Joey Moughan – Exciting 2014 Begins Saturday!

(Bill W) March 20, 2014 – One of the up and coming racers who flies under the radar is Joey Moughan of Springfield, Illinois.  The young driver has picked up wins in whatever he has raced, from non-wing and wing sprints with 410 or 360 power to midgets, the talent is evident.  Despite never getting an opportunity to run on a national level, Joey has made the most of his opportunities. While he would entertain a ride on a national level, he has things set regionally in the Midwest and is excited for 2014.  His season gets underway aboard the Wilson Brothers #17M this Saturday nightwith USCS at Poplar Bluff Speedway in Missouri.

The always humble driver will have his uncle in his corner for much of this season.  “I’d like to thank all the people who have helped and are on board for this year as we get the season started,” says Joey.  “My uncle, Mark Moughan, and Moughan Electric are on board with me.  With (Joey’s Uncle) Jim scaling back his racing, Mark is going to be helping me some more this year.  Modern Paving & Scrap and Maxim Chassis, who keeps me working during the winter, are with me again too, and I really appreciate them.”

Joey has a busy season planned.  “This is a big year for me,” he says.  “There’s a lot of racing planned.  I want to find out if I can do this for a living.  That’s what I want to do.  I’m going to race pretty hard.  I’d like to race for someone on a national level and would do that, but I’m fortunate to be involved with good people who give me the opportunity to go race every weekend.  It’s the first year I’ve had where I’m really out of debt, I have spares in the garage and I’m in shape.  I have a great crew.  Hank Pollock is a great help and will be with me most of the year too.”

The primary focus as of now is the 410 Midwest Open Wheel Association, with whom he picked up another win last year.  “I think we’re going for that MOWA championship, between my stuff and the Northrop’s (#83),” says Joey.  “We’ll split the nights up a little with the series, with their car and mine.  Even though I helped start the (series), I’ve never really been in a position to go for the championship.  I’ve never been much of a points’ guy though, I definitely race for wins.  We’ll be at every show and try to do it right.  I like to ‘win it or wear it’…I guess I’m a bit of a gunslinger.   I work all week so I can do this stuff!”

In addition, Joey will pick up other regional action with the World of Outlaws, the IRA and the Knoxville Nationals.  “Mark and I built a car to run at Knoxville and some of the bigger tracks with,” he says.  “When the MOWA schedule doesn’t conflict, we’ll hit the Outlaw shows in the area too with my car.  I always look forward to the Knoxville Nationals and we’ll be there in the Moughan Electric car.”

In addition, Joey plans to race plenty of 360 races, with the Sprint Invaders and USCS, starting this weekend.  He won with the Invaders again last season.  “I’m looking forward to running with the Wilson Brothers out of Tennessee again,” he says of his 360 car owners.  “Tim Engler (Engler Injections) has helped me over the winter and I’m really pumped about running their 360 again this year.”

After a successful trip to the Chili Bowl in Tulsa last January, Joey is also going to see several nights in a midget.  “I’m going to be running Tommy Casson’s midget a few times,” he says.  “There are a few other deals I might try for a night or two, like with Austin Brown and their midgets.  I plan on going into next year’s Chili Bowl with a few nights under our belt.  We made the B there this year, but I’d like to do better and put it in the show.”

The desire to make a living out of racing is evident with Joey.  “This is what I want to do,” he says. “I’ve never gone away from a racetrack wondering why I didn’t try harder.  That’s not going to change this year.  The difference is, this year, I have some spares to keep me going.  We’d like to aim for around ten wins.”

Sights are set on big things for Joey.  “I’d like to get to the point where Brian Brown is,” he says. “Though I’m always open to driving for others, he’s made it work with his own team.  He’s the perfect combination of a driver and team manager.  It would be nice to do it the way you want, and maybe five years down the road, that can be me.”
