Hasn't anyone told him that is too old to qualify for next year's X Games?

Proof once more that anything that can happen will happen in Sprint car racing.

proof that racetracks need to be PROACTIVE in ensuring there are no obstacles for cars to hit and become airborne (what if that pile was outside turn 4 instead and it sent him into the stands....

thank god it was not an excavator, tractor or some other piece of equipment. how many tracks do we go to and see pieces of equipment sitting in areas where they shoudn't be. proof of why tracks should keep equipment and other objects far away from track. you never know what may happen.

That guy has had no luck all season long. When it rains it pours. Hopefully it turns around for him before the season is over.
Never hit stationary objects!

Someone else hit a tree there last night. Why is that end of the track without barriers to keep cars from leaving the place and hitting whatever happens to be out there? There's no reason for it other than just irresponsible track management. Do they not care what can happen to cars and more importantly, drivers? Apparently not. It's a miracle more dirt track racers aren't hurt. Racing is dangerous enough without stupid stuff like this. It's sad.

Outside of the leaving of stuff in the line of fire, believe it or not the reason some tracks don't have crash walls in place on one or more turns is to save equipment. Going out into a open area in most cases is a lot cheaper than tearing down the wall. I have mixed feeling about this myself, but more than a few teams and drivers like it.

You are so right. Just ask Danny Lasoski about the CAT (Caterpillar) he hit the Monday night before the Knoxville Nationals in 1989 when he was trying to be another cherry in the basket. Not good. Steve should have just run over the driver that spun in front on him. But instead he tried to avoid him and it end up costing him in the end.

I watched it several times. To me it looks like Steve didn't see the dirt hill, with it all covered with grass. He must have hit it and went" What the hell". Steve has told us all his hearing and vision isn't what it used to be.

I took some measurements, via google earth...
The distance between the point where Steve left the track and the pile of dirt, is less than 100 feet. When your traveling 100 miles per hour, or 146 feet per second, there's not much time to alter your course. I think it's unfair to suggest that Steve's eye sight failed him.
The big question is, why in the hell does the Cottage Grove Speedway have a RAMP erected on the South side of turns 1 and 2? The only thing protecting the drivers from the scoreboard; the trees, and the antenna is a RAMP and a gaurd rail. Absuloute ludicrous; completely unacceptable!
I've said it once, but I'll say it again... All these race tracks are crying about poor car counts, yet their facilities continue to destroy race cars. If it's not a tire barrier, its a RAMP. Good grief!

That pile of dirt is the bottom part of a cell tower. They put the scoreboard there also.
He hit the far left side of the pile where you can't see the pole in the video. It is pretty close!

Here is a Video of the turn 1/2 area. Yes the video is of Non-wing Cars.
The pile of dirt is infont of the scoring pylon and the cell tower is behind a fence and UTE tires to keep cars out of the cell tower.

I was there for this race (WOO) on Wed.
A friend and I talked about how unsafe this place looked and I even said that it looked like a ramp if anyone went out there towards the scoreboard. (sure enough it happened)
-I went as far as to say the trees were too close (again it happened) I went out to look at the tree and as he flipped, he hit the tree about ten feet up. You could hear the sound when he hit and some branches broke and fell down about 3 seconds after he hit.
-I also said the catch fence wouldn't stop much (thank god it didn't happen) Although someone hit the front streatch wall a ton coming out of 4.
Mr Madson sure hit the 3 turn hard that if he had air time would have been bad. He hit the end of the fence that had a big tractor tire in front of it. Stopped in a hurry.
Cottage Grove is not your normal track-Wild little place, and its in Johnny Gibsons top ten race tracks.
Later, Jerseysprintnut

I don't disagree and DO like open areas but there's a big difference between going out into an open area with nothing to hit versus jumping a ramp that turns you over or hitting a tree. It looks like an obstacle course outside turn 1 out there and that's just ridiculous.

The older I get the more I dont care for tracks that dont have a wall in the turns. I went to a track last month that didnt (it was very close to home) same old stuff of cars falling off the track coming out of 2nd turn and every where else in the turns. Why track owners want to see there moist dirt being tossed clear out in the boonies is beyond me. I dont think its as safe either.
