PRESS RELEASE, HOOSIER RACING TIRES CIVIL WAR SERIES
FROM THE OFFICE OF JOHN PADJEN MOTORPORTS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, SUNDAY, JULY 28, 2007

DeCaires scores third Placerville Speedway victory of the season in 12th point race
By Bill Sullivan

PLACERVILLE, CA – Veteran sprint car driver Greg DeCaires of Elk Grove continued his streak of success at Placerville Speedway Saturday night. Driving the John Taylor Motorsports #35 sprint car, DeCaires improved on his championship point lead with his third victory of the 2007 racing season.

DeCaires now matches Placerville driver C.J. Humphreys for the role of the winningest driver of the season. Ironically, when DeCaires began the current racing season with car owner John Taylor they planned to race the weekly series on a part time basis and were focusing on the Civil War Series. With four races left in the season, DeCaires is prepared to drive his way to a second career championship at the track where the fans and competitors seem to truly respect him.

“Yes when we started out we weren’t really planning on doing the weekly deal like this,” said DeCaires. “We were going to kind of pick an choose when to run. But here we are in the point lead. I just can’t believe what type of season we’re having, it’s just one of those years you kind of dream about having. I’m ready to ride this thing out and try for another championship, it’s something I would like to do for John Taylor and his family, they’ve been so good to me these last four years.”

DeCaires started the feature event on the outside of the front row next to pole sitter Troy Machado. At the waving of the green flag, DeCaires set the stage for an event he led for every lap. Early in the race a red flag flew when Machado, Humphreys and Billy Butler tangled in the first and second turn to draw a red flag.

Once the event was restarted another multi-car collision in the same turn resulted in fourth place runner Andy Forsberg of Auburn coming to a stop when he tried to avoid a collision. Forsberg was charged with the caution flag and put to the rear of the field for the restart.

Once the race underwent the green flag again, DeCaires dominated the lead position and worked his way into lapped traffic as early as the seventh lap. The defending track champion and 2005 Civil War champion was distantly challenged to the checkered flag by Justin Johnson of Shingle Springs. Johnson had a season best second place finish place at the end of the 25-lap affair. Andy Gregg of Placerville started fifth in the event and charged to the third position. Matt Petty of Jackson was fourth followed by Placerville’s Scott Russell.

‘Everything just went our way tonight,” said DeCaires. “John (Taylor) and the crew had the car perfect and the lapped traffic just came at the right time each lap. I don’t know the last time I won three races at the same track in one season. We’re just having a great year and I hope it continues this way.”

Saturday’s Pro Stock main event looked more like a destruction derby then a feature event as spins, crashing and crazy driving resulted in numerous caution periods. Before the race had come to an end one two cars were without serious sheet metal damage in a race where even the track pace car was struck after drivers continued to race following the waving of a caution flag.

“I guess I missed all of it tonight,” said Jeff Arbogast Jr. of Auburn, who won his third feature event of the year. “From what they told me all of the crashing and banging was just two cars behind me so I guess I got out in front at the right time.”

To illustrate just how bizarre this event was, Arbogast started the feature event at the rear of the field, in the ninth position. During the 20 laps that followed the green flag the second generation driver first passed Marek Bernert of Orangevale and then took over spot after spot, slicing and dicing his way through the battle field.

During one yellow flag, John Kreil and Forryst Carnett of Placerville failed to slow during a yellow caution period. When the two drivers approached the start finish line Carnett swerved to avoid rear ending Kreil and side swiped the speedway pace vehicle that was merging on to the track surface. The incident was the first time the pace vehicle was struck during an event at Placerville Speedway and both vehicles received cosmetic damage.

When the checkered flag waved, Arbogast was the the only car that remained unscathed in the event. He was followed across the line by Marek Bernert of Orangevale. Earlier in the event Bernert and Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City collided and remained stuck together for more than a lap until a yellow flag flew t separate the two drivers. Brown managed to rally back to the third position followed by Kreil, Carnett and Mike Moran of Rancho Cordova.

Saturday’s aggressive driving styles caught the attention of several track officials and the promoter. In the coming weeks a pre race driver’s meeting is expected to cover subjects such as safety rules, what the flags represent and the increased penalties for violations of such rules will also be reviewed and applied.

The pure stock division saw Jason Englund of Citrus Heights win his third feature event of the year. The waving of the green flag was followed by Folsom’s Matt Tilford taking the lead. Tilford entered the night just one point behind Englund in the point standings. Tilford lead the event by several car lengths until the ninth lap when he approached the lapped car of B.J. Hauck. of Placerville. Hauck spun sideways in front of Tilford in the second turn and collected the leader as Garden Valley’s Kevin Wirth and Englund drove by to take the lead he would never relinquish.

“I was loving it out there tonight, racing side by side with Matt (Tilford) for the lead, were good friends,” said Englund. “When I saw what happened to him I felt bad, that was a tough break and he has had some hard luck lately. I want to win any race I am in but that’s not how you want to win it. Hopefully we can have a good battle for this point championship in the next few races.”

Englund was followed across the line by early race leader Wirth, Burney McClure and Mike McClure. John Durrett of Pollock Pines finished fifth ahead of Tilford who passed seven cars in the last 11 laps to finish sixth.

The Nor Cal Dwarf Cars join the three track regulars Saturday night. In this event Patrick Weger of Grass Valley took the lead from Eldorado’s Doug Martin on the third lap. On the tenth lap Weger spun out and Martin resumed the lead with point leader Mike Grenert of Travis Air Force Base in second place. For the final ten laps Martin and and Grenert races inches apart in a heated battle for the lead. On lap 18 Grenert overtook Martin in the fourth turn to steal the lead just before the white flag waved. At the finish line Grenert was followed by Martin, Neil Stingson, Kevin Bender and Josh Hiatt.

“That was fun race tonight, Doug was hard to get around,” said Grenert. ‘We always run well at this place. I just want to thank everyone that sponsors me and my crew chief for all his hard work, he’s the best in the business.”

The stock car divisions will have plenty of time to replace sheet metal as they have a week off from Placerville Speedway next Saturday night. The Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Sprint Car Series returns to town for its third visit of the season. The evening is being titled “Food 4 Less – Nugget Markets Night” as some 100 associates of Food 4 Less and Nugget Markets have been invited as a special guests of John Padjen Motorsports for their contributions in the way of contingency awards and sponsorship during the 2007 racing season.

Tim Kaeding Clean Sweeps ay Chico
by Troy Hennig

CHICO, CA (7-27-07) - Since returning back to California the only thing that has stopped Tim Kaeding visiting victory lane has been a back problem that prevented him from racing the Golden State Challenge race on July 14. Kaeding led all 30 laps to win his fourth main event in a row and fifth for the season during the King of California Series. In fact, Kaeding has won five of the six main events he has entered this season and the other race he finished third. Tonight, Kaeding clean swept the field. He turned the quickest lap, won his heat race and won the main event. Kaeding addressed the question if it’s been easy for him by responding, “No way has this been easy in fact tonight was a tough track you had to hit your marks every lap. I knew my old man was right behind me and closing. During the last restart I had sealed over my tire and couldn’t get away from him.” Brent finished second and alluded to Tim’s winning ways. “Tim’s been real good since coming home but we want to wish him luck as he returns back to the Mid West and hopefully will kick some butt out there too,” said Brent. Enjoying a podium finish was Peter Murphy

Murphy and Kaeding started on the front row of the 30-lap main event. However, it was Tim Kaeding who was the leader after the first lap. Kaeding started on the inside of row two but it was soon very apparent that he was the class of the field. On lap three Shain Matthews and Mark Workentine spun in turn one. The race resumed with Kaeding leading Murphy. On lap six it was Brent’s turn to move around Murphy and take over the second spot. On lap eleven Brandon Wimmer and Mike Henry stopped in turn four. Another six laps went by until Robbie Whitchurch flipped to bring out the red.

Kaeding was still leading Kaeding. Lap 19 brought out another yellow when Ken Fredenburg in turn four collected Trevor Green. The local story of the night was Mason Moore. The 16-year-old was running in the fifth position until lap 22 when he clipped the infield tire and broke his front end. He came to a stop and was towed off the track but received a nice ovation from the crowd. On the next restart Wimmer tangled with Johnny Gray and both were wrecked for the night. With the two cars tangled on the track the officials decided to do a fuel only stop before continuing the race.

The final seven laps clicked off without a problem. Tim was never able to shed Brent the final few laps. Murphy was holding off his teammate Ronnie Day for third. Day had a good run to finish fourth. Greg DeCaires moved from his ninth place starting spot to finish fifth. Chico’s top finisher was Matt Shelton who finished an impressive sixth. Oroville’s Sean Becker finished seventh. Becker is Brent Kaeding’s closest competitor in the King of California championship chase. Going into tonight’s finale Kaeding leads Becker by an unofficial 30-point lead. Three drivers each moved up ten spots from their starting spot. Willie Croft, Jon Maiwald and Pat Harvey each gained 10 spots during the 30-lap main event.

DeCaires led all ten laps to win the B main event. Wimmer and Evan Suggs were the next three to cross the finish line.

Murphy won the six-lap dash to earn the right to start on the pole of the main event.

Tim Kaeding started sixth in the first heat race and ended up winning the ten-lap race. Shain Matthews won the second heat race. Johnny Gray won the third heat race. Jason Statler led all ten laps to win the fourth heat race.

Tim Kaeding started off the night by turning the quickest lap in qualifying with an 11.582.

A total of 32 cars raced during round number 24 of the King of California Series.

Baker Boys run 1st & 2nd again at Hollywood Hills Speedway
28 July 2007
Bob Ingram / Beth Hazlewood

San Felipe Pueblo, New Mexico. After being rained out last Saturday night the weather again looked bad for dirt track racing at Hollywood Hills Speedway. But fortunately for fans and drivers it turned out to be a beautiful night for racing. Due to the weather and several other factors the car count was down a bit from previous weeks but the cars that did show up definitely came to RACE. The Sprint cars had their lowest count of the season as a few drivers had damage from last weekends racing in Kansas. Most notably among this group was Jason Tanner driver of the Bill & Debi Richards #7. Jason suffered 3rd degree burns and is presently in the hospital at UNMH. Jason is expected to make a full recovery and be back to racing in the near future. Once again the fans of racing showed their support of a driver in need as the drivers from the Sprint car division passed through the stands with helmets in hand and collected an amazing $1651.00 to help Jason and his family through this difficult time. THANKS to the wonderful fans at HHS.

Although the Sprints had only 14 cars on hand, they put on some of the best racing of the year, especially in the Main Event as 13 of the 14 starters finished on the lead lap. Heat #1 was a thriller as the #21 of Paul Whitehead bicycled not once but twice between turns 3 & 4 but managed to keep all four wheels on the ground. Grants, N.M. driver Bo Baker took the win over the #78 of Jody Williams with the #77 of teenage rookie Colt Treharn taking the show position. Heat #2 saw Bo’s son Jessie Baker take the win in a caution free race over the #40X of Scott Box with the #9X of Kelly Denison coming home in the 3rd position. Since his win in the Main Event a couple of weeks ago Denison has gained a lot of confidence and has been throwing his car sideways in every turn on the high side of the track, much to the delight of the fans. The Sprint Cars ran a 4 lap Dash for Cash for $200.00 sponsored by A-1 Transmissions of Santa Fe. Kelly Denison in the #9X took the win over #11W Tim West. This was Denison’s second Dash for Cash win this year. The Main Event saw all 14 cars on hand take the green flag and all but one car finish on the lead lap, as the car of rookie driver Chris Spiak spun early in the race and retired to the infield. All throughout this race the battle for the lead was fearsome, as the top 10 cars were nose to tail and side by side lap after lap. Bo and Jessie Baker put on quite a show as they came from their 6th row starting spots to pick cars off on nearly every lap until they were able to get to the front. For the last several laps with Jessie in the lead, dad Bo tried high and low to take the point, but in the end Jessie was again able to hold off dad for his second Main Event win of the year, both of which Bo was chasing him to the checkered flag. In the end it was Jessie Baker followed by Bo Baker with the #65 of a very hard charging Rick Johnson a very close 3rd followed by #11W Tim West and rookie #77 Colt Treharn in a very respectable 5th position.

The Street Stocks had a field of only 13 cars on hand, but as in the Sprints they put on some fantastic racing for the fans. This group of drivers were able to run both heats, a dash and their Main Event with only 2 caution flags during the Main Event. Heat #1 was a very close battle between the #66 of Clay Moseley who had suffered some major damage in a crash a few weeks ago and the #24 of Multi-Division racer Cooder Frazier, and another Multi-Division racer #97 Skimmer Leathem. In the end Moseley was able to hold off Frazier and Leathem in that order. Heat #2 saw the #27 of Jay Pape who has not raced in a couple of years doing battle with 3 of the fastest drivers in this class as the #96 of Joe Smithberger, the #72 of Jeff Whyman and the #1 of Ronnie Bell all raced within a few feet of each other the entire race. . In the end Smithberger took the win over Pape with Whyman taking home the 3rd spot. The Street Stocks ran a 4 lap Dash for Cash for $100.00 sponsored by abet Automotive of Santa Fe. This dash was won by the #1 of Ronnie Bell with the #72 of Jeff Whyman a close second. The Main Event saw all 12 of the cars on hand take the green flag. As in the heat race Smithberger was able to recover from an early spin and take the win over the #66 of Moseley with the #1 of Bell, the #97 of Leathem and the #72 of Whyman filling out the top five positions. These drivers in the Street Stock class possibly run the closest, cleanest racing in any division as they run lap after lap, side by side and rarely ever even touch each other. This makes for some of the most exciting racing for the fans at HHS.

The Mini-Sprints also had a low car count as several drivers were out of town or committed to programs at other tracks. Even though there were only 12 cars on hand these little “MIGHTY RACERS” put on a whale of a show. Heat #1 saw the #19X of Jordan Matson take the win over ever improving #22X of David Gay with the #12 of Kenny Brewer taking the 3rd position in the regular car of Devin Whiteherad. Heat #2 had the #74X of Josh ( The Jet ) Hodges take yet another win over the VERY fast #17 of young D.J. Snyder from Pagosa Springs , followed by the #68 of Brian Perea. The Mini’s also ran a 4 lap Dash for Cash for $200.00 that was put up by THE INNS at PAGOSA. Fittingly Snyder who lives in Pagosa Springs took the win over the #33 of Joe Monteith and Brian Perea. The Main Event saw only 10 of the Mini’s make the call as the cars of #45X Ryan Culpepper and the #19X Jordan Matson were unable to make the call as they had mechanical problems either in their heat or at the start of the Main. As in the last 5 times that the Mini’s have run at HHS, 12 year old Josh Hodges came from his last row starting spot to take the win over the very good running #17 of D.J. Snyder with the #68 of Brian Perea, #7H Jerry Higgenbotham and the #95 of Aaron Wheeler filling out the top five positions. At this point in the season Hodges seems to be nearly unbeatable, but the cars of Matson, Snyder, B. Perea and a couple of drivers from Arizona are chomping at the bit to take the first win by another driver besides the #74X.

The Hobby Stocks had the largest field of the night with 15 cars. Heat #1 saw the only female driver in this class take the win over a couple of veteran drivers. The #54 of April Trujillo took the win over the #24 of Junior Bustillos with the #68 of Kenny Wheeler taking the 3rd spot. Heat #2 saw the #86 of Dan Harmon in a new car take the win over the #5X of another multi-division Rick Boelter with the #28 of Skimmer Leathem taking the 3rd spot. A-Bet Automotive of Santa Fe, again put up $100.00 for a 4 lap Dash for Cash that was won by the #74 of Curt Neff, followed by the #0 of J.R. Bonesteel and the #28 of Leathem. The Main Event saw all 15 cars on hand take the green flag. The top five spots in this race were in doubt until the checkered flag fell. The #58 of Mike Mendoza took the win over #0 J.R. Bonesteel with #28 Leathem, #86 Harmon and #54 Trujillo filling out the top 5 positions.

Thanks to all of the drivers, crews, sponsors, fans and staff at Hollywood Hills Speedway for another night of great racing at the finest Dirt Track Racing Facility in the Southwest. Be sure to come out next Friday & Saturday as HHS has the one and only Winged Sprint car show of the season. On Friday the Sprints will be joined by the Hobby Stocks and Cruisers and on Saturday the Sprints will be joined by the Modifieds and Street Stocks for one of the best dirt track shows to be seen in the Southwest this year.

It’s All About the Kaeding’s at Chico
By: Troy Hennig

(Chico, CA 7-28-07)…The Kaeding family stole the show Saturday night during the final night of racing of the Golden State Challenge King of California Series at Silver Dollar Speedway. Tim Kaeding captured the 30-lap main event win but it was Brent Kaeding who won his 13th King of California Championship. Both drivers also battled all 30 laps of the main event for the win. There was a five-lap stretch near the end of the race when the two swapped the lead every lap. Tim Kaeding won on Friday night and in doing so he also captured the Cherry St. Mini Storage bonus of $1,000 for posting the most points during the two nights. With the wins and the bonus Tim won over $7,000 for the weekend driving the Tom Rolfe Trucking #10. At the finish it was the Kaeding’s followed by a surging Brandon Wimmer in third. “I wish we could do this every night,” said Tim in response to a Gary Thomas question when asked about racing with his dad. “I don’t know how my old man can do what he does night in and night out but it just shows why he is the best in California again. We don’t give each other any room on the track and I hope the fans enjoyed as much as I did.” Tim also took a quick jab at his father when he said, “I am proud of what he did this year and one of these years I’ll get another Golden State title but for now I just want to go back on the road and maybe when I get to be his age I will win another one.”

Brent was joined by his crew the hogs on the front stretch. “That was fun racing with Tim and it’s been fun since he returned home, said Brent. “We almost got together a few times on the track and a couple of yellows didn’t go my way. I am not real happy with second but my boys have worked hard all year, we’ve been up on the podium all year and we are going to enjoy this championship tonight.” He also said, “I also have to thank those Hoserville people and putting up $600 for qualifying.” Brent turned the quickest lap at 12.117 driving the Al’s Roofing Supply Maxim #69. Brent won the title by 35-points over Sean Becker. Willie Croft finished third in the points while Jonathan Allard and Jason Statler tied for fourth in the final points.

Brandon Wimmer added, “I tried to move to the top of the track late in the race and moved up a few spots. Congrats to Tim and Brent, it’s been a great year and thanks to the Roth family for allowing me to driver their car.”

A big thanks goes out to ManCamp Motorsports who donated eight trophies for the heat race winners to give out to young fans in the grandstand.

Moore Insurance and Financial Inc. along with Scrubs Car Wash and Detail added extra give-a-ways for the grandstand crowd in sponsoring the night of racing.

The John Padjen Motorsports barbeque was well attended on Saturday afternoon to raise money for the Golden State Series point fund. During a raffle during the night of racing the fans raised an extra $1800 for the point fund.

Brent took the early lead from the get go. Brent started on the pole after winning the six-lap dash earlier. Tim moved into the second spot on lap one. The two ran nose to tail until lap four when Tim passed Brent in turn for and took the lead. Tim was able to stretch his lead until the first yellow on lap seven stopped the race. On the restart Brandon Wimmer moved in the third spot. Another driver on the move was Shain Matthews who won the B main event and now had moved into the fifth spot. Another driving holding his own was Evan Suggs who started on the front row with Brent and was solidly in the fourth spot.

On lap 17 Johnny Gray’s motor went up in a big ball of fire. The red was needed and the race was halted. After Gray’s car was cleared the race resumed with possibly the best racing all year. Tim was the leader and Brent had suddenly found some extra speed. The two started trading the lead for the next seven laps. With a top and a bottom allowing great side-by-side racing the Kaeding’s thrilled the crowd. If Tim went high, Brent went low. When Brent took the lead and went high, Tim went to the bottom. On lap 24 Tim regained the lead and never relinquished it to Brent. Kyle Larson stopped in turn one on the lap 25 to bring out the yellow.

Shain Mathews was now in the third spot. On the restart Matthews had a run on Brent going into turn three. Matthews went to the cushion while Brent went to the middle. As Brent slid up the track he didn’t know Matthews had a run to the top. What ensued was a racing accident at Matthews rode over Brent right rear tire and took a nasty flip. He walked away uninjured but done for the night.

Tim Kaeding led the final five laps to get the popular win. Brent crossed second while Wimmer was third. Suggs ended up fourth. The mover and shaker of the night was once again Jason Statler. The “big guy” started seventeenth and raced up to a fifth place finish. Statler is always a driver on the move in the main event.

Sean Becker led all eight laps to win heat one. Tim Kaeding started sixth but in four laps was leading heat race two. He went on to win the race. Trevor Green won the third heat race. Jon Maiwald won the fourth heat.

High side victory for Klein on Dilly Bar Night
Stein repeats and Bartlett wins again

Marysville- Dairy Queen Dilly Bar night was great fun. Everyone in attendance got FREE Dilly Bar Ice Cream bars compliments of the Yuba City Dairy Queen on Live Oak Blvd. It also had thrilling racing action that kept the fans around all night long. Another well manicured program had the fans headed home at a reasonable hour after a full 4 division show.
“High Flyin’” Herman Klein came back home for the first time this year. He parked Harley Van Dyke’s red hot rod on the cushion and passed his way to a spectacular feature event victory at Paul and Kathy Hawes’ Marysville Raceway Park Saturday night. Jerry Bartlett of Yuba City easily controlled the KKCY Country 103 Cup Street Stock feature. Steve Stein roared to another crowd-pleasing win with a late race pass in the Wingless Sprint Car Series event.

The “Wingless Warriors” presented their feature first. An initial jumped start put the first row last and Stein on the pole. Flanking Stein was Hawaii’s own Shawn Ternora who has been remarkably quick around MRP. Stein led the field into turn 1 with Ternora glued to his tail. Ternora used a slick inside maneuver coming to the conclusion of the lap and got by Stein.

Point leader Pat Russum had a night he’d rather forget. The normally fleet Russum went backwards from his 4th starting position. His closest rival in the point hunt, Mark Hill of Yuba City was mired deep in the pack and had to force his way to the front. They started to get close to one another as the race roared through a long green flag segment toward its conclusion. During that segment Stein stayed glued to Ternora as a monster of a tussle was going on for 3rd through 5th. Sacramento’s John Anderson, Chico’s Tony Richards and newcomer Josh Tucker slugged it out in the best race on the track. High and low passing opportunities for each of the trio kept this dice interesting.

With 2 to go Ternora still had Stein breathing down his neck when Russum lost the handle in turn 1 and slid to a stop setting up a green-white-checkers finish to the race. Hill had 6th in hand while Russum had to go to the rear.

The 2-lap dash to the flag featured an excellent turn 2 pass by Stein as Ternora left a tiny door open. Stein got through it and won his 2nd feature in a row. Ternora was 2nd with the surprising Tucker beating out the rest for 3rd. Richards was 4th with a resurgent Hill in 5th. Russum did some passing of his own in the final 2 laps to secure 9th in the final tally.

Stein’s return to the track that crowned him the 2005 champion has been extremely successful; two entries, two wins. But more than that, Stein’s professional attitude and engaging good nature has been a real bonus to the program.

A tip of the hat to 7th starting Tucker who, as far as we could research by this writing, has not competed at MRP before. He entered last week’s event, but had engine problems that kept his car on the trailer all night.

The KKCY Country 103 Cup Street Stocks were next. It was a slam-bang war that was finally won by Yuba City’s Jerry Bartlett. A 1st lap pile up virtually eliminated Yuba City’s Billy Knoop and point leader Phillip Shelby. Both drivers had nowhere to go when 2nd running Guy Bean lost it in turn 4. While both Knoop and Shelby continued at the new green, both cars were wounded in the scuffle and would retire early. Bean continued to an eventual 2nd place finish.

The new green had Harold Olschowka (substituting for son Jeff) leading, but he promptly spun out of the lead in turn 2. Cars darted everywhere but up to avoid the twirling leader. Jerry Bartlett was the first through and he grabbed a lead he would not give up. Heather Bartlett found 2nd in the melee. Carl Studhalter was keeping it straight and smooth and was scored in 3rd at this juncture of the race. Studhalter deposited his nosepiece on the front stretch shortly thereafter, however, creating a yellow flag and was sent to the rear.

Corey Hall, of Yuba City had used all of the early race thrills and spills to move swiftly into 3rd. The new green had the Bartlett’s shadowed by Hall. But, Hall promptly spun in turn 1 bringing out yet another caution flag. The last ¾ of the race went green all way with Jerry Bartlett running away. Heather Bartlett was 2nd when she encountered handling problems that caused her car to push wildly in turn 4 toward the wall. She nursed the car to an excellent 4th after Bean and Hall passed her in the closing laps.

Hall showed promise in his 1st ever stock car ride at MRP. After his quick spin while in 3rd, he started to get smooth and steady. His car went forward to its fine 3rd place finish.
Look for a jumble in the points when the race becomes official on Tuesday. Point leader Shelby’s early retirement will allow Heather Bartlett to close the gap.

The alcohol burning Winged Sprint Car Series brought down the curtain with an explosive feature event that was high on drama. Pole sitter Mike Monahan of Sparks Nevada led the field in the early laps, as Yuba City’s Korey Lovell found 2nd with point leader Jeremy Burt in 3rd. The lead trio stayed on the bottom for the first few circuits. Monahan was producing his signature wheelies almost at will while maintaining his lead.

A couple of minor yellow flag incidents slowed the pace for a while. During the yellow flags, Klein went to the top of the track and tested the traction up there. It was apparent as the field returned to green that he learned something. The race leaders stayed on the bottom as Klein tried the top as the race neared 5 laps completed. Sacramento’s Klein hooked up and started turning some wickedly fast laps. He eclipsed first Burt then 2nd running Lovell with relative ease. He got high on Monahan near ½ way and the race was on for the lead. Monahan was good down low and stayed even with Klein for several laps. Klein had it figured out though and began to put a little distance between himself and Monahan.

Two yellow flag segments near the end gave Monahan another shot at it and Monahan pulled along side on occasion when the new green flew. The race had the crowd screaming, but Klein, in the end would motor away to his 12th career victory at MRP. Lovell tried the high side after Klein got by and was having some success when he lost it and created one of the late race yellow flags. That yellow allowed Burt to get right behind Monahan and that produced yet another nail biting battle for 2nd. With 5 to go Burt finally slipped by Monahan and secured the runner up spot for good. Klein, however, was untouchable in the late laps and had a handy lead as the checkers flew. Monahan maintained 3rd.

An early race spin put infrequent competitor Dennis Harvey at the back of the field after an up front start. Harvey was another racer worth watching as the race progressed. He finished 4th at the end passing more cars than anyone. Additionally, Brandon Dozier of Marysville was set down for two weeks and fined by the race director for unsportsmanlike conduct during the running of the event.

Tim McLaughlin of Colusa dominated the Sprint 100 feature event and simply won going away. Champion Tony Gaoiran got to 2nd as the race neared ½ way, but couldn’t dig into McLaughlin’s insurmountable lead.

The “Wingless Warriors” Wingless Sprint Car Series will be back for a complete program of their heart-stopping wheel-to-wheel action next Saturday. The Mighty KKCY Stock Cars and Mini Stocks will also be back with their slam-bang form of all out action. The ever-popular Extreme Bombers will be featured after their wildly successful figure 8 struggle to take on a new challenge created by track promoter Hawes. It will be a gas. The Extreme Bomber races have turned into high-speed demolition derbies of a sort and are worth the price of admission alone.

Pit gates always open at 3PM. Spectator Gates Open at 5PM with racing getting underway at 7PM. Contact the promoters at 1.530.743.1327 or email as indicated on the home page. IT'S A CAUTION-FILLED NIGHT AT THE RACEWAY - QUEENER, FRONSMAN SWEEP THEIR DIVISIONS
by J.J. Calvacca

VICTORVILLE, California - For the race fans who packed the grandstand Saturday night at Victorville Auto Raceway, it must have appeared that Starter Bob Rideout's favorite color is yellow.

Rideout held a firm grasp on the caution flag for most of the night and found himself using it more than a little during the night as the boys and girls came to play in the dirt and even bang around a bit.

In a bit of a change from the usual race program track officials decided to conduct the Mini Dwarf feature race prior to the intermission. Usually the little cars kick off the feature program immediately following the intermission.

Hesperia's Shayna Galloway, who raced to a fourth-place finish in the earlier heat race, showed everyone the way home as she captured the checkered flag in the feature race. Llano's Jimmy McDonald took second place while Hesperia's Kelsey McLaughlin came under the flag in third place. Arcadia's James "LJ" Billings, who won the earlier heat event, finished in fourth place in the Main Event.

Like so many of the youngsters who start their racing careers in the Mini Dwarfs, Galloway is waiting for the day when she can move up into, perhaps, a Junior Sport Compact car. "I'm still a bit too young yet, but when I get old enough I know I want to race in a bigger car," Galloway commented at the trophy ceremonies.

Rideout made plentiful use of the caution flag early as during the Street Stock feature the bumping and banging reached almost epic proportions. Torrance's Dan Queener and Whittier's Tim Foster raced hard during the feature, to the point where both wound up losing significant portions of skin from the sides of their cars.

Both drivers carried on, though, with Foster exiting the track and returning with almost the entire right side of his car naked.

Queener was the eventual winner of the feature and that win, coupled with his earlier heat victory, gave him the sweep in the Street Stock division this week. Trona's Ken Gosnell and Riverside's Frank Warnke rounded out the top three positions in the feature.

A couple of guys from the Phoenix suburb of Surprise, Arizona came to town to shake things up a bit in the IMCA Modified division. George Fronsman and Shawn Zelenka took advantage of a couple of nights off from racing at their home track in the Phoenix area and finished one and three, respectively, in the Modified feature. Sandwiched between the visitors was IFS Racing's Wayne Francis who began the night third in points in the local IMCA chase. Apple Valley racers Tony Kinkade, Jr. and Mike "Woody" Sabers finished a respectable fourth and fifth in the feature.

In an earlier heat race it was Zelenka who took the win. This race saw the unusual sight of all three members of the IFS Racing team pitted against each other in the same event. Barstow's Roger Gordon, Victorville's Andy Moreton and Francis faced off against each other in the race that ended up with Francis edging out Gordon while Moreton was finishing in sixth place.

Like just about every racer who has raced here, both Fronsman and Zelenka commented that they really enjoyed the track and would be back again should their regular home schedules allow. Zelenka is currently first in points back home.

Next out on the track were the Super Streets and it was Oak Hills' Ralph Adams coming away with the win in the feature race. It was Apple Valley's Keith Prischman who came off the green flag with the early lead and it was Prischman who held off early challenges by Adams, Bakersfield Ralph Cooke and Barstow's Mike Milender.

It wasn't long before both Adams and Prischman found themselves in traffic caused by slower cars. Adams took the inside groove and found his way through the pack to eventually take the lead, but Prischman came back strong to challenge once again.

The white flag lap proved to be a sprint to the finish line and the race ended up with Adams leading both Prischman and Cooke across the finish line. Prior to this race Adams and Milender were locked in a battle for the top spot in the Super Street division with Cooke barking at their heels.

It was another night where Adams pulled a back-to-back double shift, jumping out of his IMCA Modified car and climbing into his Super Street machine for the feature in that division.

The CDCRA Dwarf main event turned out to be one of the most uneventful of the night's program, if any Dwarf contest could be described as "uneventful". The race attracted some new faces (and cars) to the track and it was Brian Drake, who came up from the southern town of Warner Springs to sweep the Dwarfs in the Pro Division. Finishing second to Drake was his brother Kevin, who hails from Aguanga. The third-place finisher in the feature was Riverside's Walt Boyd, a familiar face to those here, and it was Boyd who took home the gold in the CDCRA Senior Division. The Dwarf gang also welcomed Craig Clements from Palmdale and Brian Saxton from Mentone.

The popularity of the Figure 8 races here continues to pick up speed and the night's action finished up with another contest, this time among the higher-powered 8-cylinder cars.

By the time all the banging and bumping was done, Hesperia's Jeff Singer, driving his Super Street car, grabbed the win in a sprint to the finish line with Apple Valley's Randy Vogel. These drivers go all out to put on a great show for the fans that, as always, don't leave the stands until the very end. As always they are rewarded with a super performance by dedicated drivers who put their all into the contest. Hesperia's John Lewis came across the line in third place. The attrition rate in this event was high as there were barely five vehicles that somehow managed to finish the race on this night.

Two off-track performances should be noted here as well. First was the stirring rendition of the National Anthem by local radio personality Barb Stanton. Stanton, who kicked off a brand new online talk show today, is an accomplished singer with numerous performances to her credit.

Mention also need to be made of the excellent announcing job done by local racer Joe Pasquale from Phelan who filled in for vacationing Track Announcer "DG" Gross. Joe is usually found behind the wheel of his own Sport Compact Senior racecar but shifted gears on this night to call the races for the fans in the stands.

The Modifieds and Dwarfs will be back on the track on August 4th as the Raceway finishes up a string of seven consecutive weekends of racing that began way back on June 21st. The 360/410 Sprints will also be back, along with Street Stocks and Senior Sport Compacts.

Press Release

Santa Maria, CA - July 28, 2007...Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit/VRA Grand Slam Sprint Cars showed up 50 strong for the running of the CCIS Information Solutions sponsored event Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway. The sprinters were joined by IMCA Modifieds and Mini Stocks.

*Eric Severson, of Torrance, came out on top in qualifying with a lap of 14.708 seconds but it was Josh Ford, of Camarillo, who came out on top in the 30-lap "A" main event. Ford started outside of row one and led every lap to move into a tie for the lead in the Grand Slam point standings. The race went well until the 21st circuit when things came to a grinding halt with a red flag for a three car pileup exiting turn two, and another for a two-car tangle on the restart. All five drivers walked away and the race went on without serious incident until the final lap. Danny Sheridan was running second going into the last two turns of the final lap, when Atascadero's Greg Porte made an inside move on the Santa Maria driver going into turn three, their wheel touched, and Sheridan went flipping up to the wall as the checkers waived for Ford. Sheridan too was uninjured. Porte finished second, followed by Ventura's Jimmy Crawford, Kerman's Davey Pombo, and Grand Slam co-point leader Greg Taylor of Ojai. Porte and Chris Wakim, of Simi Valley, captured 12-lap "B" main events and 10-lap heat race wins went to Pombo, Taylor, Jimmy Thompson, of Grover Beach; Hobie Conway, of Ventura; and Brent Camarillo of Camarillo.

*IMCA Modifieds were led to the checkers for the first time this season by Kenny Kirkpatrick, of Nipomo, in their 20-lap feature event. Kirkpatrick took the lead on lap 4 and never looked back. Danny Lauer, of Santa Maria, nailed down second place, followed by three more Santa Maria drivers: Jacob Jones, point leader Tim Breshears, and Josh Vogt. Breshears and Chad Weber, of Arroyo Grande, won the 8-lap heat races.

*Mini Stocks had a spirited 20-lap feature event leading to Justin Marsh's second win of the season. The Nipomo driver took the lead from Justin Crockett, of Arroyo Grande, on lap 18 to lead the final three laps for the victory. Matt Sweeney, of Van Nuys, was third behind Crockett with Mike Weigel, of Lompoc, fourth and R.J. Shoemaker, of San Miguel, fifth. Crockett's runner-up finish moved him to within 15 points of Arroyo Grande's Ken Kehs for the championship points lead. Eight-lap heat races were won by Crockett and Ben Caswell of Santa Barbara.

* Next Saturday night Late Model Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, Super Streets and Factory Stocks take over the 1/3-mile oval. For the youngsters the annual Mid-State Bank and Trust nickel scramble for kids under 42 inches tall will be held. Ticket will cost $14.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors (65+), $3.00 for children 6 to 12, 5 and under free. Santa Maria Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on Hutton Road.

Two out of Four for Stephens
By Sharyn Bragg

Young Kent Stephens of Modesto was the best of the best this evening as he won his second race in the NCMA Select Series at Chowchilla Speedway. The fourth race in the Select Series is giving Stephens the chance to show what he knows. He tamed the wild track at Rattlesnake Raceway, Fallon, Nevada and came back to grab the win at Chowchilla to show he’s got the stuff!

Two heats were run with NCMA’s Rob Hammond finishing first, Dave Press, second, David Goodwill, third and T. J. Smith finishing fourth. The second heat had Stephens taking the win, Dan Gonderman, current points’ leader in the Select Series, second, Bill Macedo, third, and Denny Burrell, fourth.

Rob Hammond, who has been posting his best season to date with NCMA, pulled a straight up start which put him on the pole. Stephens sat the shotgun. Press, who has had more than one win on the Chowchilla dirt, started the inside second row, Gonderman outside and Goodwill was number five to go. The first lap brought out the first caution flag. Cameron Beard started a spinout, Ed Amador spun out to avoid hitting Beard and Keith Shipherd jumped a wheel and broke his power steering to put him on the hook too early in the race. About the halfway mark, Jimmy Lavell after sitting out the heats because of a leaky power steering pump had to give up his run, as fluid was coming out and not doing what it was supposed to be doing. Doug Gandy, Jr. pulled off several laps later with problems after posting his best finish at Kings Speedway, Hanford several weeks ago. Hammond made a real run for the money and it took Stephens awhile to gain the lead. Hammond was still second for the evening. Press finished third. Goodwill who is finally beginning to look like he’s got a handle on it, took fourth and Gonderman rounded out the top five.

NCMA has cancelled it Select Series race Saturday, August 4th at Hanford. This Select Series race is rescheduled for Chowchilla on August 25th. Pavement will rule the next running for NCMA as they return to the “Fastest Half Mile in the West” Altamont Motorsports Park, Tracy, and CA. on Saturday, August 11th.

Summary:

Heat I-Hammond, Press, Goodwill, TJ Smith, Beard, Amador, Bill Hopper.

Heat II-Stephens, Gonderman, Macedo, Burrell, Gandy,Jr., Shipherd.

Smith Wins at Waynesfield
By Blake Lirette

Second class for the evening would be the Non-Wing Sprint and with rain all around in the state of Indiana a few of the regulars from other tracks came to play nice with our own guys that race weekly at Waynesfield. Taking the early ten lap wins were Corey Smith, Shane Cottle, Jon Stanbrough, and Dustin Smith.

Starting on the front row would be Dustin Smith and Jon Stanbrough and the fight for $1200 started early with Jon streaking out to the early lead over Corey Smith who wanted to protect his “home turf”. One lap in Zac Osborn stopped on the front stretch fearing he was on fire getting out of the car quickly, luckily he wasn’t. The top-five at this point was Jon Stanbrough, Corey Smith, Dustin Smith, Shane Cottle, and Joss Moffatt. After the race restarted Jon continued his lead with Corey staying close the whole time and brother Dustin having his own battle with Shane Cottle for the third spot. At the half-way mark the 14 of Stanbrough began to pull away looking like the 23rd win of the season was just ten laps away. Corey Smith, and for that matter Dustin and Shane Cottle as well were having an easier time in lapped traffic and that brought them back up to the leader along with some hard driving. Then the storyline was set, 18 laps in the feature the 26 of Cody White stopped in turn one with a flat left rear and third place Dustin Smith had contact with him nearly ending his night as well.

The top-five at this point was still Jon Stanbrough, Corey Smith, Dustin Smith, Shane Cottle, and Joss Moffatt. With the white flag in hand Jon pushed up in turn three giving Corey Smith, who hounded Jon the entire race, the needed space for the lead. Drag racing down the front stretch the Smith machine took the lead and then the win. The rest of the top-five were Stanbrough, Shane Cottle, Dustin Smith, and Joss Moffatt.

“I really wanted this win tonight.” “I had the whole family here, my wife, son, and daughter and we got rained out at Cedar Point yesterday.” “The track was really fast and racy tonight.” “Big thanks to Smith Racing and Shearer Business Products for their help this year!”
