I know Sammy is going to have a new scheme, and VDB Designs is doing one for TMac. Anybody heard of any other teams having special schemes for Nationals?

The most "unusual" paint job I think I have ever seen was what Brad Furr took to The Nationals in either 03 or 04.  Entire car was a computer chip.

Not to interrupt, but that was an awesome, awesome design.

If things fall together Logan Schuchart should have a car that resembles Scruffy's championship car in 1990. That was as of last week.

IBBOATN has a picture of Sammy's paint scheme on the front page of his site: ibracn.com.

Thanks 16...in all my years around "this stuff" that was without a doubt the most unusual paint job I have ever seen.

I think it's kind of a shame that more guys don't run special stuff for the Nationals. You would think that picking up an additional sponsor for a one-event deal and if possible, coming up with the T-shirts, would make it a worthwhile endeavour. I know I put a higher value on special scheme shirts than normal ones. It just adds another element to why Knoxville is the most special event in all of sprint car racing. Would love to see more guys do it. It doesn't have to be anything as in-depth as Furr's. Hannagan ran his normal design with inverted colors that year and it looked awesome. Jason Meyers was running the Eagle Raceway 20 and ran a yellow to orange gradiant as opposed to the normal black. It's just another thing to add to what Knoxville is.

Just looking at it from a sponsors perspective (no I'm not one just how I would if I did).. Besides maybe reversing colors Id want my primary car on the track at the shows which will end up on TV. Once they get too flashy doesnt it take away a little from the sponsorship, and now its the cool painted car, instead of the BIG GAME TREESTANDS car? Most are gonna think of Sammys car as the "Blue" car instead of the Series of stands its promoting...

I mean, regardless of the paint scheme the sponsors could stay the same. There's plenty of creative ways around this. Instead of promoting a company, you could promote a single brand or product (NASCAR teams do this all the time). Perfect example would be the 2009 Nationals, when Schatz ran the orange STP car. Not only did his parent company sponsor (Armored AutoGroup) shift to another brand under their umbrella (from ArmorAll to STP), but they also got to highlight Andretti's 69' Indy 500 win. There's probably several other examples of this, but there's a way to do it and do it correctly. Alternatively, you can keep the same sponsors and just alter the paintscheme. An inversion as previously mentioned, maybe something like a grayscale car with the same design but colored logos - really make the sponsor pop. Kinser and Schatz did something in the same mindset a few years ago with the goldleaf cars for the 50th. I understand all teams won't have the backing to do this - either from a sponsor or a budget standpoint, but I would think that most 4 1/2 to 5 star teams would be profitable off the merchandising alone. JMO.

And this talk has led me back to the original post, looks like Schatz will have something that could be different. A press release on his website states that he'll be running a "STP Gas Booster-schemed No. 15" car in the Nationals. Another example of diversifying the brand through one sponsorship deal.

Furr's car certainly did a good job of promoting his sponsor...SANMINA.  I just hope nobody bought their stock because of the car!Wink
