted by chassis and engine woes. Hanford's Jared Little pitted at the halfway mark, returning later several laps down to score a ninth-place run aboard his #23 Stinger/Mopar with BCRA visitor Quinton Crye coming home tenth aboard the #15x Glenn Crye mount. Crye dropped out because of blowing oil out of his oilpan that later proved to have a hole in it.
19-year-old BCRA rookie Kevin Morris was running third behind Grant and Prickett prior to making heavy contact with the front stretch wall aboard father Del's #17k Spike/Esslinger mount on Lap 13, ending his evening prematurely. Morris managed to avoid severe catastrophe, slowing the car and eluding overturning the car. Morris was uninjured.
Ralphie “The Racer” Cortez had a strong run going aboard the #31 Cortez/Walker Motorsports Stealth/Esslinger before dropping out with engine oiling problems, relegating him to his fourth dirt DNF of the year in as many races. Cortez had been running in the Top Seven up until he dropped out.
Sarale claimed Heat 1 over of Alvis, Cortez, Faeth and Grant.
Ryan Kaplan captured Heat 2 over Jimmy Voitel, Rahe, Morris, Prickett and Quinton Crye.
Rahe topped the clocks, catapulting around the slick 3/8-mile oval with a time of 16.040, just four hundredths from breaking into the 15-second bracket.
The 2007 DMS Race Products BCRA Midget series continues its season Saturday at John Padjen's 1/4-mile Placerville Speedway in the beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills on August 11. Prior to the evening's racing, the Annual Jack London Bash Hall of Fame & Picnic will be held on the picnic grounds at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds, adjacent to the pit area.
