USAC KICKS OFF THIRD KAEDING CLASSIC FRIDAY AT OCEAN SPEEDWAY
WATSONVILLE, CALIFORNIA (July 11,
2013) - The huge third annual Howard Kaeding Classic hits John
Prentice's Ocean Speedway Watsonville this weekend, led off by the USAC
Western Classic Sprint Cars and USAC Western Midgets in a traditional
non-wing double header on Friday night. Saturday night will see the
Golden State King of the West in action to wrap up one of the most
highly anticipated weekends of the year at the Santa Cruz County
Fairgrounds oval.
While the USAC
Sprint Cars make four appearances at Ocean Speedway this year, this is
the lone appearance for the busy USAC Western Midget trail. Norco's
Ronnie Gardner has stormed to four feature wins to lead the overall
standings ahead of Anaheim's Jake Swanson with one feature win.
Fresno's David
Prickett is the most recent series winner, grabbing the win at Plaza
Park Raceway in Visalia at the end of June to run third in the points.
Other championship contenders this year have included Tehachapi's
Shannon "Lightning" McQueen, Frankie Guerrini, and Cody Swanson.
2012 Ocean Sprints
champion Shane Golobic of Fremont will join the fray after winning the
series' event at Placerville Speedway on June 1st.
Two-time Ocean
Speedway Wingless champion Ryan Bernal of Hollister has a large 42 point
advantage in the USAC Western Classic Sprint Car standings but is
likely to be absent as he competes in the 2013 Indiana Sprint Week.
Bernal's absence will swing the gates wide open for other championship
contenders such as Stockton rookie DJ Johnson and 11-time and defending
series champion Tony Hunt.
Fair Oaks' Shauna
Hogg and April Watsonville runner-up Colton Slack of Brentwood are also
in the championship mix. Kingsburg's Tanner Swanson finished third in
the April event and 2011 USAC Western Classic champion Geoff Ensign of
Sebastopol won the most recent event at Stockton 99 Dirt Track in
June.
Galt's Matt Streeter
was second at Stockton to go along with a fourth at Watsonville earlier
this year and could be a threat as well.
Friday's races for
the Ocean Sprints also includes Bay Area Dwarf Cars and IMCA Sport
Mods. Adult tickets are $20 with seniors 65+ $19 and kids ages 6-12
are $15. Grandstand gates open at 4:30 p.m. and qualifying will get
underway near 6 p.m.
