AFTER 5-WEEK BREAK LIGHTNING SPRINTS BACK IN ACTION SATURDAY AT ORANGE SHOW!
(Placentia, CA, June 24, 2013) After a five-week break in the middle of the season, the California Lightning Sprint Car Series returns to action this Saturday night, June 29th, at the Macro Air Orange Show Stadium on the Orange Show Fairgrounds in San Bernardino.
Joining the CLS on the show will be the URA Sprint Cars and the URA Limited Midgets. Spectator gates will open at 4:30 PM and the first race is slated to take the green flag at 5:30.
Saturday's race signal's the resumption of the tight battle for the 2013 CLS championship. Third year racer Stephen Limon of Corona led the title chase from the start of the season until the May 11th race at Bakersfield when Placentia veteran Dan Hillberg shot ahead and took a 12-point lead. Limon, a United States Army veteran, chopped that lead down to 3-points at the last race on Memorial Day weekend at Perris Auto Speedway.
Through the first eight races of the campaign, consistency has powered Hillberg and Limon to their lofty positions in the standings. Hillberg has six top five finishes. They include a win at Perris, two seconds, a third and two fourth place outings. Limon has seven top five finishes with a win at Ventura, two seconds, a third, two fourths and a fifth.
Like the battle for the top spot in the standings, there is war waging from third to sixth. The "World Famous" Tom Downing of Lakewood is third in the standings. While he is 207-points behind leader Hillberg, he is just 2-points ahead of Guy Maresch of Anaheim Hills. Lomita's Bobby Michnowicz, who has missed a couple of races, sits fifth and is only 12-points behind Maresch and recent high school graduate Alex Bissett of Hemet is 18-markers behind Michnowicz.
Bobby Michnowicz is the only driver in the series with more than one win in 2013. The veteran racer has three victories thus far including the first race at the Orange Show on
April 27th. His other two victories both came at the Bakersfield Speedway. Other winners in 2013 are Michnowicz' teenage son Kevin (Perris Auto Speedway), Hillberg (Perris Auto Speedway), Limon (Ventura) and Northern California's Doug Nunes (Bakersfield Speedway).
After Saturday's race, the CLS will have little time to prepare for their next action, which will come in front of their biggest crowd of the year in an open wheel quadruple header at Perris Auto Speedway on Thursday, July 4th.
For 2013, cars in the CLS will be carrying transponders and they will qualify at all events. The
driver with the most fast qualifying times at the end of the season will win the "Cold Fire West Qualifying Championship" and will pocket an extra $500.00. Another new sponsor to the
series this season is Extreme Muffler. They will sponsor the "Extreme Muffler Heat Race Championship" and the driver with the most heat race wins will collect a $500.00 check.
