Smith Routes NCRA Sport Mod Foes in Amarillo!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Amarillo, Texas – June 1, 2013 - Tour regular Brandon Smith brought one home for the hometown crowd as he led all but the first lap to win the Bob Howard PDC and Mopar National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Precise Racing Products southern sport modified division made their annual appearance at Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas on Saturday night to wrap up two straight nights of racing action in two states.

Cole Brown and Koty Kowalewski started on the front row for the thirty lap feature with Brown taking the lead as the green flag fell. Fourth starting Smith got by Kowalewski for the runner up position while Pat McNabb and Bobby Carter also gave chase after the first lap was complete.

The races first and only caution flag of the event fell on lap two when Paul Vines, Clay Bichsel, Kelly Cross, Tony Walton and series rookie contender Craig Ridgway all tangled at the bottom of turn four. While under caution, leader Brown relinquished his lead as he went pit side after dropping a drive shaft.

This would give Smith the lead on the final restart and once racing action resumed he kept his family owned #69 Hydraulics Plus/Karts Extreme sponsored Western Flyer Sport Mod chassis powered by Carroll's Racing Engines car out front and would open as much as a ten car length lead during the event.

Behind him the battle for second through fifth was persistent between Carter, sixth starting Ty North, McNabb and seventh starting Travis Johnson with Johnson taking over the fourth position from McNabb on lap twelve.

The leader's first encounter with lapped traffic occurred on lap sixteen and while Carter closed the gap to five car lengths but that would be as close as he would get. Smith had built open to a half stretch advantage with six laps to go and had a bit of a hard time disposing of a couple of cars, but he would steer clear with two laps to go and go on to take the half straightaway victory over Carter.

North would come home third while Johnson brought home his #86j Carroll's Racing Engine powered Western Flyer sport mod home fourth with McNabb rounding out the top five.

51 sport mods, the largest count in the tour's five year history took part in ten lap heat races with Johnson, Brown, Smith, Kowalewski and McNabb claiming victories. Cleo Adams and Kenny Morris claimed the two, ten lap "B" features.

The next event for the NCRA southern sport modified division is scheduled to take place on Saturday night, June 15th at Mid-America Speedway in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma.
