RODRIGUEZ LEADS WESTERN MIDGETS TO 4 MIDWEST RACES;
HANSEN TOPS SANTA MARIA MIDGET MAIN
The USAC Western Midget Series is preparing for its annual trek to the Midwest to compete in races July 24-25 at McCool Junction, Neb. and July 27-28 at Belleville, Kans.
Johnny Rodriguez of Elk Grove, Calif. continues to lead the standings, 59 points ahead of Scott Pierovich, going into the four races in the nation’s heartland.
Rodriguez finished fourth in Saturday night’s 30-lap race at Santa Maria (Calif.) Speedway, won by Garrett Hansen. Hansen, of Manhattan Beach, Calif., caught early leader Robby Flock on lap 21 and led the rest of the way in his Hansen Welding Beast/Fontana to beat Flock, Josh Lakatos, Rodriguez and Chris Rahe.
Flock led the first 20 laps but was unable to record his 53rd career victory. His next opportunity will come in the McCool Junction and Belleville events. Flock won the 1996 “Belleville Midget Nationals.
