Young Wins NCRA Sport Mod Finale While Harrison Claims Title!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Park City, Kansas – October 5, 2013 - David Young of Nickerson, Kansas made his first appearance with the tour a memorable one as he picked up his first career Bob Howard PDC and MOPAR National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Precise Racing Products sport mod feature and a $1000 paycheck Saturday night at 81 Speedway in Park City. While Young was celebrating his laurels, Mark Harrison and crew celebrated a championship as he became the fourth different tour champion in the tours five year history.
Former two-time tour champion Chad McNamara and Harrison started on the front row for the twenty-five lap feature with Harrison taking the lead as the green flag fell. McNamara, Ross McCartney, Cleo Adams and A.J. Brochu gave chase with McNamara right on the leader’s rear bumper.
Harrison worked the top side of the track while McNamara the bottom with both drivers racing side by side several times before McNamara finally took control and took the lead on lap 6. At the same moment tenth starting Young worked his way past Harrison, who would be fading from the lead pack with a broken brake caliper, adding drama to the point chase as he came into the feature finale with a 45 point advantage over Todd Decker.
Young would pull even with McNamara for the lead on lap eight and would make the winning pass coming out of turn two down the backstretch.
Cautions would wave on laps 8; 9 and 11, the last one with McNamara slowing to a stop on the backstretch.
Brochu would be even with the leader on the double file restart but that didn’t stop Young as he jumped back out into the lead and was never challenged the last half of the feature. He would go on to take the victory by a half straightaway over Brochu.
Fifth starting Decker made things interesting in the point chase as he came on strong the last half of the feature to finish third. Adams and McCartney would round out the top five.
Harrison would settle for the sixth place finish and that would be enough to pick up the series championship by just 25 points over Decker.
“I had to look at the big picture,” said Harrison after the races. “We sure wanted to pick up that win but I knew something was wrong with the car so I just did my best to finish. I really have to thank my crew and my sponsors as this deal takes a team effort. Not just one person.” His sponsors include: Dale’s Electric, O’Dell’s Automotive, Westerberg Applications, Folks Machine along with his Mopar powered Western Flyer sport mod chassis.
Harrison and the rest of the top ten, along with rookie of the year winner Kenny Morris, will be honored at the series year end banquet in late January.
The two, eight lap heat races for the fifteen car field were won by McNamara and Harrison.
