For Immediate Release

CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINT CAR CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE DECIDED AT THIS WEEKEND’S OVAL NATIONALS!

(Placentia, CA, October 29, 2013)  The California Lightning Sprint Car Series will wrap up its regular season this Friday and Saturday Night, November 1st and 2nd, at the 18th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals at Perris Auto Speedway.  The two nights of racing will determine who takes home the championship.  Stephen Limon holds a precarious 29-point lead over Dan Hillberg heading into the final race.  Joining the CLS on the prestigious program will be the USAC/National and CRA Sprint Cars and The PAS Senior Sprints. Spectator gates will open at 4:00 PM on Friday and at 3:00 PM on Saturday.  In addition, the Oval Nationals 360 Championship will take place on Thursday, October 31st

Limon and Hillberg are quite opposites when it comes to their racing careers.  Limon, an Army veteran who lives in Corona, began his racing with the CLS in 2011 and won the Rookie of the Year Award.  Hillberg’s career spans back to the 1970’s when he began racing Midgets in the now defunct USRC Midget Series and progressed to Sprint Cars with both SCRA and USAC before settling into the CLS several years ago.

The first race of the season was held at Perris on March 9th and Hillberg won his lone main event of the year, but Limon, due to preliminary action that night, came out with a 3-point lead over Hillberg in the championship standings. Since that night, Limon has been on top of the standings in all but two races when Hillberg commandeered the lead in the first half of the season.

Four races ago, it appeared as though Limon was putting the finishing touches on the championship when he advanced his advantage over Hillberg to 76-points in the standings.   However, Hillberg began a late season charge and has chopped 47-points from Limon’s once dominant lead and only trails by a mere 29-points heading into this weekend.

As stated, Hillberg’s lone win this year came at the season opener at Perris in March.  Limon has notched two wins.  The first came at Ventura in March and his second victory came at Orange Show Speedway in June.

Besides the battle for the championship, there are two other tight battles in the top ten in the standings.  Lakewood’s Tom Downing is third, but he is only 17-points ahead of defending series champ Bobby Michnowicz of Lomita.  A few spots behind, Murrieta’s Zach Zauss has a 15-point lead over Silver Lake’s Jeff Dyer in the battle for sixth.  The entire top 10 in points is listed further down in this release.

Both Friday and Saturday will be full shows with qualifying, heats and main events.  Late last week, Mike Grosswendt from All Coast Construction announced several bonus payments into this weekend’s festivities.  Included was an extra $1,000.00 for Saturday’s CLS main event.  The winner will receive a $500.00 bonus!  Second place will earn an extra $300.00 and third place will pocket an additional $200.00.  This is all on top of their regular purse.

While this weekend’s event will wrap up the point paying portion of the 2013 CLS season, an additional race has been added at the fairgrounds track in El Centro on November 16.

In 2013, cars in the CLS are carrying transponders and they will qualify at all events.  The driver with the most fast qualifying times at the end of the season will win the “Cold Fire West Qualifying Championship” and will pocket an extra $500.00.  Another new sponsor to the series this season is Extreme Muffler.  They will sponsor the “Extreme Muffler Heat Race Championship” and the driver with the most heat race wins will collect a $500.00 check.

The California Lightning Sprint Car Series would like to thank series sponsors Christian Stover Foundation, Rod End Supply, Cold Fire West, Sander Engineering, Saldana Race Products, DK Machining and Fabrication, Keizer Aluminum Wheels, Hoosier Racing Tires, Circle Track Performance, Extreme Muffler, Performance by Rosson Racing, Electro Tech Powder Coating, Oil Twins Amsoil and Haul Ass Fuel.  If you or your company would like to become part of the California Lightning Series for the 2013 season, please call Dan Hillberg at: (714) 719-0295.
