CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINTS AT SANTA MARIA SATURDAY!
(Placentia, CA, August 6, 2013) After a more than five-week layoff, the California Lightning Sprint Cars Series will finally be back in action this Saturday night, August 10th, at Santa Maria Speedway. Joining the CLS will be the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, Hobby Stocks, Dwarf Cars and Outlaw Carts. Spectator gates will open at 4:00 PM with racing at 6:00.
Saturday’s show will be the only appearance of the year for the CLS on the 1/3 of a mile clay oval. One year ago this weekend, Northern California star Doug Nunes won the last CLS main event at Santa Maria.
Heading into Saturday’s race, third year CLS racer Steve Limon of Corona holds a narrow 18-point lead over Placentia’s Dan Hillberg in the fight for the 2013 championship. Lakewood’s Tom Downing is third in points with Lomita’s Bobby Michnowicz, who leads the series with four wins, fourth. The tightest battle in the standings is from fifth back to seventh. Second year CLS competitor Damon Arnett of San Diego is fifth. Anaheim Hills veteran Guy Maresch is two markers behind Arnett in sixth. Murrieta’s Zach Zauss is seventh only 10-points behind Arnett and eight in back of Maresch.
Besides Michnowicz, the only driver with more than one win this season is newlywed Limon and he has two. Hillberg, Nunes, Michnowicz teenage son Kevin and 2010 CLS champion Jarret Kramer of Spring Valley have one win each.
The stars and drivers of the CLS will have little time to rest after Saturday’s race as they will be competing at the California Racer’s Hall of Fame Night at Perris Auto Speedway on August 17th. September sees the series, which is contesting its 20th season, at Bakersfield (the 14th) and Perris (the 28th). One race is on the calendar in October on the 19th at the Ventura Raceway. The CLS will close the 2013 campaign at Perris on November 1st and 2nd at the 18th Annual Budweiser Oval National presented by All Coast Construction.
For 2013, cars in the CLS will be carrying transponders and they will qualify at all events. The driver with the most fast qualifying times at the end of the season will win the “Cold Fire West Qualifying Championship” and will pocket an extra $500.00. Another new sponsor to the series this season is Extreme Muffler. They will sponsor the “Extreme Muffler Heat Race Championship” and the driver with the most heat race wins will collect a $500.00 check.
