Vaught Holds off Jackson to Claim NCRA/MARS/MLRA Shootout Opener!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - McCool Junction, Nebraska - August 9, 2013 - Junction Motor SpeedwayWill Vaught of Crane, Missouri took advantage of race long leader Travis Dickes' misfortune to claim the opening night of the tenth annual "King of the Hill Late Model Shootout" Friday night at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Juncftion, Nebraska featuring the National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas pressented by Precise Racing Products. This event was a sanctioned event with the Lucas Oil MLRA and the MARS DIRTcar series.
Dickes and Vaught started on the front row for the twenty-five lap feature with Dickes taking the lead as the green flag fell. He would quickly open up a ten car length advantage over fourth starting Tony Jackson, Jr. and Vaught.
Dickes kept out front and began to approach lapped traffic on lap eight. Working the back markers with eaase, Dickes began receiving pressure from Jackson, Jr. as his lead would dwindel to two car lengths. Jackson would pull even with the leader before a caution would bunch things up on lap sixteen when Jimmy Segraves came to a stop at the top of the backstretch.
The double file restart behind Dickes saw Jackson and Vaught battle for the runner up position, which Vaught was able to take control of on the restart and set his sights on the leader. However, the complextion of the race would change as Dickes night would come to an end on lap seventeen when his motor expired down the backstretch. Vaught would inherit the lead but Jackson, who has been on a hot streak with both MLRA and MARS series, began to pressure the leader the final nine laps.
Jackson would make several attempts to take over the top spot but Vaught was just too strong in the middle of the three-eighths mile oval and would go on to take the victory by three car lengths over Jackson.
Vaught fought a tight race car and carburetor issues, but overall was happy to earn the win. “It was good,” stated Vaught. We’ll take a win anyway we can do it. Tony (Jackson) had a really good car. It was unfortunate for Travis (Dickes) to blow a motor there. He was probably gonna win this deal. Tomorrow night hopefully we can beat them fair and square. We’ve got a little tweaking to do to this thing. If it slows down, we’re gonna be really good.”
Eighth starting Kyle Berck came through the field late to come home third while seventh starting Jesse Stovall used the cushion at the top of the track to come home fourth. Terry Phillips started tenth and would work himeslf up to a fifth place finish.
Tomorrow night the "King of the Hill Late Model Shootout" championship night will see the grandstand opens at 5:00 PM with a special driver meet and greet. Make plans to be at the track early and check out your favorite drivers race car and get an autograph or two prior to the show.
