Becker takes the win and the point lead in penultimate Civil War
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA- Just one week before the season finale, the point chase in the Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Sprint Car Series underwent a dramatic shuffle this past Saturday night at Petaluma Speedway. With only the Tribute to Al Hinds $3000 to win finale left ahead this Saturday, former two-time Civil War Series Champion Sean Becker of Roseville has moved into the point lead after winning Saturday night at the famed 3/8 mile Petaluma Speedway.
Saturday's race was looking to be a duel of former champions on the tacky coastal clay as Becker led the field just three positions ahead of Forsberg. However, as Forsberg went for pass for the third position trouble broke out and he took a wild ride along the tough Petaluma Speedway wall and ended his night early.
Becker started Saturday's feature event in the third place starting position. Driving the Dan Monhoff owned #35, the driver known as "The Shark" muscled his way into the lead, passing pole sitter Nathan Washam and Jamie Duff to take the top spot.
Once in front of the field, Becker drove a solid line to maintain his lead while Princeton's Mason Moore and Penngrove's Alissa Geving worked their way to podium worthy positions with Forsberg in their wake until the accident that delayed the 30-lap feature and ended the former champions night early. Moore started the A- Feature in the 8th position to finish in second place. Geving started fifth to take third over Bradley Terrell and Nathan Washam that rounded out the top five.
In preliminary action on Saturday night, the B-feature was claimed by local driver Brett Rollag over Mike Benson, Steven Tiner, Jake Haulot and Jason Toft. Heat races for Saturday's event that drew 33 teams were won by Chase Johnson, Stan Yockey, Matt Peterson and Geoff Ensign. Moore was the fast qualifier of the night over Rollag and Haulot.
Now the 2013 Civil War Series will head into its final round of the season with a tight battle for the series championship at Placerville Speedway this Saturday night. The event is the $3000 to win Tribute to Al Hinds event presented by Thompsons Auto Centers. In addition to the $1000 bonus awarded by Ron Thompson, this event will be a full day for racing fans with a big race car show and fan BBQ at Thompsons Auto Centers from 11 a.m. until 2.p.m.
Families and fans of all ages are invited to this event that benefits the Boys and Girls Club of El Dorado County with Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Refreshments along with some 20 race cars and drivers on hand for autographs and goodies for the kids, live music and more. Thompsons Auto Center is located at 126 Forni Road in Placerville, just around the corner from the fairgrounds next to Thompson's Toyota.
Saturday's Civil War event will be the final Civil War Sprint Car Series event under the promotion of Handy Racing Promotions. John Prentice, who operates Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, will assume management of the traveling series with the consultion of Handy for the first year. The event also marks the final race of the year at Placerville Speedway which will resume in April of 2014 under the promotion of Handy Racing Promotions who recently signed a three year contract with the El Dorado County Fairgrounds to continue operation of the facility that first opened in 1965.
