The funny thing about this post is this is the 1st year since the split that the Outlaws have 85+ races scheduled, a title sponsor and more than 12 teams following them in the same year.

I'd say the series is ticking up slightly, 410 car counts nationally is another story.

Personally, I was happy to see that even five cars joined the traveling band of merry sprint car teams!

El Paso is not a hot bed for sprint cars...and Texas is not known for 410 racing.

I think the local promoter summed it up when he said he was very pleased with how the evening went. He even raced himself! How many promoters do that?

Yes, it is expensive to attend a WoO event but there are many people who only get one shot a year so they feel it is worth the extra bucks.

Not every WoO event is a success from the view point of some fans. I don't like the single file racing which does happen too frequently but it is just how things go.

Based on how the economy has been the past four years I would think they have a good field of cars for the travelers.

Personally, I try to go to as many Outlaw shows as I can each year. I know some of the races can be single file with 1 leader the whole race but that has a little bit to do with track conditions. The price that most tracks charge for an outlaws race is fair to me, $25-$30. When you factor going to any other event NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, etc the price really is reasonable for something that you cannot see on TV on a regular basis. These may not compare to what the WoO are but, also factor in movie tix, and other forms of racing.

I know a few people on here keep on hoping for the Outlaws demise based on certain bias but, I really think we need them to be successful in order for 410 racing to be successful.

Nick, out here in Cali I don't know any track under $40.00 for a WoO event. Now many of the fair grounds are charging to park. Frown

Vegas (40cars), Tucson (30cars), Tulare (31cars), Stockton (40cars), Chico (41cars), Merced (31cars), Antioch (34cars), Kings (27cars). I think they are doing fine as of now. Its all about location, location, location. Texas is 360 country along with most of the area around it. Here in the Ohio area, they will probably get around 35-40cars each night as well since our region is 410. Their are just certain tracks that the outlaws will go to that will not generate a good car count and Perris is probably one of those areas. From what I hear it is mostly wingless around that area. Remember that the outlaws basically only have about 10-11 full time drivers most seasons, the rest of the fields are made of from local drivers going after the bigger purse that the is provided (in relation to what they normally race for weekly) and drivers like Keading, Haudenschild, Shaffer, Stewart, who run partial schedules when they come to that region. If none of the local drivers want to take a chance with dropping a 410 in their car and putting a wing on it, or just the cost of running in general, then you will get a low car count.

Actually Nick, Texas is not 360 country. It may have been a few years ago, but now it's 305 Racesaver country with regard to weekly racing. Of course the ASCS is in the state with regional shows and the occasional national shows, but weekly racing is 305 in the D/FW area. Not sure if the same is true in Houston or not. I wouldn't expect a high car count for a 410 show anywhere in Texas, even if they came back to Devils Bowl or TMS. And of course I certainly didn't expect one in El Paso.

word of the woo demise has been circulating for over 30 years.

I wouldn't call it a demise in most of the country but some of the areas they visit used to host 410 racing and no longer do resulting in short WoO fields when they race in those areas. I think what people are saying, and I would have to agree, is that paying top dollar to see short fields could change people's minds about attending their shows in the coming years. I'm not talking about the folks who hang out on boards like this but a large part of an Outlaw crowd is made up up casual fans who only come out when they're in town. I come from an area where we don't have any 410 Sprint Carracing within five hours but if they put on a Late Model or Modified special a bunch would show up.

Posting is slow for some reason and I didn't know if that last one went through. To wrap up what I was saying I think there could be a tipping point where the racing wouldn't be much fun to watch if there's only 15, 18 cars. I don't know what that is but I believe it might be something they'll want to take a serious look at. 410 racing isn't ever going to rebound around the Twin Cities. We have Knoxville six hours south, Grand Forks about the same distance northwest and Husets five hours to the southwest. Racers in the points hunt at their home track aren't going to pull five or six hours to run with the Outlaws. We've got the IRA with most of their guys based six hours to the east but again, they're not going to skip an IRA points race to run with the Outlaws. A couple guys show up with 360's but basically they're out there so they can say they ran against the WoO.

My personal approach is that I won't chase them, if they're nearby and I'm setup to take photos or work on a story I'll go see them. I think of it more as an opportunity to visit with friends and hopefully get a few nice shots. The racing is pretty good so I enjoy watching them but I don't go out of my way to see them anymore. That's just me though, I guess a person doesn't get that excited about it after watching these cars going in circles since 1960. wink

People are quick to bash 410's and the WoO, but remember when the ASCS cut its purse. Didn't the national shows used to pay 6k to win, and now they are 4k. Isn't that one of the reasons Paul Silva cited for the 57 basically closing shop. If people like watching 360's then fine, go enjoy. Why the constant need to bash 410's?

Now $40+ parking would be ridiculous. Here in Ohio, I believe the highest price would be Eldora for the Kings Royal at $36 +parking but that's just because its a specialty race. All other regular shows are about $27-$32 with no cost for parking. Both Fremont and Attica are on fairgrounds and they don't charge for parking. Sorry to hear about that, hope it goes down soon. If your ever get over to Ohio for the races hit me up and I'll show you around.

21 cars or 12 cars, I'd still be there as would most. The complainers are at it once again this year. So be it. Probably a big ASCS or 360 promoter: "by 2006 there won't be any 410 racing in this country". Where did that guy go. Bet he changed his handle more than once since 2006.

Thanks Nick, I appreciate that.

It has been YEARS since I was last at Eldora. I've been to many of the tracks from Eldora to Washington. I don't travel like I used to and I miss being around racing.

Hope you enjoy your racing season wherever it might be.

Hopefully in the future we will see the 410's make a comeback in the OK, TX, AR area. I still say the Devilsbowl would be packed for a WoO show,I know I would make the looong haul for it. Be it 360's or 305's, nothing puts fans in the stands more than the 410's!
