HIGH FIVES FOR MURPHY
By Dan Fleisher

HANFORD, CA - JULY 21, 2007 --- Peter Murphy was giving the “high-fives” to everyone around him in victory circle after capturing SCRA’s (360 Sprint Car series) first-ever marathon 50-lap main event at Kings Speedway. As his hand was being thrust into the air to meet others, it also had another meaning; five-in-a-row at the Hanford, CA facility. His string started on May 5th and continued with victories on June 2nd and 23rd, July 7 and last evening.

Murphy started the feature on the outside of row one but was out-gunned into the first turn by 16-year-old Justyne Hamblin, who earned the pole by virtue of her win in the Dash. Rookie Hamblin held off the veteran Murphy until the fourth lap when she was passed, but, she wasn’t done yet. She re-passed Murphy on the next go-round only to lose the lead for good one lap later. From that point forward, Murphy cruised to victory, building up a straightaway lead on several occasions, interrupted only by yellow flags.

As the field reached lap 10, Murphy was being trailed by Hamblin, Greg Bragg, Michael Faccinto, Myles Bishop, Rusty Carlile, Danny Faria Jr, Jonathan Logan, Jeff Gardner and Richard Harvey Jr. At that point, John Niggli spun bringing out the caution. As the field bunched up for the restart and received the green, Bragg made a neat move and passed Hamblin. Once again however, Hamblin showed her tenacity by re-passing Bragg but yellow number two, caused by Logan’s stalling on the backstretch, negated the pass before a full lap was completed.

At the halfway point, Carlile moved into third after some ferocious battles with Faccinto, Bishop and Hamblin. Another yellow was displayed on lap 36 when Faria came to a stop in turn two, giving started Lee Jaskowiak the opportunity to display the red so the field could refuel their thirsty machines.

When the green was displayed once again, Carlile remained in third until lap 40 when he passed Bragg for the runner-up spot. Bragg, in only his second start in the No. 11 machine after replacing Kiwi Alexander, re-passed within the same lap and looked strong for a second-place finish. Murphy’s young teammate Faccinto was on the move however, passing Carlile for third on lap 42. Two consecutive yellows were waved on laps 46 as first, Bishop looped his machine on the front straightaway, and then on the restart when he and Hamblin tangled in turns one and two, ending both their evenings. With only four laps remaining, Faccinto wasted little time and passed Bragg a short two laps later to make it a one-two finish for Team Tarlton.

By virtue of his victory and the absence of Davey Pombo, who was running in the mid-west with USAC, Murphy took over the top spot in the drivers' standings as noted below.

Rounding out the top-ten in the feature were Carlile, Gardner, Faria, who made a nice recovery after stalling earlier, Niggli, Iturriria, Harvey and Dave Knott. Heat victories were recorded by Faccinto and Bishop, while Hamblin, as noted earlier, took her initial Dash victory of the year. Logan recorded his second consecutive quick qualifying time.

Grass Valley’s Mark Hall leads Chico Civil War event from start to finish
Series now heads to Petaluma Speedway tomorrow for ninth segment of 15 race campaign
by Bill Sullivan

CHICO, CA (7-20-07) - The Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Sprint Car Series returned to action Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico for the first of two back to back events at two different California race tracks this weekend. Friday night marked the eighth round of the 15 race series that will head to Petaluma in less than 24 hours for round nine of competition on Saturday night.

Veteran driver Mark Hall of Grass Valley led every lap of Friday’s 30-lap A-feature to post his first series victory of the year. With the victory, Hall became the seventh different driver to win a Civil War race in eight events this season to improve his seventh place position in the series point standings.

With the waving of the green flag on Friday night Hall took the lead off the outside of the front row over pole sitter Brett Rollag of Rohnert Park. As early as the second lap Hall distanced himself by nearly three car lengths over Rollag. With five laps complete the former Marysville track champion was already working his way into heavy lapped traffic.

With seven laps down the red flag waved when the lapped car of Stephen Allard drifted off of turn three and four and pulled back onto the racing surface in turn four directly in the path of Rollag who was racing in the second place. Rollag collided into Allard and flipped several times down the front stretch. A chain reaction ensued behind Rollag sending 17th place starter Mark Tabor Jr. and Chad Compton upside down as well. The incident drew a lengthy red flag but all drivers were uninjured in the incident.

Once the event saw the green flag again, Hall resumed his lead with fourth place starter Robbie Whitchurch of Chico in second place only to see the red flag again when Mike Henry of Sacramento went upside down when he was struck by Whitchurch in turn four. The incident caused a flat tire on Whitchurch’s machine and sent Henry to the rear of the field as well after quick repairs.

On the second attempt at a restart Hall was being trailed by Andy Forsberg who started sixth. Forsberg took the high line in the first set of turns under green. Forsberg’s error allowed Herman Klein of Sacramento and Placerville’s Andy Gregg to take the second and third positions.

With 13 laps in the event Hall reached lapped traffic once again and began distancing himself from Klein just as the race under went caution again. The yellow flag flew when Jeff Delte climbed over the right rear tire of fourth place runner Greg DeCaires of Elk Grove and collided into the front stretch wall.

With a little more than half of the event to go, the restart saw Hall power ahead of Klein. While Andy Gregg and DeCaires battled ahead of Forsberg. With 21 laps into the event early crash victim Stephen Allard moved back into the top five. Allard rallied back from the 21st position and was closing in on Forsberg in traffic just as a final yellow flag flew on the 28th lap to pause the field.

On the restart of the event, Hall set the pace with two lapped cars between second place runner Herman Klein and himself. Andy Gregg restarted in the third position followed by DeCaires, Forsberg and Allard. Hall powered ahead of the field while Forsberg overtook DeCaires. Klein drove off the track surface to draw one final yellow flag and relinquish second place to Gregg for the restart.

On the restart, Hall powered ahead while Allard overtook Forsberg and closed in on Gregg on the white flag lap. At the checkered flag Hall picked up his first Civil War victory of the year followed by Gregg. Allard finished an impressive third place, recovering from his early race mishap. DeCaires finished in fourth followed by Wallace

“The crew did a great job, everything went our way,” said Hall. “The track was a bit rough in places but it was still really racey. I knew Andy (Gregg) was back there, I didn’t realize I had a good there a few times so I stayed on the gas hard the whole time. I just need to thank everyone that helps me do this each week.”

For Gregg, Friday’s finish was his second top two outing in two straight Civil War events. Gregg recently won the Civil War feature in Marysville two weeks ago, his first career win in California.

“The track was rough on us tonight,” said Gregg. “But I think running up here on Friday nights has helped me a lot. If I hadn’t been racing up here every week I probably would have been running in the back of this deal tonight. I knew Stephen Allard was going to make a run on that last lap. I’ve learned a lot about this track from that guy and he did everything he could .”
“I feel really bad for what I caused on the red with Brett Rollag tonight,” said Allard, who was greeted by kudos from his hometown crowd. “I was just trying to get back on the racing surface and not cause a yellow flag, that was totally my fault. We got back in the race and we were able to do a good job though. I just did everything I could tonight. Andy Gregg really held his line out there tonight and I gave it my all but just couldn’t get around him.”

With 41 cars on hand Friday night, preliminary competition consisted of four ten lap heat races, a C-feature and a B-feature, all leading up to the 30-lap A-feature event worth $2000 to the winner.

In Friday’s B-feature, Billy Wallace was the first driver to the checkered flag followed by DeCaires, Colby Wiesz, Jeff Delte and Chad Compton. James Sweeney of Placerville led every lap of the 10-lap C-feature Friday night to transfer in the 12-lap B-feature. Sweeney was followed across the line by Heath Hall, Josh Keheley and Dustin Baxter.

In heat race competition Mark Hall won the opening heat of the night and share the glory with heat race two winner Mark Tabor Jr., Mike Monahan and Jimmy Trulli. In qualifying, Forsberg posted the fastest lap with a 12:316. Forsberg was trailed by Herman Klein, Billy Wallace, Ricky Wondergem and Greg DeCaires.

The Civil War Series will now head to Petaluma Speedway tomorrow, July 21 for the ninth round of competition and the first appearance of the year on the 3/8 mile dirt oval. Tim Kaeding leads all 30 laps to win at Watsonville!
by Kelly Buchanan (for Gary Thomas)

Friday, July 20 Results

CHICO, CA (7-20-07) - After having to miss two races last weekend due to injury, Tim Kaeding was back in form with a dominating performance at Watsonville's Ocean Speedway Friday night by winning his 4th th GSC race this year. He started off the night by setting fast time, getting 3rd in the heat race, and 2nd in the dash. He was challenged at times by Brandon Wimmer when lapped traffic came into play and he also used quick thinking to avoid a car that had just spun out. Brandon Wimmer and Brent Kaeding swapped places a few times between 2nd and 3rd, but the numerous yellows made getting into lapped traffic difficult.

One of the surprises of the night was young Evan Suggs who won the dash and started on the front row. This is his 1st year in a 410 sprint car racing and he has been starting to come on strong in the last part of the season. Unfortunately, Suggs good start ended when he had car trouble late in the race and couldn't rejoin the field. Jerry Bonnema was also impressive in qualifying, qualifying 3rd and making it into the dash. The hard chargers of the night were Jason Statler, Ronnie Day, and Sean Becker. Jason Statler started 10th and made it as far as 5th when he got a flat tire and had to go to the back, Ronnie Day started 11th and finished 5th, while Sean Becker started 13th and got up to 6th.

There were just 3 sprint car heat races with the winners being Jason Statler, Ronnie Day, and Trevor Green. The track did not allow for much passing during the heat races, but did come in for the A main. The top ten finishers in the main event were Tim Kaeding, Brandon Wimmer, Brent Kaeding, Willie Croft, Ronnie Day, Sean Becker, Trevor Green, Jason Statler, Jerry Bonnema, and Brett Miller. For complete results and up to date points, log onto www.johnpadjenmotorsports.com. A familiar driver not in the lineup was Jonathan Allard, who decided to try his luck at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Washington for the $10,092 Brownfield Memorial race, only to get rained out. They will try to race again up there tonight, weather permitting.

With the GSC series coming to an end next weekend, there is the always exciting two day show at Chico's Silver Dollar Speedway. Competing for the title of King of California are 12 time champion Brent Kaeding and 2005 GSC Champion Sean Becker. Both drivers have been racing very well lately and are always consistently at the front of the pack or winning races. Brent Kaeding has 8 wins this year, but still needs one more GSC race win this year to surpass the record of 8 held by Tim Kaeding. Sean Becker has 2 wins in GSC competition this year and races very well at his home track of Silver Dollar. With the points being as close as they are, anything can happen next weekend and there should be great racing with a high car count. Gates open at 6 pm both nights next weekend, so come out and enjoy watching the best 410 drivers in California!

CLAYTON WRAPS UP INDIANA SPEEDWEEK
DARLAND TAKES TITLE PACKAGE

By Eldon and Oleva Butcher

Haubstadt, IN - July 21. Daron Clayton won the USAC sanctioned Indiana Sprint Week finale held at Tri-State Speedway Saturday night. The Missouri born, Indianapolis based driver prevailed in the 30 lap feature and earned the victory with just his third start in the Walker/Guiducci entry. Clayton was offered the ride for the final weekend of ISW action and at Haubstadt, where he has had phenomenal success, he took on all challenges and all challengers in an exciting night of USAC Sprint Car racing.

Trouble presented itself early when Clayton's car overturned in a wide pack of cars exiting turn two at the start of the second heat race. Repairs followed after a tow to the pits and he responded with a win in the B-main. He joined the feature line-up as the fifth starter in a whopping 25 car field which included three added provisions including ISW Points leader Dave Darland as well as Darren Hagen.

Clayton was fourth after a lap, third by lap 7, second by lap 11, and in the lead on lap 23. Ricky Steinhouse Jr. of Olive Branch, MS, led all of those early laps and continued after the pass at a desperate pace behind Clayton to place a strong second. Chad Boespflug finished third with a solid performance after starting on the pole. Jon Stanbrough would emerge from the thick pack of cars hunting top five spots to claim fourth. Dustin Morgan was fifth in the team car to Clayton's 11D.

Clayton put down three complete doughnuts following the victory lap and before being pushed from the smoke and flying dirt to victory lane. The fans in turn two had the ringside seat. But everyone got a big thank you! "I love this place! I love the fans who come out to root me on! This was a tough race but not as tough as the one with Stanbrough a few weeks ago." One final thank you was for Jeff Walker. "Jeff has been great in offering me this ride."

The top ten included Shane Cottle in sixth followed by Levi Jones, Mat Neely, Hunter Schuerenberg, and Cole Whitt. Dave Darland finished eleventh to preserve the points lead and earn him a third Indiana Sprint Week Title. Darland collected 2 victories, 2 seconds, and a third in the package of 8 events held at the 6 tracks involved during the extended 11 day race week.

Fast qualifier for the program was Jerry Coons Jr. with a lap of 12.912 seconds. Danny Holtsclaw then won the Non Qualifiers Race between the 13 drivers who failed to qualify fast enough to make the heat race lineups. That gave 4 drivers another chance from the tail of four respective heat races. Two of those Kevin Swindell and Scotty Weir made the feature. Forty-five drivers had timed to begin the program.

John Memmer outraced Jesse Hockett and Jon Stanbrough in an exciting first heat. Levi Jones in the Tony Stewart sprinter finished ahead of Brady Bacon and Kevin Swindell, who together make up the Kasey Kahne team in heat two. Hud Cone squeezed out a victory at the line over Neil Shepherd in the third heat. Cole Whitt was quick in winning the fourth heat.

The B-main served to add the final six cars to the feature line-up. Kyle Wissmiller took the final spot using a last lap pass. Shane Cottle actually finished second to Daron Clayton in a strong field of hopefuls. Accidents produced two red flags and two yellow flags. Cars driven by Chris Windom and Shane Hollingsworth took the brunt of the damage in separate flips. Red flags in the feature allowed crews to quickly service cars on the track while damaged sprints were towed or pushed back to the pits. Those accidents eliminated five more cars from competition.

In the UMP modified feature John DeMoss passed Danny Claycomb on the third lap and maintained the lead for the remainder of the 25 lap event to claim the victory. Claycomb held off a charge by Everett Bradham to finish in second. Bradham who started 14th by virtue of a win in the consolation race took third. Tim Dierlam was fourth and Darrell McDowell moved up to fifth on the final circuit. A yellow flag brought about a green, white, checker finish with six cars in contention for the top spots. McDowell capitalized on the opportunity in passing Jesse Cramer who had run as high as third in the field.

Modified heat races produced three winners. Kyle Decker, Danny Claycomb, and John DeMoss ruled in those three preliminary events. Decker finished ninth in the 18 car feature which was interrupted 5 times by incidents bringing out yellow flags.

John Lowe "Sprints" His Way to Victory at Winston Speedway

Drivers can always tell you where and when they picked up their first main event win. For one Michigan Traditional Sprint Car Series driver he will remember Friday July 20th, 2007 and Winston Speedway. After nearly an hour and numerous cautions including a red flag John Lowe found him self on the front stretch celebrating his first sprint car win of his career.

The Michigan Traditional Sprint Car Series started their main event four different times before the first lap was taken off the record book. The longest stop in racing action happened when Muskegon driver Nate Bostrom rode up on top of another competitors wheel on the front stretch. Bostrom’s car flipped and twisted with a hard impact right in front of the stands. Bostrom’s hit was so hard his fuel cell came loose from his racecar. Bostrom was able to exit his car very gingerly on his own, but was taken by ambulance for further evaluation.

When racing action resumed it looked like Mike Astrouskas was going to lead from start to finish from his pole starting position. Astrouskas set a torrid pace on the low groove of the track while John Lowe and Nick Landon kept working the high groove. As laps wound down fans witnessed Lowe’s and Landon’s efforts come to life. With six laps to go Lowe, Astrouskas and Landon had the fans on their feet as they came out of turn two three abreast. By the time they completed the lap Astrouskas had fallen from first to third and Lowe and Landon were racing side by side.

Lowe finally gained a comfortable lead with three laps to go. Landon’s effort to grab the point away from Lowe resulted with him sliding to the top of the track in turn two on the white flag lap. Landon’s error cost him as Astrouskas took advantage grabbing the runner-up spot. Landon settled for third. Steve Irwin was fourth followed by Tim Evilizer.

Heat Race winners were Steve Irwin and Mike Astrouskas.

Marysville Raceway Park
Press Release 7.22.07
For immediate release
By Bob Burbach

Former Champ Stein last to 1st in sprints
Shelby, Luster back in victory lane in KKCY Cup
Figure 8-Slam-Bang success.

Marysville- 2005 “Wingless Warrior” Sprint Car Champ Steve Stein of Davis scored a fantastic feature event victory at Paul and Kathy Hawes’ Marysville Raceway Park Saturday. Yuba City’s Phillip Shelby was a rocket in the KKCY Street Stock feature and padded his point lead with an outstanding passing display. Robert Luster of Marysville was quick all night and won the KKCY Mini Stock main event that was peppered with drama both on and off the track. The Figure 8 event that capped the nights festivities was a rollicking good time that had the fans screaming for more.

The KKCY Country 103 Cup feature was presented first and it was worth the price of admission. 7th starting Phillip Shelby put on a driving clinic in his run to the front. In a race that saw few yellow flags, Shelby made the pass for the lead on Marysville’s Ryan McDaniel with a slick inside move off of turn 4. Shelby needed 14 of the 20 scheduled laps to get through the highly competitive field.

Rio Oso’s Jake Cavasos led the first few circuits that included a yellow flag for teammate Jeff Olschowka when he came together with another car. One of the favorites, Olschowka was done for the night. As the race approached lap 5 McDaniel closed rapidly and eclipsed Cavasos with a turn 2 run that sent McDaniel’s #73 into the lead as the pair approached turn 3. While all this action was going on at the front at the front, Shelby was up on the wheel and passing cars. The 2006 champ was relentless in his pursuit of the leaders.

Yuba City’s Jerry Bartlett slipped into 2nd and gave chase to McDaniel and began to close as the race neared ½ way. A series of wildly entertaining passes by Shelby put him on Bartlett’s bumper in 3rd. Cavasos and 5th running Ray Benkowski were in a fine duel when they both slipped sideways in turn one creating a mad scramble behind them. Heather Bartlett missed the melee and advanced. Cavasos and Benkowski recovered and motored on. During that jumble in turn 1 Shelby slipped by Jerry Bartlett on the other end of the raceway and set his sights in McDaniel. When Shelby got to McDaniel they raced side by side for a circuit or two and just as quickly as he got here, Shelby began to motor away after a clean, daring pass. He flew under starter Robin Davies checkers with a commanding lead. Heather Bartlett had a great last few laps and found 3rd in the end ahead of dad Jerry who led Cavasos across the stripe.

Robert Luster was in victory lane before this observer knew there was a problem with the original results in the KKCY Mini Stock feature. 2006 Champion Joel Giusti had pretty much dominated at the front of the wild 20 lapper once Marysville’s Shaun Merritt was eliminated in a bizarre accident of off turn 4. But, the all-watching eye of promoter Paul Hawes’ technical team found Giusti’s car out of compliance with the rules and disqualified the series point leader. 3rd place finisher Jamey Ollar was also summarily disqualified and hard charging Lisa Shelby was declared the runner up.

The race itself was a crowd pleasing, chaotic event that had multi grove passing all event long. In fact, 2nd place Shelby was the show in late race action as she clawed her way to the front after a flat tire and a late race spin in turn 4.

Quick qualifier, Merritt was the class of the field and led until nearly ½ way when Guisti quickly approached Merritt. It seemed that Merritt had a mechanical issue that allowed Giusti to catch him. When Giusti caught Merritt in turn 3 Merritt tried to respond with a high side maneuver that didn’t work. Merritt began a lazy slide in turn 4 that collected 3rd running James Foster. Foster and Merritt headed for the wall and Merritt hit it with enough force to send his quick racer to the pits for good. Shelby got a flat and had to visit the pits. She had been quickest to that point along with teammate Blane Baker.

Mike Merritt had also been on the charge and quickly got to the top five. The new green had Giusti virtually run away from the rest with Foster losing ground each lap and Luster gaining ground on the leaders. Shelby was flying through traffic from the back as the race got to its final few laps. Baker was in the mix, too, and going forward. It was a grand dice as the top six cars thundered toward the end. Luster got by Foster for 2nd, and then Foster chugged to a crawl with but 2 laps to go. Shelby was 4th already and still rushing quickly toward the leaders. The field came to the final flag in a cloud of dust and to a yellow checkered as Baker headed toward the infield after Luster cranked it sideways leaving turn 4. Giusti took the checkers 1st with eventual winner Luster in tow.

Post race penalties for unsportsman-like conduct were handed out to Foster and Floyd Youngblood for altercations in the pits after the event. The no-tolerance rules for unsportsman-like conduct set both drivers down for 2 weeks and each received $50 fines.

The drama in the Wingless warriors Wingless Sprint Car Series started before the green flag ever fell. Steve Stein was sent to the rear when his potent #34 would not fire on the original call to start the engines.

Marysville’s Cort Dozier and Tim Sherman Jr. shared the front row and Dozier jumped to an easy lead. Shaun Ternora from Ewa Beach Hawaii started in row two and quickly moved up to challenge Dozier. Mark Hill was in tow riding 3rd. On lap 2 Ternora slipped past Dozier and led at the line. A couple of early race miscues cost point leader Pat Russum a few positions as Jeremy Hawes and he dueled in mid pack. Stein meanwhile was on the move. He was clicking off positions at will as he came to the front in a big hurry. A lap 5 yellow flag found Stein in 4th!
Ternora was quick however and pulled a nice lead as the new green waved. A few laps later a car having obvious mechanical and handling problems checked up in turn 2 causing Ternora to take evasive action. Dozier, Hill and Stein slipped by before Ternora could recover.

2 laps later Stein was by Hill and set his sights on Dozier. Stein was camped on Dozier’s tail, as ½ way became history. Stein then flashed by Dozier only to have the move negated by an incidental yellow flag. At the new green Stein went back to work and, in 3 turns of the ¼ mile, grabbed the lead for good.

The race itself got better in the late laps as first Hill, then a resurgent Ternora got by Dozier. Then, Ternora turned up the heat on Hill and it was a fine race for 2nd at the end. Ternora finally got by Hill for the runner up spot with Dozier hanging on to 4th. Stein ran away in the late laps showing the smooth, aggressive style that got him the championship laurels here in 2005.

“That was fun….” was Stein’s assessment of his drive from last to 1st place in the 30 lapper. Stein’s car and crew stayed on the front chute long after the race was over savoring the moment. A tip of the hat from this observer on a great drive to the front by the former champ.

The 1st EVER Extreme Bomber Figure 8 race brought down the curtain on the festivities with a slam-bang, no holds barred, slugfest that had the fans screaming for more. In the end only 3 cars were running and the rest were battered and smoking after taking relentless hits during the race. At his writing this observer has no idea who won the race, or who his fearless companion might have been. But, the event itself was an unqualified success and NOBODY left the speedway until this one was over.

Next week is the Yuba City Dairy Queen’s Dilly Bar night. All those in attendance will get free ice cream. The final drawing for the Jimmy Sills Sprint Car rides will be staged and a full program of racing is also in store.

The “Wingless Warriors” Wingless Sprint Car Series will be back for a complete program of their heart-stopping wheel-to-wheel action. The Mighty KKCY Stock Cars will be back with their slam-bang form of all out action. The Winged Pacific Sprint Cars will headline the program that will also have the SORA Sprint 100s on the card.

Pit gates always open at 3PM. Spectator Gates Open at 5PM with racing getting underway at 7PM. Contact the promoters at 1.530.743.1327 or email as indicated on the home page. PRESS RELEASE, HOOSIER RACING TIRES CIVIL WAR SERIES
FROM THE OFFICE OF JOHN PADJEN MOTORPORTS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, SUNDAY, JULY 22 , 2007

The drought is over; Forsberg posts long awaited 2007 Civil War win at Petaluma
By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA – The Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Sprint Car Series completed two days of racing at two different tracks this weekend with the ninth segment at Petaluma Speedway in Petaluma, California. The event was the first season appearance for the California series at the 3/8 mile track and took place just 24-hours after the eighth round at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.

With eight races in the series, defending champion Andy Forsberg of Auburn was beginning to think he was destined to be a bridesmaid and never the bride in the series in which he leads the point standings and had seven top five finishes to his name prior to Saturday’s event. Saturday night, Forsberg finally ended the long dry spell when won the $2000 feature event to extend his series point lead.

“We’ve rally been struggling lately,” said Forsberg, who has utilized so many spare parts that his A&A Stepping Stone #92 has recently been donning a red top wing that is more than two season’s old. “I’ve been through so many wings this year I am starting to lose count. I was starting to think this car just likes being upside down.’

Saturday, lady luck turned her ways on Forsberg. In qualifying he clocked the third fastest time of the night with a 13:340 behind top qualifier Colby Wiesz of Colfax who turned a 13:198 and second qualifier Mike Henry of Sacramento who posted a 13:265.

In the 30-lap feature event, Forsberg started on the inside of the second row behind Grass Valley’s Billy Wallace and Placerville’s Andy Gregg. Shortly after the green flag waved, Gregg muscled his way to the lead position while Forsberg chased down Wallace for second place. Once in second Forsberg began setting his sights on Gregg as he entered lapped traffic, traffic that ultimately cost him a top position.

In the final laps of the race, Forsberg closed in on Gregg to take the lead. Gregg was unable to make an effort to redeem his top position when a lapped car drove into his path and sent him spinning out of contention to eventually finish 12th.

Once in front, Forsberg maintained his lead over Brett Rollag of Rohnert Park. Rollag started the 30-lap feature event in seventh place. The second place finish was a welcome sight for the former series’ Rookie of the Year. Friday night his Rick Williams’ owned #6r suffered heavy damage following a collision and a flip with a lapped car while running in second place.

Forsberg and Rollag were followed across the finish line by track regular Bradley Terrell. Wiesz finished in fourth followed by Friday night winner Mark Hall who started in the 13th position.

“I have to thank everyone for there support and for standing behind me these last couple of months, its been tough,” said Forsberg. “Andy was having a good run tonight, he’s been really fast lately and it’s too bad he got caught up in the traffic because we were having a good race. Maybe things will start to turn around for us now.”

In preliminary competition on Saturday night, the B-feature was claimed by Terrell who was followed across the line by Rollag, Henry and Mason Moore of Princeton. Ricky Wondergem of Napa finished fifth followed by Alissa Geving of Penngrove. JimVanlare of Santa Rosa suffered a roll over during this event that sent him to the hospital. It was reported Sunday morning the VanLare had been released without serious injury.

The C-feature was won by Pat Harvey of Grass Valley who was trailed across the line by Placerville’s Jimmy Trulli, Bill Bates, Kirk Simpson and James Sweeney. Heat races were won by Chico’s Brad Bumgarner, Hall, Scott Merrell and Mike Benson.

The Civil War Series will return to action on Saturday, August 4 at Placerville Speedway for the tenth round of competition. For additional information on the latest Civil War events and full results log on to www.johnpadjenmotorsports.com.

Dustin Smith at Waynesfield
By Blake Lirette

With the pits full and the sun shining bright, three classes fired off at Waynesfield Motorsports Park this Saturday and by 10:30 that evening everyone was on their way home to sleep off a great night of racing.

Up first for the evening were our Non-Wing Sprints and taking the prelim victories were Joss Moffett, Zac Osborn, Luke Hall, and Dustin Smith. With the feature lined up showing Dustin Smith and last week’s winner Matt Westfall on the front row the excitement had built into a frenzy. Shooting out into an early lead Dustin Smith had the 54 of Matt Westfall just behind looking for the leader to make a mistake. Five laps in the feature Johnny Heydenreich tested the front stretch wall for the first time checking to see how sturdy it was. Nine laps in Matt Westfall was right behind the 77S of Dustin Smith when Brent Smith spun in turn two slowing the action down for just a moment. Behind the top-two were Zac Osborn, Mike Miller, and Joss Moffett. Right at the drop of the green flag Zac Osborn’s motor stumbled dropping him to seventh in the running order moving everyone else further up towards the front. The second half of the race though went much like the first as Dustin Smith pulled away from the rest of the field negotiating traffic better than anyone else. In the end it was Dustin Smith, Matt Westfall, Mike Miller, Corey Smith, and Joss Moffett rounding out the top-five.

“My daughter Madison was here tonight and after last week she wouldn’t talk to me the whole way home after when I didn’t win so I really wanted to make her happy.” “This is also the first time she has got to see me win so it makes it even more special.” The track was a little rough tonight in the heats but they had it just right come feature time.” “I need to thank Shearer Printing for the hero cards they printed this week and Smith Racing for all of the support I get from my Mom and Dad.”

Press Release

Santa Maria, CA - July 21, 2007...Late Model Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, Fox 11 First at Ten East vs. West Super Street Stocks and Factory Stocks brought plenty of cars and plenty of action to Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night.

*Buena Park's Billy Griffin swept the competition in the Late Model Stock division, setting fast time of 15.152 seconds, winning an 8-lap heat race and the 25-lap main event, to hold on to the championship points lead. Second place Jerry Stewart, of Bakersfield, finished second to Griffin in the feature, with Bakersfield's Brad Pounds third, Lompoc's Dana Beattie fourth and Santa Barbara's Brian Wirtz fifth. Pounds won the other heat race.

*Pounds did double duty on the night, driving to his fourth IMCA Modified victory in four visits to Santa Maria's 1/3-mile oval in 2007. Pounds outdueled Santa Maria's Danny Lauer for the win in the 25-lap "A" main, taking the lead for good on lap 11 and leading the final 15 circuits. Jacob Jones, of Santa Maria; Kenny Kirkpatrick, of Nipomo; and, Clay Daly, of Watsonville, completed the top-five in a 22-car field. Pounds, Jones, David Addamo, of Santa Maria, and Rich Denman, of Coalinga, all captured 8-lap heat races. The 10-lap "B" main event was won by Ron Wiley of Santa Maria.

*The East vs. West Super Street Shootout brought eighteen cars to their 30-lap main event. Bakersfield's Lee Jensen led the early laps before being overtaken by Santa Maria's Tom Breshears who led nine circuits before being passed by Tom Grzincic of Atascadero. A lap later Breshears re-passed Grzincic, only to be passed by Grzincic again on the next circuit. That was on lap nineteen and it appeared that Grzincic would run the high grove to victory. Then, with two laps to go, the high grove went away and Bakersfield's Lonnie Welch, running the low line, was able to get by Grzincic for his second straight Shootout victory at SMS. Grzincic placed second, Kyle Heckman, of Nipomo, third; Tim Randolph, of Santa Maria, fourth; and, Eric Cimental, of Bakersfield, fifth. Randolph, Cimental, and Billy Simkins, of Bakersfield, took wins in the 8-lap heat races and Brady Bell, of Bakersfield, set fast time of 16.207 seconds.

*The Factory Stocks had 24-cars in their 20-lap feature event. Santa Maria's Dave Thompson started mid-pack and drove to his fourth victory of the season, upping his place in the point standings from sixth to fourth. Kirk Morgan, of Santa Maria, and Tom Renner, of Nipomo, were second and third, followed by Terra Bella's Ray Pezzi and Santa Maria's Tim Bennett. Thompson, Pezzi and Doyle Graham, Jr., of Grover Beach, won the 8-lap heat races.

*Next Saturday night SMS Bandit Sprint Cars and Ventura Racing Association Sprint Cars clash in the first of two local Grand Slam events for non-winged 360 sprinters. IMCA Modifieds and Mini Stocks are also scheduled for the event sponsored by CCIS Information Solutions. Ticket prices will be $18.00 for adults, $14.00 for seniors (65+), $3.00 for children 6 to 12, 5 and under free. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on Hutton Road.
