CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINTS CARS AT THE PAS ON SATURDAY!
(Placentia, CA, September 9, 2013) After four weeks off, the California Lightning Sprint Car Series returns to action this Saturday night, September 14th, at the Glenn Howard Memorial at Perris Auto Speedway. After Saturday’s race, which will also see the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, PAS Senior and Young Gun Sprint Cars in action with the CLS, there will only be four races remaining on the 2013 CLS calendar.
The 2013 championship is going to come down to a battle between two drivers. Corona’s Steve Limon, in only his third season of competition with the CLS, has expanded his advantage in the historic 20th CLS season to 76-points over Placentia’s Dan Hillberg. Bobby Michnowicz, the 2012 champion from Lomita, is third in the standings, but he is 301-points behind the current leader. Lakewood’s Tom Downing and Zach Zauss of Murrieta round out the top five.
Saturday’s race will be the sixth of the season for the CLS at “The Southern California Home of Major League Sprint Car Racing.” Hillberg won the season opener on the famous Riverside County clay oval at the start of March and 2010 series champ Jarrett Kramer of Spring Valley won in April. Since then all three main event winners’ trophies have headed to the Michnowicz household. Bobby Michnowicz has two of the wins (last two in a row) and his teenage son has won. The elder Michnowicz also has two wins at Bakersfield and one at the Orange Show this year. Limon, the 2011 CLS Rookie of the Year, and Kingsburg’s Doug Nunes each have two wins victories thus far in 2013. Limon’s wins have come at Ventura and the Orange Show. Nunes has claimed his triumphs at Bakersfield and Santa Maria.
After Saturday’s race at The PAS, the CLS will journey to the Bakersfield Speedway on September 28th and the ocean side Ventura Raceway on October 19th. It will close the 2013 campaign at The PAS with two shows during the 18th running of the Budweiser Oval Nationals Presented by All Coast Construction on November 1st and 2nd.
For 2013, cars in the CLS will be carrying transponders and they will qualify at all events. The driver with the most fast qualifying times at the end of the season will win the “Cold Fire West Qualifying Championship” and will pocket an extra $500.00. Another new sponsor to the series this season is Extreme Muffler. They will sponsor the “Extreme Muffler Heat Race Championship” and the driver with the most heat race wins will collect a $500.00 check.
