Eleven-year-old Michael Kofoid makes Sprint Car history Saturday night at Reno Tahoe Fernley Speedway

By Gary Thomas

Fernley, Nevada – October 8, 2013…Finishing off the season at the Reno Tahoe Fernley Speedway young Michael “Buddy” Kofoid raced to a runner up finish this past Saturday night during the track’s annual two-night “Shootout” event.

Kofoid is an 11-year-old Outlaw Kart star from Penngrove, California and has multiple championships in Karts during his young career that started at the age of five. This season has been his first campaign driving a Sprint Car and it has come while competing with the KWS Lights division for RTF Speedway promoter Dan Simpson in the DES Racing No. 3 Sprint Car.

Kofoid went into the two-night show maintaining the points lead and at the end of the weekend he came out as the inaugural KWS Lights champion. At the “Shootout” the youngster captured his heat race on Friday night and then drove to a runner up finish in the grand finale on Saturday. On the year at the 3/8 mile oval “Buddy” brought home four main event victories and scored eight podium finishes throughout the season.

“It was a lot of fun this year racing at Fernley for Dan Simpson Racing and was a great way to get started in Sprint Car racing,” commented Kofoid. “I’m really excited to bring home the championship and definitely have to thank my whole team and family for supporting me all year long. And of course I need to give a big thanks to Dan Simpson for the opportunity and allowing me to drive his race car this season.”

Team owner Dan Simpson was also very happy to see Kofoid bring home the inaugural KWS Lites title. “Buddy is just a tremendous talent and it was a pleasure having him at Fernley this year driving in our stable. The first time I saw him practice a Sprint Car I was amazed at his car control and just how much finesse he had at such a young age. He certainly didn’t disappoint this season and it was a joy to watch him grow as the year went on.”

Kofoid’s website is currently under construction and once complete can be viewed at http://www.michaelkofoid.com/index.html

Another article about this mentioned that the boy started practicing/testing in a spec sprint at age 8.... WOW

Loose is when you hit the wall with the rear of the
car, tight is when you hit the wall with the front of
the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and
torque is how far you move the wall.
