(Oxnard, Ca., 3-16-14) Ventura Raceway will continue the new 2014 season this weekend March 22, with a full program of oval track, open wheel and stock car racing at our Ventura County Fairgrounds facility in Ventura California. This week we continue the new season with a full program of VRA Sprints, Senior Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Focus Midgets, Sport Compacts, Mod Lites and our Junior Classes.
Opening night saw Kyle Smith take the first win of the new season on a very difficult track due to rain earlier in the week that made the track rutty in turn one and three. this week he will go for another win against the best VRA drivers including Greg Taylor, Rick Hendrix, Tom Hendricks, Guy Woodward, Don Gansen, Cody Majors, Luke Boles and many others. These drivers will thrill you as they approach 80 MPH on our 1/5 mile clay oval competing in 10 lap heat races, semi mains when needed and a 30 lap feature.
In VRA Senior Sprints, defending champion Clif Warren started the new season with a win as he goes for three championships in a row. He will be going against other over 45 year old drivers in this very competitive class that features the same cars as the regular VRA Sprints with age being the only difference. Other drivers expected to compete are Wally Pankratz, Chris Meredith, Ed Schwarz, Mike Cook and others.
Joshua Vogt started the new IMCA season with a strong race win over 2013 series champion
Robbie Witwer opening night. The modified racing was fast and furious and we look forward to this continuing all season long. This class of open wheeled V 8 Stock Cars always provides exciting on track wild racing action. Other drivers expected to compete include many time champ Jack Parker, , last season runner-up Brad Prows, Donald Houghton, Dave Phipps, Andrew Phipps, Steve Bulpitt, Dennis Eckert and many others who race this series throughout the western United States.
Ford Focus Midgets will open their Ventura season this week. These spec engined midget racers put on hard fought racing each night they race here. This is a class for up and coming drivers. Last year's champion Brennan Rogers will do battle with the rest of the Focus field of young drivers and veteran drivers.
2012 and 2013 Sport Compact Champion Zack Peterson Started the new season with a win on opening night March 8. He will lead this class of four cylinder racers into action this week. This entry level series is designed to get drivers racing on the clay oval with the goal of some of them moving up to higher level classes.
VRA Mod Lites are back this week with 2013 Series champ Ricky Lewis back to try to defend his title against the rest of the field of drivers that includes Jeffrey Fry, Dave Dotson, Mike Gilmore, Kim Lewis, George Calvo and others. Last week Johnathan Henry dominated the field to take the win on opening night.
Our three kids classes open their season this week. They will be racing in Junior Midgets, Mini Dwarf Pistons and Superchargers. These classes allow young up and coming drivers a place to develop their racing skills. Supercharger Champ J D Brown and Junior Midget Champ Nick Velasquez will be back to battle the rest of the field in their division.
Pit gates open at 12 Noon with front gates opening at 3:00PM. Racing gets under way with warm-up and preliminary events at 3:30 with racing getting under way at 5:30. Admission prices for this event are $15.00 for Adults, $11.00 for Seniors, Military and Students with ID. Kids 12 and under are free.
