BUD KAEDING WINS USAC PORTION OF HOWARD KAEDING CLASSIC
WATSONVILLE, CALIFORNIA (July 13,
2013) - Bud Kaeding led the final nine laps to claim the $2,000 USAC
Western Classic Sprint Car opener for the 2013 Howard Kaeding Classic,
Friday night at John Prentice's Ocean Speedway Watsonville. The
double-header USAC night also saw USAC Western Midget points leader
Ronnie Gardner claim victory.
The third Howard
Kaeding Classic continues Saturday night with the Golden State King of
the West winged 410 sprint cars, but Friday's show was all about
traditional non-wing racing before a strong crowd at the Santa Cruz
County Fairgrounds quarter-mile bullring.
Fresno's Dominic
Scelzi led the opening 21 laps before Kaeding made a power move into
turn one on a restart to take the point and never look back. Scelzi
made several attempts to close down on Kaeding but was unable to do so.
"It feels really
good to win the race dedicated to my grandfather," Bud Kaeding said.
"This kid here (Dominic Scelzi) who did a helluva job in his first
non-wing sprint car race. Again this one is for Jason Leffler and we'll
be racing for him the rest of the year."
Scelzi started
outside of DJ Johnson at the start of the feature but led lap one.
Scelzi paced the leaders into lapped traffic before the caution came
out on lap 12 for Terre Rothweiler loosing his right rear tire directly
in front of Scelzi.
Bud Kaeding, who
started sixth, was fourth at that point and used the restart to throw a
slidejob on his father Brent in turn four. The move sent Brent Kaeding
back to the sixth spot as both DJ Netto of Hanford and defending
series champion Tony Hunt scooted by.
Four laps later, Bud
Kaeding made a similar move to slide Johnson and Netto continued to
follow him forward through the pack. Scelzi fended off Kaeding on a
lap 19 restart before the caution came out on lap 21 for Johnson
stalling with mechanical problems.
The ensuing restart
opened the door for Kaeding, as he dove into turn one to steal the lead
in a crowd-pleasing manuever. Scelzi closed within two car lengths
several times, but could not get the lead back as Kaeding stormed to
victory over Scelzi, Netto, Hunt, and Brent Kaeding.
"Yeah I definitely
figured out what I was doing wrong when Bud got around me and I was
able to reel him in," Scelzi said. "This was kind of a last minute
thing but I really wanted to win this thing. Getting tired of
finishing second. I got some homework to do to run a little better.
Been running our car out of the Kaeding stable and it's definitely a
Kaeding 1-2 and they make me feel like family!"
20 USAC Western
Midgets hit the track for just their second ever appearance at the
speedway. Atascadero's Randi Pankratz led the first nine laps before
loosing the spot to points leader Ronnie Gardner of Norco.
2012 Ocean Sprints
champ Shane Golobic and Stockton's Johnathon Henry also passed
Pankratz. Pankratz tried to fend off heat race winner Trey Marcham but
the two collided on the front stretch, sending Marcham hard into the
turn one tires.
Golobic used that
caution to take second from Henry before he bicycled hard in turn two
to spin to a stop to draw a caution. Gardner paced Henry and Anaheim's
Jake Swanson, who set a new track record earlier in the night, to the
finish with Orland's Taylor Simas fourth and Golobic managing to get
back to fifth at the stripe.
