CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINT CARS HEAD TO BAKERSFIELD FOR FINAL TIME IN 2013!
(Placentia, CA, September 25, 2013) The fight for the historic 2013 California Lightning Sprint Car Series 20th championship will continue this Saturday night, September 28th, when the series makes its final appearance of the season at “The West’s Fastest 1/3 of a Mile High Banked Clay Oval,” the Bakersfield Speedway. Joining the CLS on the program will be the Modifieds, Sports Mods, American Stocks and the Mini Dwarfs. Spectator gates will open at 4:00 PM and the first race will be at 6:00.
Corona’s Steven Limon, who has led the championship standings most of the campaign, heads Placentia’s Dan Hillberg by 62-points with only four races remaining in 2013. However, Hillberg shaved 14-points off Limon’s advantage at the last race at Perris Auto Speedway on September 14th. Lomita’s Bobby Michnowicz, the defending series champion, comes into Saturday’s race third in the standings. Lakewood’s Tom Downing, is fourth, 39-markers behind Michnowicz, and second year CLS driver Damon Arnett of San Diego is fifth.
In the CLS first three appearances at Bakersfield this season, Michnowicz has two wins and Kingsbourg’s Doug Nunes has one. Overall Michnowicz sits on top of the 2013 CLS victory list with six victories. Limon and Nunes are the only other drivers on the circuit with more than one win and each of them has two. Limon’s wins have come at Ventura and Orange Show. Besides his win at Bakersfield, Nunes also has a victory at Santa Maria.
With the days and nights growing cooler and the leaves on the trees changing colors, it is sending a signal that the 2013 CLS season is fast approaching its conclusion. After Saturday’s race at Bakersfield the series will only have three races to go. October 19th at the beach side Ventura Raceway and November 1st and 2nd at the 18th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals presented by All Coast Construction.
For 2013, cars in the CLS will be carrying transponders and they will qualify at all events. The driver with the most fast qualifying times at the end of the season will win the “Cold Fire West Qualifying Championship” and will pocket an extra $500.00. Another new sponsor to the series this season is Extreme Muffler. They will sponsor the “Extreme Muffler Heat Race Championship” and the driver with the most heat race wins will collect a $500.00 check.
